Hmm, I disagree here with you. But I have played NikMod only a few days long time ago and maybe it makes the game too different. In my other game I´m in similar situation like you (talking about this particular area) and my northern Australia bases are swimming in supplies brought from Karachi. It would be certainly more comfortable to have the Darwin-Brisbane supply line open, but as long as it ties up 3+ japanese divisions and a few hundrets of japanese fighters I can live with it.
Barges are fine for resuplying smaller bases, but are hardly capable to supply 2-3 strongholds with 80k troops and dozens of planes far away from supply source. It is too risky to leave the destiny of 2-3 divisions in hands of barges. From his point of view it might be "get them away now or never".

Btw you are not shipping supplies from Karachi? Do you have a HR against it or does he guard the way with CVs? I´m just curious..

The Japanese have enough barges at this date to deliver 4000 supply points within 3 days from PM to Thursday. So in a month you can deliver something like 30-40000 supplies! How many do you need? 10 barges are nothing, 100 are a perfect supply source and you can deliver as many supplies as needed.

I´m shipping supply from India to Australia but only very limited amounts, surely not the 1.000.000 supplies I need in the next months as I consider it at least "semi gamey" to supply all my troops, ships, aircraft (which are 90% US) with supply and fuel from India. But there´s no hr against it, it´s just not my taste...

Of course if do that, then those three bases on New Guinea are not that important. But still, all troop convoys would have to go around Australia.

I have very very bad experience with supply flow from Dobodura or Lae to PM. For me it means that not only Thursday Is has to be supplied by sea, but PM and Gili Gili too. And there is a big difference in supplying Thursday Is from Port Moresby and supplying all three bases from Rabaul or Dobodura..

I had never problems seeing supply coming from Buna to PM, this is the same as supply going from Rangoon to Akyab over the trails and that is something many (most) people rely on in their games. In fact it´s even easier as it´s shorter from PM to Buna than from Akyab to Rangoon.

Look at this huge TF!!! We spotted a TF going to Gili Gili two days ago so (as usual ) we sent a surface combat TF to go after the ships. This is the evacuation convoy for the troops at Gili Gili and Marblehead did quite a good job. Is was not really a good decision to put the heavy cruiser into the transport TF as the performance wasn´t good. Ashigara was mostly hit by 5 and 3 inch shells but also a couple of 6 inch shells from Marblehead. While the 5 inch shells didn´t even penetrate at 4000 yards, Marblehead´s 6 inch shells penetrated the heavy cruiser´s armor and caused damage. In return our light cruiser was hit several times by 8 inch shells but either most hits were FOW or all those hits did surprisingly low damage as Marblehead retires with only 39 sys, 18 flt and 21 fire. Clearly it was an Allied victory. There were a lot bombers in range set to naval attack but not surprising, they didn´t attack this huge TF...

damn it! As there was only the attack from the CS I thought this would just be a nuissance raid but nevertheless I´ve set my CVLs with DD escort to full speed South. They moved only 5 instead of 10 hexes though and the Japanese were able to close in. We launch the first strike. I was amazed to see only a mini KB as this would be too dangerous for me if I would play the Japanese. Imagine this TF meeting two of my fleet carriers instead of two CVLs. The Avengers manage a hit on Hiyo (guess it will retire) and another hit on Mutsu (which was a dud though...).

What´s very interesting is the fact that the enemy carriers WEREN´T spotted as I DON´T have any search planes in this area. The enemy CVs reacted into range of my CVLs and we launched a strike, but we DIDN´T spot them. In fact, my carriers should have been attacked, while we would not be able to launch as we haven´t spotted the enemy. Another design flaw...

Allied Ships

CVL Cowpens, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 6, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
1 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet

here comes the enemy´s strike, of course with disastrous results. CVL Cowpens immediately sunk, Bellau Wood is still in good shape. The enemy torp bombers achieve a 25% hit rate, my carrier pilots have been somewhere around 5% during the war so far, even when attacking uncapped transports. None of my Wildcats attacked the bombers...

