How about a week straight of WiFFE?

I would like to inform this audience, many of whom are interested in WiFFE, that there are annual WiFFE conventions in Michigan, USA and Germany every year. The Michigan one is held in Lansing, and is a great time. I have attended for 6 years in a row, going on 7. Good people and fun times. This is, of course, with the board game.

link: http://wifcon.org/

The European one is in the fall. I would love to attend but family and finances have made it too difficult so far.

link: http://www.eurowif.de/eurocon/registration08.htm

regards,

I really want to attend the Euro one but its two weeks too early for me to have the possiblity. As a teacher you can only really have holidays when the kids do.

I have booked for lansing. this is my 4th year. I had too wait untill my boy was 16 before I could get away. 9 days of brutal gaming. You will play the best in the world.

Last year I was at WiFCon(World in Flames) and was playing on table 2. Table one was the "Big Board" on the wall. Mike Cobb(vietnam vet,San Diego) was Japan and Andrew Raider(MIT student) was Germany. Raider is the World champion(07).
In 1940 Raider invaded and conqured England before the end of 41. Richard Dagnell , a real life british SAS member, moved production to India then concentrated on Japan and knocked Japan(Mike Cobb) out of the 9 day tournament by the end of 42.(Tuesday) On Thursday the allies where concentrating on Germany(Raider).
The old grizziled grognard Cobb, just back from a round of golf told Rader, "You are not going to quit, You are going to suck it up because you had your fun in the first half of the game, now it is the allies turn to have fun." Profound words from a 60year old man to a student.
On my table, I was russia and was pushed to the urals by the 2000 winner, Mike Burke. Everytime I go I learn something new from these world traveling players.

I think I will actually go this year because I have not played the game in some 15 years and with the impending release of the video game, I want want to brush up on my WiF skills. It's only an hour away from me, so I don't even have to stay in a hotel. So it works out great for me. Anyone that is going to attend, let me know so that maybe we could get together and do a matrix forum game.

OK, I thought I was good until I went to WiFcon. There are those that talk the talk, and those that WALK THE WALK. A few of the WiFcon players eat WiF for breakfast. I am not one of those guys. But if you would like to play them, ask for the big board.

Why don't you? Perhaps in the winter, when the weather would be an attraction for coming as well?

I am from the deep south. I find the accomodations at Lansing to be very very nice. Center of the country for all concerned, plus players from england and germany(7hour trip) easy entrance thru Detroit. The weather is WONDERFUL(NO HUMIDITY).

Plus, across the street from the hotel
1. the state capitol
2. Omar's gentleman's club (the fireman's convention runs off the rifraf)
3. Demitri's Deli(you should have seen him when I asked for GRITS!!!)

Remember, you can host a tournament in LA but the trophy at Lansing says "World Champion".

I suggest you contact Steve Balk (first post in this thread). If he can't give you advice about how to set this up, he probably knows someone who can.

One of the proposals made last year was a sugestion that EiA also be included at this convention in the future. The organizers already have an established con that gives enough time to finish either game. The additional players might just provoke a visit from Harry Roland, the designer of both games.

I have actually talked to both Don and Bob Rutherford and they both said he is definitely not coming. That is a shame, but having never played the FE, unfortunately, as much as I'd like to have a matrix table, I can't because for all intensive purposes, I am considered a newbie because of the overhaul design form the 4th and 5th edition.
One thing I would like to suggest though, is if Steve can at all possibly make it, I think it would be an awesome thing if you could for they are going to have a deno of CWIF there are going to formally introduce the game to everyone now that we know for sure that it will have been released by this time nest year. I don't know if you have had any contact with the organizers of the con, but next year they are going to have a special room just for CWIF. Si, I would strongly recommend you be there if you can Steve. It would do nothing but increase, greatly the overall pipularity of the game by tou just being there. I hope with all my heart you can try and make arrangements to be there. I am quite certain that Don and Bob will make it very welcome visit for you should you somehow be able to attend. And maybe, just maybe that would possibly some incentive for Harry Roland to show up. I think it could be a win win situation for all involved. I know it is short notice, but I would love to make it happen. It would be the best thing WiF players could ever dream of.

Right now I have limited my vision to just finishing MWIF. After I do that, I'll worry about publicity tours.

True but you don't have to be an expert to get great fun - just expect to be at the receiving end of the whip in that case

I am a steady attendant at the European WIF con and until I attended my first Con some 10 years ago I thought I was a superb player and had seen it all. At that time I had played the game for some additional 10 years. But you really learn a lot at such a convention primarily because you meet new players who plays the game radically different form your group.

And guys like Richard dagnall who also participate in the European Con makes it great fun. I love his statement from last year "Yes - I rolled high, I am a genius" which in fact tells us a lot about the game.

And that's the key to learning in life in general isn't it?

Oh - and I have a special favour to ask you American guys. A Swede is going to attend this years US con. Please give him some fierce resistance in his game if you end up at the same table as him (I am a Dane )

Everyone should go. You'll certainly learn something.

Which Swede is to attend?

Yes, the swede needs to be on Dagnal's table. Of course, this swede is also invited to play a new face(like me).

Dagnal was the english player (and a real SAS soldier)I was referring to in my earlier post. Last year when England was invaded in 1940, He evac'ed and moved to India w/ the fleet. Had the americans build him 10 factories and then won the game.

I regret my words were alittle too strong about having experience to play. All are welcome and we always do have a good time. Everyone will find their place. I myself have a view that I wish to play the best to also become the best. The effect with my group at home has been dramatic.

One thing I have noticed as the games go on is male ego flows as we beat the hell out of each other on the table. No where else. M. Burke, you will loose, be it this life or the next.

I wondered how the CW had soo much stuff by the end of the game (looking at photos in the Annual).

*whine* I want my Americans to give me 10 factories!  (I'm playing the CW this year at a table vs. Steve Balk, who is playing Germany - am I right Steve?)

If you agree to surrender the UK, then I am sure the USA will build you 10 factories.
