How does this work? Do you need a boat? Traps?

I think you can "crab" from either a boat or a beach. When I was in Houston it was not uncommon to see people walking out into the water to check the crab traps.

How do you kill them? The mere thought of picking up such a critter makes me shiver. I have no problems eating them, though.

I never left shore. I'm sure I crabbed in <10 ft of water too. There's a couple of types of traps. What I used had a door on each end that opened when it hit the bottom. Tie some smelly bait in the middle (I used either rotton chicken or bunker (a type of fish)) and you're all set. I would let them sit for about 5 minutes and then yank them up and see what I got.

The other type of trap looks like a big safety pin attached to a line. Pin some bait (I usually use squid for these) on it. I didn't use any of these this time. Drop them straight down and wait for the line to start moving. Then you know something has grabbed the bait and thinks it got the muther load. Slowly pull the bait up to the surface. When it's close enough to see what grabbed it (crabs are reluctant to let go once they found something) grab it with a net.

They die real quick when you drop them in boiling water. My wife made me tell her when I was going to do it. She'd leave the house.

Crabbing is great fun and inexpensive too.  I spend less than $5 (about 3 Euros for you European types ) for the bait.  The large crabs sold for $2-3 each at stores and the smaller ones were about $1 each.

This reminds me...

When I was about 11 my family spent a summer in an appartement in a rural part of Germany with many lakes. The area was famous for its eels. So one day my mother sent my sister to the local fishmonger to by some eels. This she did. In a plastic bag. With water. Alive...

At first we tried to slit their throats. The problem was: where exactly is the throat of an eel?! Actually the problem was that they kept freeing themselves even from a tight grip! Anyway, the cuts we managed to make had no effects. Next idea: lets break their necks by hitting their heads against the curb of a table... Where exactly is the neck of an eel? By now, the entire kitchen floor was wet, slimy and bloody (eel blood, so far). Finally my mother decided that throwing them into boiling water should take care of them. It did. She made a fine meal out of them. Nobody ate a bit!

The next day we went to the fishmonger and asked how we were supposed to kill these monsters?! The clerk, totally surprised, answered: just put a little salt in their water...

That's very interesting. Not sure I'd really like to try eel though.

My mother-in-law says that you need to keep them alive until you are ready to eat them. She's spent her entire life on the coast so I'll just do what she says. No one got sick so I guess she was right.

So crabs are OK, but not eel?

I'm willing to eat anything, as long as it is neatly arranged on a plate and evidently dead.

In Hamburg I had something called Aalsuppe. My German wasn't that great so I decided from the ingredients (that I could translate) that it was all soup, a little bit of everything. Well the soup was incredible so I asked my newly met table mates how to make it. The first ingredient was eel or Aal. Since then I've tried all sorts of eel dishes, almost without exception they have been good.

I'm kind of with your wife on that one. I had friends that boiled lobsters and hated the sound of them hitting the water. I also don't care much for eating them from their shell either.

Odd since when I fished as a boy I had no trouble cleaning a fish and frying it up.

Well if I had any thought of it before this story sure took care of that.

I pretty much have to go one step further. I prefer that it not really like a formerly living creature. I don't want to see eyes, limbs, claws, scales, shells and even sometimes no bones.

Fish is fine as long as its not smelt. In 4H I took part in a smelt run. After catching a hundred or so we fried them up and we gorged ourselves till we felt sick, since then I can't stand the things unless they are smoked or candied.

gorging is a good way to develop a food aversion.

I find I'm pickier now too. At field training I ate ants, grasshoppers and a squirrel. Not much chance I'd do that now.

Fishing lost it's appeal to me when I turned 14 and discovered girls are more interesting than fishing.

I don't like that fishy smell, either. Had to caution Esmeralda about it awhile back...

Same here, but now that I'm almost 60, the process seems to be slowly reversing itself.

I've had eel on numerous occasions in sushi bars. It's quite tasty, though it does have a strong flavor.

As I get older I get less picky...eyes, limbs and bones are a good start.

However, if she were a sugar-mama I might negotiate.