Nice move by Hortlund, even though we were unlucky. Two days earlier or later and he would have met NOTHING. In months, he would have met only a couple of AKs, perhaps some APs. We send two CVLs out at exactly the right time to meet the enemy. That´s life, Hortlund proved once again a very good timing...

But there´s also something very interesting. The aircraft losses show 17 Kates and 12 Vals as lost to ops! How can that be? Was CV Hiyo so heavily damaged from one torp that the carrier wasn´t operational anymore to take up his bombers? But they should have diverted to the CVL then. Just very bad die rolls for Hortlund. Something is strange here:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defending force 22334 troops, 105 guns, 112 vehicles, Assault Value = 599

CVL Cowpens was sunk by IJN carries in the Eastern Pacific, just one month after comissioning...

USS Cowpens (CVL-25, originally CV-25, later AVT-1), 1943-1960
USS Cowpens, an 11,000-ton Independence class small aircraft carrier built at Camden, New Jersey, was commissioned in May 1943 with the hull number CV-25. She was redesignated CVL-25 two months later and arrived in the Pacific in September to join the war against Japan. After seeing combat for the first time in the October 1943 raid on Wake Island, she participated in the Gilberts and Marshalls invasions during the last two months of 1943 and the first two months of 1944. From February until May 1944, Cowpens and other Fifth Fleet aircraft carriers attacked enemy targets in the Central Pacific and New Guinea. She took part in the Marianas campaign, including the Battle of the Philippine Sea, during June 1944, and continued her support of operations in that area into July.

In September 1944, Cowpens covered the invasions of the Palaus and Morotai. Over the next three months, she participated in raids on Okinawa, Formosa and the Philippines and in the great Battle of Leyte Gulf. Her combat activities continued into January and February 1945, with raids around the South China Sea and Philippines areas and support for the landings at Lingayen Gulf and Iwo Jima.

Following a west coast overhaul, Cowpens returned to the war zone in June 1945. During the last months of the Pacific War, her aircraft pounded Wake Island and targets in the Japanese home islands. Support for the occupation of Japan was followed by duty transporting war veterans home from the Pacific during late 1945 and early 1946. Cowpens was decommissioned in January 1947 and spent the rest of her Navy service in the Reserve Fleet. She was briefly reclassified as an aircraft transport, with the new hull number AVT-1, in May 1959 and was sold for scrapping a year later.

ML sunk! Another one! I really like those kills, without mines, my life will be far easier, even though I have lost only a couple of ships to mines... I have a lot of subs (some three dozen) in the enemy´s shipping lanes, but it seems there´s nearly no sea traffic... No idea which sea lanes the enemy ships use, but all major ports are covered by my subs, still I haven´t met ships for quite some time...

4 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet

strike from Kai Island on the main TF that arrived at Sorong during the night. 94 Corsairs/Thunderbolts on escort should impress Hortlund. He didn´t put Cap over Sorong anyway. I´m not that happy with the performance of my bombers though, especially the Barracudas didn´t hit much today. 4 ships are crippled though. Amazingly once again, my carriers didn´t launch a single aircraft!!!!! Don´t know why this happens again and again with my carriers and if they launch, the hit rate of the bombers is lousy. I can´t rely on my carrier TFs, they are only good enough to put a more or less effective Cap into the air but nothing more it seems...

Cony sunk, Caldwell has good chances to make it. This is what I was talking about all the time! As long as I haven´t secured the shipping lanes between Brisbane and Darwin, it will be hard to move further North. It seems it took Hortlund an eternity to notice that too as this is the first strike in this region. I´m so glad he evacuated most of his troops in Southern New Guinea. This strike came from Lae. I moved those DDs into this hex to attack a sub that has been sitting here for a week. This strike clearly shows: no more convoys without carrier escorts between Brisbane and Darwin. Attack on Thursday, PM or Gili Gili has just become priority again... With one of those bases I will be able to surpress Lae and the other bases and this should make my shipping safer.

we achieve a 2:1 already, inflict heavy casualties within the defenders and take only minor losses! This is excellent news, we will now keep on attacking. The base will fall soon and we will have our fist stronghold on New Guinea. Couple of seabees were landed already and more are ready to be shipped in as soon as the base is ours. Expect to see a level 5 airfield within the next 3-4 weeks.

