After a 2 and half week personal boot camp I put myelf through I finally booted up and played a MC.

After reading the documents and and looking at the pictures (all excellent stuff) I began to cross the San river.

I wont go into an AAR but I won a DV (something like 4000 to 600) But it was very close. I took 2 of the 250 point objectives within the last turn. My company took heavy losses, ( I didnt get much heavy weapon support), but It was very very fun.

The makers did an excellent job and when I can find the funds im gona buy the 3rd MC.

BTW dont give it away, but I took the 2 hour delay before I assulted the castle. My group was badly cut up and they are Soviets. Was this a smart idea?

I cant wait to fight the next battle, that castle looks like it needs to be made into a parking lot.

Fallschirmjager,

Glad to see you really got into the MCLV. I can't stop talking up
the MC's. I think they are just great.

I spent the last three days in the desert ( see my post in another thread). I just love MCNA! The documents and other materials in the MC's are amazing and I love the non linear style of the campaigns , as well as the core and other forces that are supplied to you from HQ on a battle to battle basis.

I should be getting the other 2 MC's via UPS any day know. I am sitting in my tent by the door waiting
;) .

Have fun and keep your head down! BTW, when you get to the winter months in MCLV, I can send you some winter clothing for the troops if you need 'em:D

John

I got the MC:LV a couple of months ago and couldn't play it because the Command + Control not functioning on my XP machine.

In the 1st battle I got a Moderate Victory. I really messed up the organization of the Kampfgruppe and had numerous wandering lost units. I had had only a casual knowledge of artillery and therefore it wasn't a help. I also had the problem with not clearing bunkers. I'd smoke them so they couldn't see. So I could bypass them but when the battle had moved on, the troops inside would come out and take back objective hexes near the San River. Aaaaaaagh!! Lost about 300vp :[

I've just finished the 2nd mission and in it I took the early attack. I think I was still stuck with some organization problems to figure out. A commander with more experience than I would have sorted those out sooner than I did. Re-grouping and re-weighing of forces is the skill I need to work on. Some improvements though: Artillery was a smashing success especially for blocking LOS of some bunkers and for support for some my too-weak forces that went after the castle directly. As well I noticed a Soviet unit near the San River objective hexes(A-haaa!! you little b******ds) and had a squad and a half-track held back to do a sweep. One major downer about my self-control was that I kept crashing my AFVs into buildings to get at objective hexes. I lost too many that way when the infantry should have done the job.
Those NCO "students" taught me some lessons and I got another Moderate Victory.

The 2 hour delay(which I didn't take) is a very interesting trade-off. I suspect that there's a greater depth of Soviets forces with the 2 hour delay but you probably get more stuff and it might be better organized.

I'm on my 3rd mission with interesting choices offered hehe
I took the "easier" one because it's time, I think, to get a Decisive Victory or I'll be back in Bavaria filling out reports.

I myself also just started the MCLV for the first time a few days ago (I didn't start earlier because I was waiting for 7.1 and the MCLV patches). This is the first MC I'veplayed and it's brilliant, utterly impressed and kudos to the designers who did such a good job. If anyone still has doubts over buying an MC then I can definately recommend it!!

-----------------------------------
My AAr so far....

I managed a DV on the first battle by advancing quickly and bypassing any bunkers and fortifications, I think I completed it with 2 turns to spare, casualties were extremely light...a good start. Selected artillery support at the start of this battle.

Decided to attack the castle and town immediately for the second battle, no point in waiting and giving the Soviets time to prepare, casualties on my side were minimal so I give the go ahead to attack immediately.
Managed a DV again, tried to advance quickly but had some initial difficulty to the west of the castle with fortifications so I had to re-adjust my attack and move south then up to the castle. Moved recon units south around the city and into the rear objectives, no problems there. NCO cadet school proved quite tough nut to crack and they were doing well for a few turns until I finally managed to break through. A more difficult battle than the first one, slightly higher casualties but still low.

Feeling good about myself and the speed of the german advance going into battle 3 to relieve the Brandenburgers on the bridge.
The obvious route down the road is bound to be heavily defended but there is an objective hex there so I need to send some men that way..... decide to send 80% of my forces down the main road and detach my recon platoon and a unit of PZ-IIc to take the eastern tracks and come to the bridge from the south, ultimately I think this decision saved my bacon and the arrival of these units to help the Brandenburgers meant that I held the bridge and all Victory hexes and destroyed most of the russian tanks trying to cross the bridge. My main forces took the other victory objective and held it without any difficulty. The scenario ends a couple of turns early but I still only get a moderate victory, I suspect that I did not inflict enough casualties on the soviets but I am happy with the battle overall. :)

Next battle was moving onto Rad.....chow (can't remember the name), I was told not expect much resistance!!!!! I encountered hell on earth as I ran into a large russian armoured column. Initially my recon units forged ahead and captured the middle objectives and my northern troops cleared out the town relatively easily. My armour held back slightly overlooking the cenral objectives expecting a counterattack. I was soon looking at numerous soviet tanks including KV models and T-28s (these looked exactly like T-34s and were probably just as tough...I was a bit confused by them). Anyhow my shells bounced of almost everything, I ended up picking off the smaller soviet tanks first before concentrating mass fire on the larger models. I seemed to be slowly wearing them down with several crew abandons and suspension disables but more soviet T34s attacked from the south. I had 80% of my armour in the north and concentrated on the T28s and eventually managed to kill them all, I left it up to a platoon of Pz-IIc to contest the southern objectives and they had to fall back allowing the soviets to retake the southern central objectives (my Pz-IIc did wipe out a platoon of sneaky cossacks who tried to take my rear objectives ;) ). I concentrated on minimalising my casualties and slowly wore down the soviet morale before my recon units flanked him from the north and captured one of his rear Victory hexes. At the end of the battle the russians were in full retreat and I owned all middle objectives and one of his rear objectives, managed to get a moderate victory but it was hard fought, casualties were not too bad, lost about 5 tanks and a couple of infantry squads.

Thats where I'm up to so far and loving it!!! I was a bit worried that my usual cautious style would make it difficult to obtain DVs but so far I'm more than pleased. One question I do have is that in every battle I've really concentrated on minimising losses but in the following battles I seem to get all my units back up to full strength, I presume that the mega campaigns don't require me to purchase replacements for my men and simply top my men up after each battle. Thinking about it this sort of reduces the need to worry about losses BUT I can't change my playing style and having more experienced troops is certainly going to be a bonus. :)

Keep casualties low, additional recruits will come up if squad has suffered slight casualties, but if it is wiped out totally you can have very green units. And ofcourse you get better score if casualties are low. I think that in some missions it is very important.
