There is a game, which came out back in the 1980's called Vga Planets which was and still is a very good strategy game. (also mentioned once on the forum: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1658015&mpage=1&key=vga%2Cplanet .
A space game where up to 11 players with 11 different races will take part to play the game (end goals are chosen before the game begins). I do suggest that some of you at least give it a try, but you can check out one such host at http://www.rcworld.de/, Summer break period for this year is set like the following, July-23rd to Aug-6th. You can still look over the site to see what games are being played, etc...

For those who already play this game(and for the new and adventures soles), there is one very good site to use for explaining the game and strategies: http://www.xs4all.nl/~donovan/. Also, if you want a much improved game, you might want to look at: http://phost.de/.

The first Vga Planets game was in DOS, but Tim Wisseman lost it all from a virus and then he wrote the Windows version from scratch (no backups of the earlier version).

Tim Wisseman's main site is: http://www.vgaplanets.com/ , where both version 3 and 4 can be found, "but" 3 is the original game that I have spoken of here and version 4 is something totally different.

You can get a free shareware Windows version at: http://www.vgaplanets.com/index.htm "Winplan Shareware".

Shareware Version 3 will allow you to play the game, but you will be limited to level 6, which will be enough to play the game, though not picking up all of the advanced features possible. This game allows anybody to "host" the game and there are several utilities which will help in playing this game, so I would suggest you pick up at: http://www.nefo.med.uni-muenchen.de/~echoview/ "ev1224bv32.zip".

Bottom line here is a great strategy game which is played by a lot of people from newbies on up and you should find this game to fit right in with the best of games.

The download is only a few meg and should you decide to buy this game, you are emailed the code and that's about it. I have talked to Tim a few times over the years and he's always been there to help out, so go give it a try..

I thought that game is already dead. Interesting to see it isn't. Has anyone done Windows version yet? And is there any reason to play any version of VGA Planets over Stars! ?

Yes, there are VGA Planets releases for Windows, the one I have is VGA Planets 3.5 for Windows (I bought that early-mid 90s).  Great game imho.

I updated my original post..

Stars was written soon after Vga Planets, so I suppose you could call it a clone. I played Stars years ago, but liked Vgap much more. Depends I guess from personal pref.