Situation: the first Corsair IV (80 / month) for the British carriers will leave factory in 4 days, the Hellcats (187 / month) for the US carriers in 7/43. My carriers are due for the 4/43 upgrade, as well as a lot of cruisers, BBs and DDs. The sys damage within my ships in this region (means most of the US Navy, all Brit BBs and all but one Brit CVs) is between 4 and 10 points, means most of those ships need an overhaul too. The repairs, upgrades of the ships and upgrades of the carrier fighter squadrons will take at least a month, so in 8/43 the IJN has to fear a far more dangerous US Navy. My ships are retiring from bringing the reinforcements to Babo now and I will launch one more invasions in this region before sending my ships back to Brisbane and Sydney. The question now is if I will do an invasion in Southern New Guinea before or after upgrading my ships and squadrons.

June is nearing and this will mean that the first Corsair IVs will leave factory to upgrade my Seafire squadrons.

It also means that our truce in China is over and we have spotted already 50+ enemy LCUs marching towards our bases. At the moment we see 25 units next to Ichang and 25 next to Homan. Also got intel about a lot of troops preparing for targets in China, North China Army is prepping for Sian for example. Sian? Makes me wonder if Hortlund wants to bypass Homan completely when he has this HQ prepping for Sian already. 5 units are next to Yenen but 5 units can´t achieve anything up there. Guess they´re only there in a defensive position as he perhaps will guard his fronts this time. During the Japanese spring/summer offensive we were able to take the whole North and march to Peking when we were stopped because Hortlund told me he would use Kwangtung area units even though we have a hr against it. This then lead to the truce until 6/43 where I had to give up the conquered territory in the North and abandon the bases conquered historically in the South. All our bases have level 9 forts, my troops are 100% prepped and nearly all are 100% combat ready. Supply is good (for Chinese terms) and we have already moved 200 Allied fighters from India into China as we see a lot of crowded Japanese airfields in China. If Hortlund attacks (and I guess there´s no doubt he will) then we will strike back against his industry in this region, forcing him to use A LOT of his fighters to guard his bases. We have British Libs and Wellingtons, US LB-30 and B-24 and we will mostly use US fighters (P-40, P-47 and even two Corsair squadrons) in China as I want to preserve my British fighter pilots. If needed I can also shift in 150 high exp Spits for point defense and 200 Beaufighters for long range escort. I´m confident to lay waste on the Japanese industry, preferrable attacking enemy resource centers. Should be possible to destroy some 1000 resource centers which means something like 8% of the total Japanese resource production. The enemy airforce didn´t want to fight in Burma, if Hortlund attacks, then the enemy airforce MUST fight in China!

IMO, best choice for him would be to NOT attack as in that case I would just do nothing. If he attacks, then we will have the chance to wear down his airforce (as he has retreated all his aircraft from the frontlines or at least out of range of my fighters) and we can kill off a lot of his industrial potential. Of course there´s the chance that China will get wiped out but this will be as hard this time as it was in real life. For sure it won´t be a cake walk if I don´t do a couple of very stupid things. If he attacks in China then this will really weaken his overal position. We will see...

Aircraft Attacking:

3 x Wellington III bombing at 10000 feet

as you can see, the truce ended and as the IJA is marching I knew my opponent would attack. So I sent my bombers to destroy the resource center at Hanoi. 600 resource points there but no fighters and nearly no flak... amazing as I have already attacked here months ago, destroying a lot resource points (which ALL were repaired!! This took a lot of supply).

