Just some questions/observations maybe someone will be able to help with.

1) How many men does a single infantry unit represent? I would like some guidepost so I can guestimate how many guys are in my armies.

2) When using the optional corps commander rule, does it matter if the divisions are actually built up and asigned to corps, or will simply lumping leaders and units into the corps have the same result. (Basically the later would save time, especially after battle casualties. Do I really need to dissasemble the corps after every battle to rebuild the individual divisions, or can I simply pour new reinforments into the corps and get the same effect.)

3) I don't see how to get the states with low, yet nonzero personnel points to actually produce units. When I try to produce units (even reconstituted ones) the population goes negative and the nothing gets produced. In GGWaW, men would accumulate in countries like Romania and would produce units when enough had accumulated -- generally one every other turn. That does not seem to be the case here. Are states like Maryland only capable of producing supplies? (If so, then why are the buttons for selecting units not grayed out?)

4) I have seen several battles (as the Union) with VERY lopsided casualties in favor of the Confederacy. I remember one major battle with Grant in command that suffered almost 20,000, with about 4,000 confederate casualties after "7 engagements". I think it would be a reasonable and a nice addition if the game allowed a human player to choose to withdrawl between "engagements". When one battle is going so badly, very few commanders would continue to press on. Even Burnside called it quits before personally leading his army into one last charge at Fredricksburg.

5) I still don't have a good handle on how many command points should be left available to a leader. If a 1-star has, say 4-points, is it a bad idea to assign 4 units to his command? Or is it okay? What if the 1-star is assigned as a subordinate unit in a corps? Does it matter then? Or does it matter only that the corps commander has a few extra command points?

'Nuff for now. All knowledge tid-bits much appreciated!

1) 2000

2) Haven't used sub commander rule yet

3) Have let AI handle production so far, dunno

4) Turns are monthly so I personally don't view these battles so much as single engagements but a serious of battles over the course of the month in different areas in the region so armies aren't necessarily hit with a huge disparity of casualties during a single battle.  Also some generals are better at retreating than others...though I forgot the stat that governs this even though I just read it in the manual last night.

5) Again I haven't used sub commander rules yet, but I don't see much reason not to load up on units to the max CP nor save CPs other than if you want to train unattached units.

Ted:

Thanks for your insights. Grant finally broke through the "Paducah Pocket" in Oct '62. I think my lesson learned is that artillery is good, and more artillery is better. I think I was taking a lot of hits from Confederate artillery at the beginning of the enagements, and was falling behind in casualties like 8000 to 0 before the fighting began. Time to restart and build a whole lot of guns and see if it makes a difference.

Thx,

P

You should aim for a 2:1 ratio in Inf:Art. So an attacking force of 60 INF + 30 Arty is a good army to work with.

5) Fill up your leader with units. There is little or no reason not to. In generel you should use leaders with the most command points and have them control as many units as possible.
