I Know that forts have a huge impact on land assaults, but do they play a role in aerial attacks and naval bombardment?

Yes, they seem to help, more with Naval bombardment than aerial bombardment... neither effect is as marked as with land combat.

I guess what I really want to know is if it's worth it to build the forts up if LC is not imminent, but air/naval bombardment is.

Depends on how much you like your troops, i guess...

it generally takes a long time to build a fort... lots of factors go into any decision about building one, including
- supply status
- how likely you are to get hit
- how likely you are to have the enemy invade the base
- do you need the airfield and/or port expanded
- timing factors (how long do you have to build the fort)
etc. etc.

Looking through the manual (which I've heard is incomplete due to various patches) there isn't anything in Naval or Air that specifically says forts help vs air/naval attacks. Seems logical that it would help, I guess I was hoping for something more concrete. I agree with you that it seems to help, but how much is the question. If it doesn't have an impact, then maybe it should...

Well, lots o' die rolls involved, so hard to give hard and fast answers when i don't actually know what the code looks like... building the SIZE of the AF/Ports can also help according to some people (iirc) - but that doesn't aid in defending from LCUs.

Personally, at the beginning of the game for Allies, all my conatruction efforts tend to go for building forts for various reasons.

EDIT: Lots of stuff not in the manual, and a LOT of the stuff in the manual is wrong.

rtrapasso is very knowledgeable about the game. I have, however, read in other threads that forts in fact don't help with naval bombardment. Possibly they do, but not much, or possibly they help a lot. Yet, as far as I know, know one has posted definitively on that. Similarly I have read that they are very ineffective against air raids. My personal belief is that the game designers intended forts to be for land combat. I gave up on building forts against naval bombardment...perhaps that was unwise.

As to whether or not they should, I think that should depend a lot on the terrain. A lot of bombardments occur at places where naval bombardments couldn't reasonably reach. For instance, iirc the harbor at Noumea was rather well protected and would have been very difficult to shell effectively. Same for the air fields at Port Morseby.

It seems it would help lessen the "drive by nuke" effect of bombardment TF and make airfields less vulnerable. I see your point about terrain as a factor. Both Noumea and PM would be tough nuts to crack because of terrain and distance from the surf, IRL. Maybe in AE, guess we'll wait and see!