This strike came from Kweiyang (China).

unbelievable, Hortlund even uses Betties in China! They were coming from Manchuko on a long range strike. Don´t understand why he takes this risk. Would there have been 4 base forces at Sian then half of the Betties would have been damaged and a lot lost due to the very long range to the target...

There are 50 IJA units in the area Homan - Ichang. It really seems at the moment that the drive will go directly to Sian. We have IJA troops in Homan and Ichang, but some 25 units try to flank Homan, seem to go to Sian. We have some 4000 assault points available to stop the IJA outside of Sian...

I was 100% sure that we will see a para attack. This time it was at least a full strike and not just 30 men. Impossible for him to take this base with paras. Important to defend it though as we get some auto supply in this base and every single supply point counts in China...

for what reason ever, Hortlund keeps attacking Sian, even though he scored enough hits yesterday to close it down three times... the supply hits hurt though... if I would be him, I would try to close as many airfields in this area as possible as he knows I have moved a lot of aircraft to China to take on the IJAAF/IJNAF. The more airfields I have, the easier it will be to hurt him. First attempt to hurt him tomorrow...

losses are 95% within our HQ units in the lead. Will move out two corps as the enemy has no chance to break through 2000 assault points behind level 9 forts. And I don´t even expect him to attack, this is just an Army to siege Homan, while the majority of the IJA is trying to attack Sian.

If he succeeds in China then there are surely some advantages, but if he doesn´t wipe out the Chinese thean he will lose A LOT! If he knocks out China except Chungking, then he frees up some 8-10.000 assault points. If he keeps 4.000 to garisson China (that´s the av I use in my game against Swift to garission China, but that´s far more than the garisson requirements are) then he still has some 6000 assault points to use on the continent. Either he tries to knock out Russia or he just uses them against an invasion out of India. With 6000 additional assault points it will be impossible to achieve something on the continent for me. He could also lift out all the Southern and Burma area troops from Burma to use them elsewhere and replace them with China command units. And of course there are also some HI/oil/ressource centers in China.

On the downside he now has the problem that I´m wearing down his airforce in China and he will also lose A LOT of HI/oil/ressources from my strategic bombing. If I would be him, I would have just done nothing in China at this point.

Horltund absolutely keeps concentrating on bombing Sian. No sense in doing that but with all the sigint I got about divisions and HQs prepping for Sian, this makes it more and more obvious that he just wants to bypass Homan and go directly to Sian. first attack from aircraft based at the recently captured airfield of Babo. The agile DDs escaped a hit but the big AP is finished off... like I´ve said, with the loss of the first base on New Guinea it will just become more and more dangerous for IJN shipping in this area. Without any sign of aircover the IJN´s ships are just sitting ducks. Either he fights to the death here and at least killing lots of aircraft and ships of mine or not sending ships at all into this area would be better than only sending uncovered ships into their death. Would my aircraft launch more frequently and in bigger numbers, then it would look even more severe...

Wuhan´s Cap did get quite some reinforcement from other bases around but our escorts did well, achieving a 1:1 due to the fact that most of them were very experienced. With the loss of those 20 pilots their average exp drops though. The bombers get through nearly unharmed and torch 3 dozen of aircraft on the ground. Not as many as I´ve thought as there are over 300 aircraft at this base. We had P-47 and Corsairs ordered for a sweep but bad weather prevented their strike so it didn´t work as well as planned. Still, this is exactly what I was talking about. We now have the chance to really hurt the enemy´s airforce and without on map fighter pilot training (hr proposed by Hortlund), every Japanese fighter pilot will be replaced by crap. If he loses half of his airforce in China then there´s nothing that can stop my drive deep into the SRA. But thinking about it, he doesn´t try to stop me anyway. At least it seems so...

as you can see at those three bases, there are only "minor" Japanese forces, they won´t even think about doing an attack. The majority of the IJA seems to try to march directly to Sian.

