All,

I am playing allies and it has come time to upgrade on my CV's. I am sending the Lex and Sara to their Upgrades in PH. My question is, should you transfer the air wing off at PH so they can train while the upgrades are going on? When the CV's leave the upgrade, do I just transfer them back on? Of course remembering which airwing goes to which CV. With this training, will their experience increase or does exp only increase in combat only?

Also, Whhile my CV TF are on station, there comes a time when they show "0" aircraft onboard, eventhough you know they are there. Does this mean they are out of ammo for the planes? The ships themselves have plenty of endurance because I keep a Rep TF with them.

I generally stand down CAG's when I upgrade my carriers. I also will usually send them to the West Coast because there are more repair yards there, so they will repair more quickly.

I have also noticed that occasionally they read as no AC on board. I seem to notice most often when I stand down all aircraft, during thunderstorms and such.

You may want to check out your # of sorties. They might be out of ordanance. But that should not happen unless they are seeing a fair amount of activity.

I always bring the carriers to San Fran if I can, and move all other damaged ships to other ports. Sometimes one finds himself wandering in the ocean of the southern cross in which case we sample the wares of Sydney. I leave the planes on the carrier. Refit doesn't take long.

Most carrier pilots have decent skill so if I were you I would not touch those airgroups, just stand em down or whatever while their Carrier refits.

Has anybody worked out which is quicker between a refit in PH or SF taking into acount transit times plus any system damage incurred during the transit?

I think it depends on your starting position. If you have a CV in perfect shape sitting in PH or Sydney, it would not pay off to send them to the west coast just for the upgrade. This makes more sense if your CV already has ca. 10 sys damage and needs R&R plus upgrade.

Didn't think a ship would get an upgrade refit unless its SYS damage was less than 5.  If a ship's due for refit I would get them out of Sydney unless you want them to sit there for a long time; Sydney's repair facilities are small enough that it will take a while to fix a large ship like a CV or BB.  I usually send nothing bigger than a cruiser to Sydney (or Auckland) for repairs.

A repair yard can half the repair time if it is large enough. Thus, even if the yards in Sydney/Melbourne are tiny, repairs will not take much longer than twice the time they would need in SF.

If the carriers operate in the south pacific area, it would take a lot of time to move them to SF and back. This movement requires escorts, which could be used for something else in the meantime if you repair on-site. Even with escorts, the journey is a bit dangerous - you can always meet a lucky sub or simply collect so much random sys damage on the way back that the whole journey was wasted.

I really don't like sending slightly damaged or upgrading ships back over huge distances. Look for a large port (size 8 or better), bring a fleet HQ and repair ships (don't forget to convert several AKs early) and then do the smaller repairs closer to the action. This has the additional benefit, that you can use the ships in non-perfect condition if there is an emergency. A ship with 11 damage 12 hexes away is sometimes a lot better than a ship with 1 damage 120 hexes away...

You really stand down all AC when the weather prediction says T-storms? Wow.. Why?

Actually I usually only do that for Carriers and rear area training bases. Also I will occasionally give my bombers a break to recover.

It seems to cuts down on the operational losses. I never stand down float/patrol planes though. If my carrier are in action, they most definately do not stand down.

I can't stand losing one of my men, and the pilots are named so it becomes personal when one is lost. Now if they go down fighting the good fight, I feel that at lest is was not in vain.

The question of Pearl vs. SF is confounded with what else is in port, especially since the USN seems to have a lot of "block" upgrades.  An empty Pearl is better than a jammed SF, but it's a much closer call if you've got a bunch of subs cluttering Pearl for refit after a patrol in the western Pacific versus a block upgrade of Liberty Ships clogging SFO.  In that sort of case make your choice and clear the chosen harbor of everything but carriers.

If I recall correctly, most of the US fleet carreirs convert in the summer of 1942.  Wasp has a smaller 30 plane fighter group and Lexington is still flying a 27 plane squadron in July of 1943.

Remember gang that repair yards have repair points and if the ship in question needing repairs passes some die rolls and wins, those repair points are used( double the durability of the ship I think) and instead of 1 point repaired you get 2.

Small Repair yards, like Diamond harbor or Melbourne can help crusiers and smaller ships this way but the big yards like Pearl and the West Coast are better for Carriers.

In a game against the AI I was running Wasp with the British carriers off Darwin when its refit came up in Oct 42. I sent it to Sydney with 5 sys damage. Its now 2 Dec and its fully operational. It wasn't the only ship in Sydney but it was a small refit , no more than 5 or 6 sys worth. Sending in all the way back to PH or further to the west coast didn't make much sense,

a. It would result in more Sys damage and
b. Even with a total of 10-15 damge its still available for use were its needed.

Its a judgement call, small I mostly do at local repair yards.
