I corrected the Finnish names in the mech.exe of version 4.2. I replaced the weirdo names with proper names of same size, so any offsets didn't move. You can download it here.

This should be easy to put into v4.3 (if there is one) by you Matrix guys... just copy/paste it into the new exe, the start point (Perttula) is 0x2129f9H and the end point (Vihavainen) 0x212cf3H. [This message has been edited by Kharan (edited October 02, 2000).]

Does the secure PBEM check that the exe file is intact?

I'm pretty sure PBEM doesn't check if both players have the same names, unless it compares *every* byte of the players' exes, which would take a few megs every turn ... The only thing I changed is the Finnish names (their letters, not their sizes, so that everything after the names wouldn't be moved downwards), everything else is intact, all the offsets the same. Does a chscksum so if you use two different files it will bomb out so make sure your opponant uses the same exact .exe and OOb files or you will have problems.

PBEM (secure and unsecure) seems to work between the default mech.exe and the mech.exe with the real Finnish names. Here's the complete list btw... Perttula Ahlqvist Alalahti Annala Viitala Auer Cajander Kuistio Erkko Fagerholm Koskela Eronen Hietanen Hakala Hakkila Hannunen Asikainen Holsti Salonen Jaakkola Jalas Jarvi Jutikkala Kaila Kallio Kangas Kekkonen Kivimaki Koskimaki Kuistio Kuusinen Laakso Lahti Laitinen Linkomies Mattinen Merikanto Musta Niemi Nisonen Niukkanen Nurmi Ojala Oksanen Paasikivi Hakkarainen Pakaslahti Pekkala Haataja Ranta Ruokomaki Saari Saarinen Rontu Siilasvuo Svinhufvud Talvela Tanner Tapola Tuominen Valkoinen Heimola Laaksonen Waltari Jama Vanhala Wuorinen Laurila Laitinen Kariluoto Kapanen Kallio Salminen Jakala Laitinen Melaluoto Tuomainen Alanen Vuorila Sarastie Varha Nirvi Asikainen Linna Majala Lehtola Kekkonen Korhonen Koskimaki Salonen Saarikanto Rokka Vihavainen Now I can't make it any easier than this! By the way, all the names are in mech.exe as ASCII, with 00H (NUL) separating them. They can be edited in any hex editor. [This message has been edited by Kharan (edited October 03, 2000).]

Jama? Varha? Nirvi? So secure PBEM does not work and does work... I wonder. What if someone installs a localized version of mech.exe, wouldn't the checksum fail in that case, too? [This message has been edited by Fuerte (edited October 03, 2000).]

Every Finn here should know Varha and Nirvi, and the third's someone who I play with . Anyway, they're all Finnish.

Well cease your wondering and try it out yourself .

Perhaps it does not work if you change the exe after you have started the secure PBEM? Did you try this?

I just started a secure PBEM game with the old mech.exe, played a few turns, then changed to the mech.exe with the modified leader names, played another few turns and ended the game by surrendering. Didn't see any problems. [This message has been edited by Kharan (edited October 03, 2000).]

Cool, then Paul's information must be wrong. Still... nothing is more frustrating than finding out that the PBEM does not work, so I'm still wondering. Thanks!

Good initiative, Kharan. Now we finally have some REAL names . Should warrant a humorous comment in the next Pelit-magazine, I hope . Yells "Tulta! Perkele! Tulta! Perkele!" while shooting with the Suomi SMG. I like the few selected weapon sounds with additional shouts . The Russian sounds aren't bad either (have I heard these by any chance in Close Combat or Rogue Spear before?). ------------------ Markku "Mac" Rontu "Understanding is a three-edged sword, your side, their side and the truth." - Sheridan in B5

Yes, you are right, you heard the yells in Rogue... I made them to be more realistic by adding some shouting in the backround ;-) By the way that "Tulta!"-guy is me, but the "Perkele!" is not me, but made by me... some Finn inside humour ;-) Ilja PS. It's nice to have my own last name in the game but when playing as Russian it's damn hard to kill my only grand-grandfather ;-) hehe

I was wrong... sometimes it lets you play a few turns with different exes, but then it displays an error message loading the game. So don't use the exe with the corrected names when playing secure PBEM, unless your opponent has it too.

Unsecure PBEM and online play do work between the original and corrected exes, naturally. Let's still hope Matrix includes those names in 4.3, so that the Finnish PBEM-players don't have to suffer from the camp-humor .

Kharan, can you send me another 10 names? I was putting them in off of your list and ran short. The length of them doesn't matter as long as it is 15 letters or less. Thanks, Tom

You guys amaze me, especially those who belong to the Finnish lobby. Why is there not a Norwegian lobby or a Belgian lobby or a Greek lobby? I'm NOT poking fun at you guys, but are there really that many Finns who are getting into this game? If so, I think it's wonderful, BUT, wouldn't it follow that you would encourage development of Arctic scenarios involving the Finns and their German allies?

Yeah, I'd like some scenarios too but I know they're pretty demanding to get done. Especially with the research to get them as historical as is fit. Does someone know good places in the web where I could get some maps of Finnish battle sites? And as a little side note... there is a Close Combat III conversion to Winter War and onwards . ... so all in good time . ------------------ Markku "Mac" Rontu "Understanding is a three-edged sword, your side, their side and the truth." - Sheridan in B5

If you want to use real Finnish names then you can find the names of WW2 KIA soldiers at page http://tietokannat.mil.fi/menehtyneet/index_en.php3 And yes, that site is maintained by Finnish Army :-) And a good starting point to Finnish military in WW2 is site http://www.hkkk.fi/~yrjola/war/finland_wwii.html/ (No, that is not my site, and nobody I know personally). Hey, that was a nice site. I found 13 relatives that I didn't know from there. Obviously, my grandfather wasn't among those because he still lives. So Nirvi is out of question, because I couldn't find a match with his family name? Perhaps none of his family actually died, dah. Of course, that's better for the results . ------------------ Markku "Mac" Rontu "Understanding is a three-edged sword, your side, their side and the truth." - Sheridan in B5

Huh, it was a bit frightening to find out that there were 157 soldiers with the same last name as I (Pesonen), of whose two had the same place of birth (Tuupovaara). Both of them were killed younger than I am now. This is really "the reality of it all". Salute to those guys!

There is actually a Close Combat 4: Viipuri coming too. It has new campaign too, and it's made by the same guys as CC3:Talvisota (they are both from Denmark, can you imagine?!?). It will also have great new sounds (can they be bad when I do them )! So Finns are a majority in wargaming if you look at the size of the country...? Ilja

Shame that I don't have CC4... CC3 rocks too much (note: the original setting might be worse than CC2 but the mods, the mods...) So, Ilja, why do we have so few Finnish scenarios? I think we shall have to remedy that . ------------------ Markku "Mac" Rontu "Understanding is a three-edged sword, your side, their side and the truth." - Sheridan in B5

I don't know why we have so few Finn scenarios in WAW... I only made sound files. Propably it's because most of the scenariomakers are non-Finns But in SPMW I will make sure that Finns have maaaany scenarios and campaigns (Russia attacks, Sweden attacks, we attack Sweden - this one is a must , UN missions all over the world... lots of stuff) Ilja