the next invasion is going in... Hortlund spotted most of those TFs a couple of days ago, but again, there´s no sign of any attempts to act against this invasion on Timor. Lautern has far more troops so I decided to go for Koepang on the far West of the island. Dili and Lautern can be surpressed and I guess I will just bypass Lautern. Dili seems not to be held that strong and two of the three bases on Timor are easily enough to then go further North. Some 50-70.000 enemy troops are then trapped at Lautern, doesn´t see much of a chance for Hortlund to bring them out. At the first moment I was shocked about the high number of shots fired, but it seems there´s no dedicated CD unit as my ships took nearly no damage. Later it turned out that there are mostly AA rgts at the base with another base force and an IJA division...

then my second TF also started unloading. More than 80% of my troops unloaded on day one, we had nearly 200 ships in two invasion TFs with one dedicated supply TF, a surface combat TF with two BBs as cover at the landing site and three CV TFs with another SC TF one hex North of Koepang to take on incoming airstrikes - of which none showed up...

I´m amazed to see that Hortlund didn´t upgrade his dive bombers to Lilies or Helens as those dive bombers aren´t much of a use in Nikmod. I would not have a problem at all if he would upgrade all of them.

huge tranport TF at Wasile. Strange composition with two APs in the TF. Don´t know if this TF was bringing troops in or if it just was a supply TF. Only two ships are in trouble and once again all our torps missed. The DDs used 60% of their torps. Torp hit rate of the IJN and the Brits in WITP is just too high, while hit rate of the USN is just too low.

we spotted ships disbanded in port and launch a nice strike from Kai Island. Again I don´t know if those ships were damaged and therefor disbanded in port, but again, if they were damaged then I guess at least some of them could have been brought away from the front line already. Nice way to lose ships... If you lose ships en masse in late 44 or early 45 then it doesn´t matter, but IMO the ship losses of Hortlund are really getting more and more severe...

This big cruiser TF took position one hex North of Sorong, so only 4 hexes away from Babo´s airfield where I´ve got Corsairs, Thuds and Barracudas (torp range 5!!). Don´t know what he was up for but I guess my Barracudas disturbed his plan... All I can think about is a bombardment of Babo or Kai Island but in both cases the cruisers would be in range of my torp bombers BEFORE they can move in as in the best case it´s (for the IJN) it´s 5 hexes for my torp bombers whereas it´s still 6 hexes for the ships to close in to my bases as they have to move around and island...

I was already happy with my Barracudas in the am phase but to my surprise they took off also in the pm phase putting another two torps into the enemy cruisers. Nagara now takes her second torp and could be in trouble... My level bombers from Kai Island were set to port attack Amboina... exactly the wrong day it seems...

Attacking force 4006 troops, 129 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 972

Defending force 33878 troops, 361 guns, 6 vehicles, Assault Value = 518

as you can see in the screenshot, there are 5 AA units at Koepang and this is what I was always talking about. No wonder this base puts up a flak defense like Berlin in mid 44...
But the composition of LCUs here also makes me optimistic to take Koepang faster and with fewer troops than Babo which had a similar assault value while I nearly had two times as many av. I will soon order a deliberate attack which probably will take out A LOT of the AA guns as the AA units are the ones in the lead in the troop stack and are therefor the ones who will get hit the most. Then it will be the time to fly daily air to ground attacks with my Mitchells which will most of the time hit the division which will lead to a high disruption of this unit. As this is the only high assault value unit here, a disruption of 70% of this unit will result in only some 200 assault points left for the defender. This is my theory! We will see, I´ve got three more RCTs prepped for Koepang which I could bring in within 8 days. Note that I have brought a lot of heavy artillery but all those 155mm guns are doing nearly no damage. This once again shows me that it´s just not necessary to bring art units in an invasion. I would have been far better off to use those ships that brought the artillery to bring TK units. TK units are the ones who cause the most damage to the enemy while they take not many casualties and even with 50% disablements, they are 100% combat ready in no time again.

EDIT: graphic upload is impossible due to the borked forum change at the moment. The Matrix forum works as good as WITP worked in the first two years...

