A couple of things to add to what Elf said: 1. Those obsolete aircraft are great for the training units: Nate and Claude for the IJAAF and IJNAF respectively at the beginning of the war. 2. I just look at pilot experience and keep them on training in Japan until the pilot with the lowest experience is 40. Then I send them to a location where they are (relatively) safe from Allied LRCAP and have them bomb enemy ground units. I keep this up to get them to my target average experience. Early in the war it is 80, but drops off as the war continues and my losses mount. I call it a unit in training. Early on, you'll take op losses, due to the horrible experience. (That's why they use obsolete aircraft.) You don't want to waste a frontline airframe on fodder. As you take op losses, add aircraft and pilots. Just make sure you don't add the odd trained replacement you get. Give them the fodder. You'll need the trained replacement for another purpose. 3. When the unit reaches it's target experience level, it becomes a trained replacement. At this point, keep it in training until you need to replace losses in frontline units. At this time, break it down into chutai and upgrade the chutai to they type of aircraft of the frontline unit they are going to reinforce. Once they have repaired, fly the reinforcement chutai to the frontline unit (Mohammed goes to the mountain) and disband the reinforcement chutai into the frontline unit. 4. At this point, make sure you click the button to have the reinforcement unit come back in 90 days. 5. When a reinforcement unit comes back in 90 days, convert it to an obsolete airframe and fill it with aircraft. Then add 1 less than the max # of fodder pilots. When you get a trained pilot in the pool, add him. Pilots tend to train more quickly if there's someone who can actually fly in the unit. Make sure to combine the chutai of a unit together when they all arrive back on the map. There's a limit as to the number of sentai/daitai that can breakdown. 6. This way, if you work it out properly, you'll have 3 groups of units; frontline, trained and those in training on the map. The idea is to keep your frontline units supplied with trained pilots for as long as possible. Note that, unless your Allied opponent is able to attrit your pilots quickly, your average pilot experience in the frontline will remain high. 7. Note that this will not work in AE.
