Hello, in stock 15 pbem it is now 3 July 1942 and the Lexington CV-2 still has her 8" 55's. All the other CV"s have been hiding from KB in SD and SF, and all but the Lex have make their refit. Is she just having bad die rolls? I moved her to SF for more ship yard points but no refit. Should I stick her on a CA line of battle on Iron Bottom sound?
Also, on Submarine's how do you keep system damage to a minimum. It seems by the time they get to the patrol area they are already at 5-6 system damage, and in less than several weeks they are at 10-12. How long/how much system damage do you all keep them on patrol? How much system damage is OK before it affects their mission? At 12 systems damage it turns red, is that at a damage level where they can not submerge anymore?

Thanks in advance. John

In order for a refit, the vessel has to have a Sys Damage of less than 5 and be disbanded into a port that has a shipyard.

I do not know if a sub cannot submerge at a certain damage level.  I've never come across it and I would not think so.  I have never had subs with that much system damage getting to their patrol area.  Are you running your subs at flank speed?  Are they being continously spotted by aircraft?  Bad die rolls would be my guess otherwise.

also, the ship with its upgrade (say 4/42) will upgrade at one time in the month. not at the first day of the month.

So, if your ship sit with damage 0 in a level-10-harbour for more than one month, something is wrong.

Hello. So you should put the sub's on cruise speed until they get to the patrol area, then set them to mission speed? I have been leaving them on mission speed. What about the systems damage, how much is to much? 20 systems damage?
Is this the correct place to post these questions, or should this be posted in the War Room?

Thanks, John

I have been leaving them on mission speed.

I leave them on cruise speed in their patrol area, too. The TF's speed setting does NOT influence the chances for a (successful) attack, it's the sub's speed that matters. I only use full speed if I need subs to race to a destination.

Ships above 10 are easier to spot. Ideally, you don't want a sub with more than 9 sys damage on patrol - pratically, you may want them on station a little longer, depending on how many subs in good condition you have available.

Your choice.

The War Room was created for exactly these types of questions and discussions. Asking there keeps this general thread much less cluttered. Which helps if you are searching for an old post.

As far as the subs, I thought they couldn't submerge if at 50% systems damage or greater. Or possibly it was 50% flotation.

I usually send my subs back to port when their SYS damage gets to 15 or greater.  To hold down SYS damage while transiting to their patrol area, just do two things; keep them at Cruise speed and set up advance sub bases as close to the front line as possible, with AS & AR ships in there for repair and refit.  I keep subs with less than SYS 15 damage at the advance base for repair rather than send them back to major ports for repair.

Hello. Thanks for your time and the quick reply's! One last sub question on this thread and I will stop bugging you all, and post in the War Room. I send a sub right out of dry dock with fresh paint and a full load of torp's to the patrol area. Instead of shooting off their torp's they surface and get into a deck gun fistfight with an AP/AK and wind up with 6-10 systems damage, and have to send them right back to dry dock again. Is there a button that I am missing that instructs the sub to just use it's torp's and not the deck gun?

Thanks, John.

I really like the sub op's in this game. It's like a mini game with in WITP. Sorry for all the questions, but I would like to get very good at Sub Op's.

No such button. A more aggressive skipper will often fight his sub on the surface in order to make use of his (usually) reliable deck gun - especially if he's skippering a US fleet boat with the horrible Mk14 torpedoes!