One of the reasons I like to save the 4 large Aviation Rgt from the SRA ( 1 - Malaya, 2 - Dutch, 1 - Luzon) is China. They have no high load cost equipment, so they are easy to transport into China and then around the country as needed. I use them initially in other countries, but by this time in the game, I have enough of the other types and use them here.  Nice to be able to move 100 to 150 Aviation Support in one or two days.

Those artillery regiments are nearly worthless in attack, but are very useful during the deffence. I don´t know if they are as good as tank regiments, but if you fear you might be kicked out fom landing zone sometimes, those artillery regimnets can save your day.. Especially against shock attack!

yes, would be fine to have them available in China. Even though I do have enough aviation support in the two major bases I use (Chungking and Kweiyang) I don´t have a lot of aviation support in all the other bases. I lack flak in most bases. I didn´t plan to wage war in China and I could have never thought of Hortlund using all his airforce in China instead of defending the SRA... If he keeps up with this tactic then he will be in serious trouble in 6 months...

This is one of the reasons I´m thinking it was a huge mistake of Hortlund to bring back the war to China. The first sweep that reached an enemy base and the Thuds clear the skies over Kaifeng. The Oscar performed better than the Tojo which seems to be completely useless. Wonder if the reason for that is the low maneuver rating of 29 of the Tojo. Seems like the Tojo can only fly straight ahead. Most kills were achieved by the P-47, the Corsairs shot down "only" half a dozen enemy fighters. In the end we lose 8 P-47 (a weeks replacement, but it was surely worth it). Like mentioned before, even if Hortlund would be able to take ALL of China, it will take time and until the situation gets absolutely desperate I will have the possibility to strike back hard with my airforce and that is exactly what I will do. I guess the enemy pilot pools are empty by now and so all those fighter pilots will be replaced by pilots in the 30s! This makes it then even harder for him to defend the SRA but it seems he won´t fight anyway. If he takes all of China and gets all HI/oil/resources undamaged (which I highly doubt), then he would get as many as he will lose due to my bombing of his production centers. And I´m only bombing the ones that were Japanese in 12/41 already.

then the follow on airfield attack goes in... the Warhawks performed very well, taking down half a dozen fighters for no loss and we torch nearly two dozen aircraft on the ground. Not as many as I hoped but the enemy was out for a strike the same time we went in to attack the airfield. Still, todays air operations were a clear success...

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

ouch! The enemy has moved half a dozen units (all TK units, including a TK div) onto the street North West of Ichang. They entered yesterday when a Chinese corps on transit entered the hex also. Clear hex and my corps had no chance. Why a fully supplied corps, that was 100% combat ready, gets an adjusted assault value of 31 is a mistery for me. We lose 1/3 of the corps and 800 supply points...

a couple of really surprising things here. Thought we would have serious problems due to our bombers attacking the AA unit instead of the IJA division. But then our adjusted av looks very good, the Japanese adjusted av looks very, very, very good but still we achieve a 1:1. Surprising also that the forts weren´t at 9 and now are at 7. Our losses weren´t severe and I´m not sure if I have to bring in more troops as planned. Some 400 assault points are still waiting to be lifted in.

why I´m not surprised to see this paradrop? Only a base force defending but the BF has inf squads and in a wooden hex and with some forts, the enemy would never have a chance. I guess this paradrop was only ordered to stop supply production in the hex. Will have to dispatch a division to destroy those paras. Means no supplies here for two weeks.

I expected a strike against Ichang as this is the base my sweep was based. I didn´t expect such a huge strike (combined from to big airfields). The Tojos were eaten alive, our fighters achieved a kill rate of something like 10:1 but then the super Zeroes showed up achieving a kill rate of 15:1... Can you believe what results this game is coming up? But still, this is exactly what I want, an attrition battle. Only I can win this battle in the long run and airlosses don´t look that bad today. Hortlund has stripped his carriers of fighters, there are several fighter daitais from IJN CVs in China.
