I'm playing Operation Cartwheel against the AI . It's July 23, '43 and my land based search planes haven't seen the IJN Carriers for about 30 days. I have all my carriers almost off the map to the east of Bougainville. I've made a few runs to clean up cripples can I expect a sortie by any Japanese carriers by 8.14.43?

My first time playing this scenario. Thanks

Hmmm... hard to tell.  The Japanese seem to be reluctant to challenge US carrier power in mid '43, but with my experience they seem to love to commit mass hara-kiri by impaling themselves on LBA, particularly around Lunga.  Historically they didn't come out to play pretty much all of '43 due to dominance of LBA in the region and lack of carrier pilots, who were too busy trying to defend Rabaul and Truk.  But the AI can get flaky, you'll never know.  Unless you're fortunate enough to have Hellcat-equipped carriers at this stage in the game, try not to provoke carrier battles outside of friendly LBA fighter cover.  Japanese carrier pilots have been known to get lucky with a well-coordinated strike of Vals and Kates, especially if they have any experienced pilots left.

Normally at this stage of the game my goals are to totally interdict any Japanese shipping, and step up the pressure on Rabaul with frequent airfield attacks from rotating squadrons of bombers and fighter sweeps to keep the Zeroes losses up and their morale down.  If Japanese are using Shortland as a port (AI usually does) I raid it, bomb the port and airfield, chase away any shipping, and then mine the crap out of it so it can't be used anymore.  Usually not worth invading because of sizeable land garrison.  Any IJN warships stupid enough to sortie south of Rabaul tend to suffer extreme pain, if not become new reefs.

Once the Japanese are down to running all their supply convoys with AG's you know the end is near for them in the South Pacific.

Until you get the Hellcats any carrier fight will likely be a mutual suicide pact like most of the fights in UCV seem to be.
