Knowing this game, this topic isn't for the faint of hear.

I have never played the allies but a Japanese stock game usually took me about 4 hours, but with the CHS, there was so much stuff new that I took 2 days!

Not that I am complaining...

In all honesty?

As the Japanese, I spend between 12 and 20 hours.

Yeah, I'd identify with 40 to 50 hrs for the setup since how you weight your initial strikes determines the tempo of your operations ( and their weighting ) throughout the first half of 1942 - e.g. If you go weakly into the Rabaul/PM/Noumea axis on December 7th then you are still going to be weak there at the beginning of March 1942.

So, since it sets your tempo and weighting for the first 6 months of the war it is important to do it properly and that means taking a good bit of time.

Yeah, I really spend a lot of time getting the first turn going. Much of it is planning where my ships will be on turn 2. Also, the production gets more tweaking each time I start a game.

Dude two days?? or are you talking about two evenings when you are able to sneak away from the family???

1. The question begs are you talking Jap or USA turn?
2. I know every strategist is different but what are you prioritities to prepare?
3. Are these PBEM or AI games?
4. Do you try different tactics with each game or have you found a reliable formula for success?

None.  I started a game playing the IJ side and simply opened and ran the turn.  Of course it took until 3/3 for Singapore to fall, now it's mid-March and I'm still shipping things around.   I'm an IJ newbie though.

2 mornings and 2 evenings. And as I said above, I have never played the Allieds.

Priorities... its a big list. Let's see if I can remember or sum it up:

1. Supplies and resource levels
2. Industry, engines and plane building
3. transportation (lcus, supplies and resources)
3. Checking navy, air force and land units
4. Setting short, mid and long range goals (overall strategy)
5. ...
6. Profit? :)

So far I have only played the AI. PBEMs will probably make me more careful about details.

I hate formulas. When you get to one, the game looses interest. There is overall strategies that work against the AI, since it will stubbornly go for fixed objectives.

In my last game versus AI I took India... and put most of the allied navy heavy units at the bottom of the sea, in under a year. I did considered invading the USSR but I didn't bothered, since I had found a mod to play with.

I like to try different strategies, so next time I might not go to India. Maybe Australia and New Zealand, USSR, or a mad dash to the pacific isles. NA would be a giant leap of imagination.

In all fairness, the 1st turn is always the one that takes longer. After that you can probably do 15-30 minutes turns while you watch your war machine getting in gear and making minor tweaks here and there.

I took about 4 hours for my first PBEM as Japan. I took about 16 hours for my second attempt. I will probably take many more hours on my next one. This is one of those learning curves that never goes down! On the other hand, I may just stop playing Japan. I love playing CHS and but hate the pounding that the Allies get in the beginning but also hate the amount of time to make the first few turns as Japan. It is a lot like jumping into a cold river. Shock at first and then you are numb.

I spend about 12 hours setting up Japan, and about 8 hours setting up the Allies.

For Japan, anywhere from 8 to 20 hours, depending on the mod.

Allies: Well I guess I'm going to find out this weekend, first time I've played the grand campaign as allies.

I spend a week or two on Japan (2-4 hours a night). I make plans, contingency plans, and worst case plans that cover about the first 7-8 months of the war.

I play with Historical start, so first turn takes seconds only. Key in my password, save, send to opponent. Now the second turn, that is the dooozzzeee.

And turn 2 becomes your turn 1. When I play the AI, I use historical first turn. So turn 2 takes me 8 to 20 hours...lol.

Mine took me about 8-10 hours to set-up. I then saved it and use the same one every time I play japan, except with some minor tweeks.

Which brings up some other questions for the Japan, non-historic player:

1. Do you do a "dry-run" of your first turn by running it through a phantom allied player? If not, do you consider this gamey?

2. Do you use the same set-up everytime you play Japan, or do you make a new one up for each game?

No for both.  I start from scratch, incorporating what I learned since the previous start.  That's why it takes so long and also why I don't start too often.

Yeah, I consider a dry run gamey.  That's also why I don't peek at the Allied side.  Not looking at the Allied side really surprised me in CHS.  The Chinese Army is HUGE.  In the Threadwar PBEM, there's a Chinese land shark cutting a swath wherever it goes.  It started with over 800 guns too.  Currently it's down to <600, but still really nasty.
