Will have to keep my eye on this , hopefully the USN engineers can get steam back up and damage control parties can put out fires/ control flooding on their ships.

i am so stuppid. i realy thought my 30 knt. CV-TFs will be out of his carrier range when they head to the south. therefore, i set 0% CAP to keep the morale of the pilots high.

now i hope to hold TW. if TW is lost, it will get more difficult.

Nice post. Missed a few of the pennants, been along time. LOL "Uncommon Valor"

Easiest one was "Oscar" Man overboard! Had four while OOD on Tin Cans...practiced all the time, but when real, scared the crap of me!

Sorry to hear about your misery with the flattops. But war is a weird mix of strategy, luck, mistakes, technology, men & morale and a few dozen other factors.

How about your reinforcements? Did they depend on CV support?
The IJN is very powerful at this stage... as you see.

You are absolutely correct. Look up USS Stark (FFG 31) attack in 87? And if you want to know the real truth I'll tell you. I know, as I was XO on another ship which was there at the time.l

IIRC it was kinda surprise attack with nobody detecting the missiles?! Given the date it must have been still war then (Iran-Iraq)?!

i should write this 100 times on the blackboard:

"dont expect what your enemy will do. expect what he CAN do."

things will get much much harder now but because the fight is in australia, i do not realy need carrier planes to inflict massive casualties to the IJN.

the last turn:

Yes, the Iran vs Iraq war. This was my forth deployment to the Persian Gulf. Once as weapons officer on a Knox class FF, and twice as the weapons officer on AE.

There were about 5-6 tin cans in the gulf attached to COMMIDEASTFOR who's flagship was stationed in Bahrain. Our orders were to escort merchant ships through the straight of Hormuz and protect them from either side in the war. I was XO (Executive Officer/Number One) not sure what the German Navy calls them/) on the USS Reid (FFG 30), sister ship to the Stark. She was out of Norfolk I think, and we were stationed in San Diego.

There was a line of latitude which I can't remember that was called the, "No go line." It meant that we were not to sail north of that line. Guessing it was about two thirds of the way up the Persian Gulf.

Anyway, when we arrived we were ready for a war. Since the average sea level in the Gulf is only about 60', I convinced the CO to shut down the sonar and use the men to man extra 50 cals we had installed behind sand bags up on the 03 level. BTW, as the sonar spaces were one of the coldest spaces on the ship, as XO I used my authority to buy 500 cases of beer and store it down there. Hey, got to look after the troops! Oh, we had also embarked a Stinger missile detactment.

On arrival in the Gulf the staff came out to brief us. Almost laughingly they said to stand down. This was not our war, nor was any fighting going on that threatened our ships. So, like the Stark, we fell into over confidence and let our guard down. Routine and boredom soon set in.

The Iraqis used to fly their attack A/C South East to mid-point in the Gulf, turn North East toward Iran and an oil depot island called Karg (sp), and fire at the first blimp on their radar screen. Then haul ass back to Iraq.

What happened is that the Iraqi pilot flew too far South East and crossed the "No Go" line. When he then turned North East the first target that appeared happend to be the Stark..."missiles away!"

Think it was May 17th, 1987 at about 2000 when the Stark got hit. We were about 100 NM south escorting a merchant. At flank speed we got on site in the morning. What a sad site. Although there were a couple of other ships helping, she was listing about 45 degrees and smoke pouring out of the superstructure. Starks crew had been removed because they were exhausted. Crew from the other ships were fighting the fires and flooding, but were not familiar with the ship, and although they were doing their best, they were actually sinking her with all the fire fighting water they were pouring into her.

We put two damage control parties aboard her ASAP. We kept the third onboard as everyone in the Gulf was on high alert for another attack. From who we didn't know as yet, but we weren't taking any chances. Couple of hours later the Stark was on even keel and the fires put out.
The saddest moments for me was first when I was up on the bridge a motor whale boat came along side and one of the crew yelled up and ask me if we had any body bags. And number two was the fact the our Chief Engineer, nice young kid, lost his mind after seeing the carnage. We had to transfer him back to San Diego.

