Mix of fantasy and hardboiled detective novels. They center around Harry Dresden, a wizard and private investigator in modern-day Chicago. Magic is real, along with all sorts of monsters and problems for Harry. I found an audiobook copy of the first novel, read by James Marsters (of Buffy/Angel/Torchwood fame), and it's great fun.

Hmmm, Bernie Mac just died.

I was just reading yesterday that he seemed to be recovering from pneumonia.

Sounds pretty good T. I thurst for a really good, imaginative, well written novel. Everything I've seen lately is junk....pure junk.

Whats sarcoidosis?

Bernie Mac was great, I remember watching him on The Orginal Kings of Comedy.

Bloody shame that he is gone. Only 50 too. Makes you wonder....

Welcome, Bakerman.

My wife works some odd schedules, too.  She's working tomorrow, so we had a good family day today.

Have you ever read any Orson Scott Card, NG? He's famous for his "Ender" series of books, the first of which, "Ender's Game", is fantastic. Another one of his is a book I tend to read annually, "Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Colombus". I love that book!

Another of my favorite summertime authors is Paul Erdman. He has written several novels that are best described as financial thrillers. They are light reading, and quite entertaining if you have any interest in finance at all. I read 4 of them on my recent trip to the Turks.

She does. She works 24 over the weekend and gets paid for 36. She is filling in for a tech that had surgery but it sure makes it hard on the home life. I work 11 hour days monday through friday and we only get the mornings together plus add in 3 kids from 8 down to 5 it makes it tough.

Orson Scott Card is a great sci-fi writer. The short story version of Ender's Game that appeared in There Will Be War was incredible short fiction. Other Sci-fi writers that I like are David Brin and Frank Herbert. Mote in Gods Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle is also terrific.

The follow on novels to Mote in Gods Eye by Larry and Jerry are also great. In fact, I have not read a book by either that I thought was a waste of my money. The Enders Game series is also very good with some interesting twists and turns. I used to travel a lot and those books help fill the hours in hotels, motels and airports.

Funny you mention O. Scott Card. Enders Game is one of my all time favorite books and Enders Shadow was very good. I'm reading another in that series right now, but it's not doing a lot for me.

I have heard of Erdman, maybe I'll give him a try. Over the last few years the Sci-fi/Fantasy genre has left me cold...I used to love it. I tried, but could never get into the horror/thriller genre, or the spy novels. Stuff like the De Vinci Code is like cotton candy to me, it makes me ill just to look at it.

I have read some historical fiction lately that's not bad. I in particular like 18th and 19th century stuff. Anyone have any author recommendations there?

The Patrick O'Brian novels are excellent. Set in the Napoleonic age they follow the careers of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, usually sailing on the HMS Surprise. The books are written in period language, which takes awhile and a good dictionary to get used to, but are rewarding yarns.

Horatio Hornblower books are good but are a bit to formulaic for me. Sort of like Horatio Alger stories.

Moby Dick is a terrific novel on many levels, again the prose can be difficult for some.

The Killer Angels and Gods and Generals are both worth reading.

The Sharpe's series (Sharpe's Rifles Etc...) are also a fun read even if they seem to be able to load their Napoleonic rifles as quickly as bolt actions .

There are probably more but its late
