I am playing the South on normal, 1861 scenario. It is now January 1863. It has been a tough time. Sherman is commanding the Union Army in the East and has taken Winchester, Manasas and Gordansville. Lee just defeated Sherman's attempt to take Fredricksburg, using all but 3 cavalry left in New Kent and about four units in Richmond (not considering small coastal garrisons). What a battle. South lost five generals - fortunately only wounded.

In the West, things not even that good. While I still hold Memphis and Vicksburg, Grant has followed the rail all the way to Grenada (he did take Jackson, but then withdrew most towards Corinth, allowing Bragg to retake) and most of Northern Alabama. Other army holding Chatanooga with little attempt to take.

The one bright spot is Van Dorn in Missouri. In an effort to get the Union to pull forces away from Vicksburg and Memphis, I launched an invasion of Missouri with Van Dorn as Army Commander, with Price and McCullouch and about 12 units. (Price had actually taken Springfield early in the war) Van Dorn fought and took Rolla and advanced all the way to St. Louis, where he attacked and was repulsed. Van Dorn then dispatched McCullough to take Jefferson City (which he did). Ather reinforcing Van Dorn up to around 16 units, I again attacked St. Louis and took it! I then sent cavalry to take an unoccupied Poplar Bluffs. So the South holds most of Missouri under the Missouri River

My question as to the AI is that the Union never reinforced Missouri, despite the success Van Dorn was having advancing across the state. I cannot imagine what would have happened if the Confederacy had captured St. Louis so late in the war. I never expected to take it as I figured the threat would result in substantial reinforcement, making the attack prohibitive, but since the objective of the offensive was to draw off forces, this wouldn't matter. Even now that I have take it. the Union's response seems pretty paltry, sending three infantry units, without leaders, to Callaway, MO and 3 infantry units, also without leaders, to Madison, IL. (I am playing with FOW, but I have seen these units move into position). There is no threat to this extended Confederate position. The Union does not even transfer any leaders. Conceivably, I could move into IL, possibly even Cairo and cut off the rails (assuming there is no one there, something I do not know). Shouldn't the AI have reacted with greater activity to this threat?

This offensive, that has lasted about seven months, has only used about 20 Confederate units and five leaders. I have only built one depot in Springfield - Van Dorn has done an amazing job getting unassisted initiative.

Is this move unanticipated by the AI? Or does the AI become single purposed as it invades Mississippi and will not respond to the threat?

You know, none of us tried that as a tester. So Gary never got a save to build the AI agianst that. Have you got game saves, if you do send them to Joel...That Van Dorn as an AC does pay off huh...

I've got the save for the turn after I took St. Louis, and I have one probably from seven or eight months earlier.  I will try to send them, but won't be getting back to my game computer until Sunday night.

Essentially, I sent Price into Springfield as soon as he got up the nerve.  I then sent an Admin/Eng to build a depot in Springfield.  I left McCullough in Little Rock to train whatever showed up and then send it off after Price.  Everything that grew up in Bowie (I used computer production) I sent to Little Rock (other than a unit I used to garrison coastal Texas).  As more troops were trained, I moved McCullough to join Price and placed another officer in Little Rock, continuing Little Rock as the training point.  It was probably not until April 62 that I sent Van Dorn in, when Lee became available. freeing up Joe and Beau to move West.  By then I had Price and McCullouch in Springfield with 12 units. As soon as Van Dorn had initiative, I sent him into Rolla.  He was there a couple of months as I moved another small commander into Springfield with three more units.  About this time I created a single cavalry unit with a leader to assist Van Dorn.  All this time, the Bowie to Little Rock to Springfield training dance went on.  It was probably September 62 before the abortive attack on St. Louis.  Then I noticed that Jefferson City was open, so I sent in McCulloch with three to four units (he lost the others at the first battle of St. Louis.  Van Dorn was reinforced and went in again in January 1863 and successfully took St. Louis with about 14 units.  Poplar Bluffs was empty so I sent the cavalry to take it.

Interesting! In my first real game as rebs I'm doing exactly the same thing. I am up next to St Louis and about to take Jefferson city. I've seen the union AI build up so modest armies around me (I have about 10 and they have 5 to 7) but certainly not a strategic response. Also use Van Dorn as AC .. though makes it hard to have effective cavalry in far west without him.

AI will always be limited, and there will always be something the AI script does not expect, and hence will not respond to. The AI is there to train you on the mechanics of the game so you can play against real opponents. :P

How do I attach a file to an e-mail to Joel? By the way, Van Dorn has just rolled into Madison Illinois!

Just email me at 2by3@2by3games.com, look for your save file in the /dat/save directory inside your game's root directory, and then attach the file to your email using your normal email attach file command.
