Just noted in a battle that went probe vs withdraw the text was (As I recall):

Battle Over !
Versus Outflank/Probe withdraw automatic

I hope that is just a mistake in this text.
According to manual withdraw vs outflank is NOT automatic.
It just add +1 to strategic rating of withdrawing leader. Same as echelon.

- or is this a rules deviation ?

I'll take a look but I suspect this was a typo. Probe vs Withdraw is auto BUT that should be the only case.

If the outflank fails to come in before the second round the withdraw is also automatic. (not in the first round however)

Ken is correct.  A little known sideline on both the EiA and EiANW combat tables.

If the attacker chooses outflank, and the defender chooses withdraw, and the attacker's first outflank roll fails, then the withdraw happens after the end of the first round of combat and no second (or third) round of combat is fought.