The Stark's XO and everybody else in CIC saw the Iraqi Exocet missile EW rackets but didn't believe it, and therefore did nothing. She was hit forward port side right where the superstucture meets the main deck. Neither missile exploded on impact. They hit one after the other punching a hole down through the inside and wound up about mid-ships on the mess deck. The missiles broke open spilling unused rocket fuel which caught fire. The concusion warped the hatches to the forward berthing area and trapped a lot of guys. The fire kept damage control parties from rescueing them, and they either suffocated or drowned from the fire fighting water that flooded the compartment.

Hind sight is always 20-20, but if I had been in CIC I would have not taken any chances. Why would you? No harm, no foul? On that class ship you can set the Close In Weapons Systems (CIWS), Otto Malara 20MM gun, and Super Rapid Blooming Chaff to automatic with a flip of switch. The SM1 missile system takes a little longer. Then standard tactics dictate that you put the threat on either the port or starboard quarters so all weapons system come to bear. I would have to guess it would have taken about 15-20 seconds maximum.

The SM-1 missile might have gotten a hit, but doubt full...too small a radar return. The gun, at 80 RPM might have gotten a hit, but the CIWS would have blown at least one them out of the sky. And, maybe they both would have chased the chaff and not hit at all. But if they did hit it would have been aft and not in the superstructure.

Tough lessons to learn. After that we were at Condition III at all times, except when moored to the pier. In this condition there is an Tactical Action Officer (TAO) in CIC who has written command authority to fire any and all weapons at any time.

Couple of days later we pulled into Bahrain and anchored, but still at Condition III. CO and I are eating lunch with the rest of the wardroom officers, when the ships speaker screams, "Captain to CIC!" We both hauled ass up to combat and are met by the TAO who says, "I have a fire control radar sweeping us on the EW gear, and an incoming air contact on the same bearing as the EW racket, CBDR....Constant Bearing; Decreasing Range. I also have a live missile on the rail and I am ready to fire!" This kid, I and use the term "kid", because he was...maybe 22? Was cool, calm, and collected; and not nervous at all. CO looks at me with that, "You got to be ****ting me!" look. I said, "A hostile air attack inport Bahrain? Doesn't make sense?" Anybody want to guess what the bogey was before reading on?

Turns out a Bahrainian patrol boat was screwing around and lit us up with gunnery fire control system; and on the same bearing at the same time a civilian airliner was landing at the airport. Whew! I cannot tell you how close we came to disaster....!

The first port we hit after leaving the Gulf was in Thailand...and yes, I got hammered!

BTW, I came back to the Gulf for the fifth time during Desert Storm as the Surface Operations Staff Officer for......you guess it...COMMIDEASTFOR! I briefed a lot of ships coming into the Gulf, and I made a serious point of, "Do not let your guard down!"

We're both losing massive amounts of men, planes, and ships. However, that is the all or nothing cost of trying for an auto-victory.

Trying to land a second wave of IJN Marines in an all out effort to take Townsville. Re-attack took longer than expected due to loading bug.  Finally got em' loaded on a 36 ship transport TF?

Loading problem drove me up the wall! Took days to get the troops loaded? They'd start to load, and sail with nobody embarked? Then had to send em' back to try and load again. If I landed the second wave much sooner I think the game would have been better. Not that I would have won, would have been a toss up.

Biggie is a pleasure to play against....true gamer.

in our restarted game, popeye goes for the louganville area.

and although i dont like to fight his carriers so early, i had to react what resulted in another epic carrier duell with around 13 carriers and 1000 planes involved on both sides.

popeye just captured luganvilleand Efate Port Vila. i lost some aircrafts as he took the bases around luganville.

as for the CV-situation, intel expects this loses to the KB:

kaga, akagi, zuikaku, shokaku, hiryu, soryu, shoho are sunk or close to sink.

although some informations are classified, i can say, that the USN lost 1 CV and "more then one" CV is in pearl and it is unlikely, that they will make it back before the 1st january 1943.

AC loses were heavy. around 500 carrier aircrafts on the japs side and 350 on the USN side.

the end, gentlemen.

rumors from the imperial HQ say, that yamamoto was replaced as the chief of the combind fleet and got a command in a isolated, small and  wonderfull south sea island where the sun shines the whole year and the native girls are allways friendly, while hasley&co. have to stay there where they are and fight the war to the end.=)
