My subject heading is by no means to attract any racial or political response, I'm just curious if anyone has made a list or chart for the most powerful to the least powerful country to choose from for playing SPWAW. I'm sure many have certain pluses & minuses, but I know, for instance, when playing another game (close combat) the Allies normally need a few more POINTS to purchase with than the Germans due to the German tank strength, etc.

So I'm wondering if anyone has ranked, say the French, Russian, etc. and how they all fit into things.

Thanks.

I think that it is partially the equipment and national characteristics of a countries troops, plus morale and experience, and player tactics that make a country better than another. That said, pure equipment and troop wise, Germany wins the tank category hands down. US infantry are very well equiped, and Airborne or Ranger are second to none. (Japanese infantry are also brutes!)

Keep in mind that year will affect morale, experience, and equipment. Prior to the war, France is generally believed to have had the best tanks. Soviet KV's were all but unstoppable early on.

Hope this helps. Remember, if you enjoy the country and use its strengths properly, any country can be "the best"

The year in which you fight has a big importance, too, either for available equipment and morale/experience.
Try to fight an all tank battle playing German against Russian before you can get Panthers or Tigers: those nasty T34's or KV's will be yr nightmare for a long while...

I like the Poles!

For no particular reason other than that I think there was plenty of fight in them during the war. A stubborn and defiant lot, although not always successful. Something of the constant underdog. All this makes them kind of fun to play, I think. :)

This makes me wonder if the game programming can actually reflect the differences. Mind you, I know SPWAW is one of the most realistic WWII games around, but can it be... THAT GOOD??

Yes the of the 8.8 cm round bouncing off a T-34 is much preferable to the of the 5 cm.

I've had great fun with the Italians - if I can convince my opponent to turn Off National Characteristics and set experience to 70-75.

They really do have some fascinating equipment and interesting formations (like the Flame Squad - whoo hoo!)

Couple that with my historically steeped opponents, and I can give them one h*** of a surprise. They just don't expect that kind of delivery from the Italians.

In this case, a bad reputation preceding your forces, can offer a psychological advantage. :)

Then you better check to see if there are any Canadian scenarios because the Poles were part of the Canadian 1st Army in the liberation of Holland. And I definitely remember their battles arounf Caen. A grinder that was.

Yeah I know, 1st Polish Armoured Division. A bit of a disgrace that they were not allowed to participate in the post-war victory parade in London.

The Finns are a sentimental favorite. I just got done playing one of Wild Bill’s scenarios, Ethiopians against the Italians and that was a lot of fun.

I've surprised a few PBEM opponents while playing as the Poles. Their 7-TP tank can hold its own against any other in early war battles, and the TKS-nkm recon tank has an APCR load-out that you wouldn't believe (avg. is about 200 APCR rounds...I know, you don't believe it :D )

This is only what I think...

Axis allies has the most effective troops in the game (Taking Italy of the chart of cource).

So if they cost a bit more than other... who cares.

If you play the Germans in 1941 under new mech.exe and patched LV:

1) They can't see anything, even with 150% search they are lucky to see anyone or anything in the adjacent hex, until the enemy fires on them, natch. EVen then they have neglected their annual vision checkup.

2) They can't hit anything. Per James Whitmore as Halsey: "They couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a bass fiddle." Experienced German troops (I assume assault troops in Barbarossa were experienced, otherwise why send them) now have an exceedingly difficult time with hitting anything, no matter how big or how small - had to increase "To Hit" to 120% just to stay even with Soviets. Your mileage may vary.

No question the Germans need target range quality time - no question this has changed. "Normal" installation with 7.1 and MCLV patched up.

I usually like to play one of the BIG 5 nations as I call them in SPWAW

1.US Army/Marines (actually 2 here)
2.Great Britan
3.Germany
4.Soviet Union
5.Japan

What are you talking about?
Ive experienced none of this. My units have no trouble spotting and my units have hit percentages that I think are pretty accurate.
The Soviets are better than most of the Army because they are the Border Guards and NCO students. Ive fought a few platoons of regular Soviet infantry and they suck. They are always the first to run or be slaughtered (usually one right after another with my Panzer tactics).
Troops on the Defensive are usually going to have a better chance to hit and plus they are entrenched which makes it even harder. The terrain is full of forests, smoke and small buildings so lines of sight are short and fragmented.
Maybe what you said is true and I just havnt noticed but I think it is dead on and heaps of fun.

You haven't experienced it, you haven't lived.

Ain't my imagination - they don't see nothin' until they are in the adjacent hex - unless they are fired upon and then it is a tossup. As to marksmanship - the AFV's in particular simply cannot hit much of anything - at two and three hex range, sometimes closer. Am talking repeated firing, without having moved. Miss -miss -miss. Second AFV: Miss - miss - miss. Many times.

Maybe the game engine doesn't like me.

Please to remember, this is in LV - I haven't had the time yet to do much of anything with the regular scenarios and nothing from the older campaigns. If they start seeing a lot better in subsequent LV battles - and shooting a whole lot better than their Soviet counterparts - I will put it down to a one-time, specific scenario event.

I don't think that is the case, but it is nice to see other players have better luck with their Germans.

Bing

P.S. wasn't due to smoke. And I never said it wasn't fun. Am enjoyng LV tremendously - nice to be able to be warm, well fed and coffeed and be able to play a great wargame and look out the window and laugh at the ongoing snowstorm. Pretty heavy snow here.
