This must happen to others......

All this takes place inside a large building, no chance for support, artilery does nothing that I can tell.

I move my vet rfl squad 1 space forward. Bam it's gone. I moved next to a space with 3 units in it (on a VH of course). Try again with Eng squad.......same thing. Let's try again (they should be tired of killing my guys right?). Third time is not a charm, unit survives but retreats and is useless now.

Any ideas on how to get around this?

Maybe I should go try the stock market instead.

Light mortars and scouts might be the answer. Establish were the enemy is and mortar them (Lt. Mortars won’t cause extensive damage outside the target hex) move in with your infantry possibly reinforced with engineers and finish them off. The mortars will not kill many enemies but it will suppress them.

On the control panal within the game there is a button with a hex what looks like a tank firing and a Z.
This is for direct Hex firing, if you cant see something you can still fire at the hex its in.
Im suprised I havnt seen anyone talk about this function on the forum yet its quite usefull.

I concur with wulfir. If you're in the reverse (defending bldg to bldg), when an enemy infantry unit appears in the bldg next to you, try NOT firing 1st. If you fire , you will shoot at an extremely low % (3 ish), if they fire 1st, they shoot low, and expose themselves, and you shoot back at much higher number.

Yes, trying to approach an hex the way you did, could be a pure nightmare for the most part of the times; I'm sure if you would have continued bringing yr troops close in, you would have been completely wiped out.
Try to find a line of sight to the target hex and apply enough suppressive fire with armor/infantry, then move yr assault squads in.
If you have no LOS, then only possibility left is to shell the hex with mortars/arty, maybe for a couple of turns.

Arty doesn't work inside a large building. I am already heavily engaged so recon troops won't work. Recon troops die to easily.

Z won't work, inside a building it will only let you shoot 1 space away.

No line of site available, even if I suround the building.

Ya, I remember having to do that in my current MC:LV campaign. Lost about 15 guys. Finally brought up one of my most populous units and they managed to survive and surpress the unit(which had a flame-thrower- ouch). That enemy unit was quite aggressive so if I had to do it agin, I'd leave one strong unit out there with opfire possiblities.

Have you ever noticed that your own forces never manage to be that effective? ;)

I've been using the 'Z' key a lot lately. It's great against units in good cover and multiple units in the same hex.

For the in-close assault where you're to close for Arty and can't get that long range shot to suppress the target, try leading the assault with your small units (scouts, snipers, inf AT).

Set their range to '0' ('Y' key) and try to move them as few hexes as possible. A unit in this posture can quite often get adjacent and remain unspotted long enough to get off a couple of shots. If you work these units in pairs, you might be able to set up a flanking situation.

Enemy armor is quite susceptible to this tactic, Infantry less so, and enemy scouts will probably still spot you unless they're already suppressed.

That's another, albeit desperate, method of supressing the target before moving in for the kill.

I set up a battle with packed stone buildings with a vic hex in the middle with a '44 Soviet smg platoon and hq defending it.

How much arty do you have available, with various amounts of arty support used for various troops, from a half dozen units of scouts to a cav company. 4 120mm mortar squads tore the defenders to bits, the same for some of the 3 tube 50mm mortars. The defenders were routed before my units came up next to them. Use your A0 or a good fo to call in the unobserved arty, the idea is to get suppression, not kills. Let it hit one turn, then call it in again on the same hex with .1 delay, the next turn move in, if any units shoot back, shift hex to the new hex with most mortars it shouldn't go above .3 for the shifted hex (with German '44 120mm mortars shifted by a recon unit in the buildings it went to .2).

Keep the units out of the blast zone (3-4 hexes away) while pounding), then rush in.

I tried with Wurfs, they collapsed many buildings, but didn't suppress the enemy as well as the 120's, plus they landed all over the place, the safe zone was more like 6 hexes away.

With 4 120mm mortars and 6 recon squads the defenders were totally wiped out without even a single casualty for the attackers.

One thing you might not be aware of, units with 0 suppression are harder to spot. So if you want to sneak in there, don't let the units pick up suppression before they enter the building.
thanks, John.

I've been using the right-click-R key a lot lately. It's great for keeping my units in the position to actually do something.:D

Jack - On my installation of WAW, here is what happens:

"R" Key = Rally
Right-Click = Unit Information Screen
Combination of above two = Information Screen

Something different happen with your WAW? Possible.

If you don't mind me answering for Jackk; he means the "R" button . left clicking on it or hitting the r key just 1/2's the suppression every time you click it. If you right click on the "R" button, it "max rallies". The unit will rally until it is comletely rallied or fails a check. Saves alot of clicking.

Boy! You think you know it all - and then something new (old?) pops up to remind you that you DON'T know it all.

Thanks for the right-click on the R button tip - probably save me hours in gaming time. ;)

In 7.1 AFVs can move through buildings without automatically being immobilized. Can you drive a heavy AFV up to the hex in question, moving through the outside building hex to get at the interior one where the enemy is? Brumbars or KV2s are especially good for this. If you fire one of these, they cause splash damage so don't have any friendly troops nearby.

Aye, that's what I meant. It's saved me a keyboard in WT :-)
