Just recently i got back into playing CS, i hadn't played since it was a TS title, and i have to say i'm loving every minute so far. One of the things i'd forgotten was how good the music was, but being some what a modslut i've started to add more period pieces of music but i have a question.

The background sound files for music come in three types abackg, nbackg and xbackg. Am i correct in saying they are, in the same order, Allied, Neutral and Axis?

Also in EF for instance there are only three Allied files abackg0-abackg2, if i wanted more Russian only music could i add more files, for instance abackg3 and so on? Or would the game not know to look for them or even worse make it crash?

Thx in advance for any help.

Not sure, but might be worth experimenting to see what happens!

I believe those associations are the 4th line down in SOUNDS.dat 3 6 8 17, 3 is the abackg.ogg, 6 is the xbackg.ogg, 8 is backg, and 17 is nbackg.ogg. If you change the numbers here, it should let you add more!

Not sure of those other lines down from that though, you also have assault.ogg files, (8), which don't make sense since the only 8 is the one in the above line for background, so maybe more assault sounds were added, and the sounds.dat not updated, wherein the 2 extras won't cycle then?

I haven't played much with the sounds file other than the first two lines for weapons/movement, so some tinkering would be in order, oh, and no Barker, you don't have to encrypt it!!!

Sorry, couldn't help myself...

Mike

I have added new music to my Sandinista mod (addtional tracks) by editing the sound.dat file, just as you would adding new weapons or movement sounds. Don't know what the upper limit is and you have to dope out which line to edit by counting sound files of a type, which is a problem if there are two lines with 3, for instance. Anyway, something like that. I once added the entire soundtrack to "The Battle of the Bulge" to West Front, which was pretty cool but, kids, don't try that at home, unless daddy owns the copyright to that music!

Woot....it worked.

I've only done the USSR so far for EF but it seems to work a treat, my biggest problem was finding a good program for changing .wav and mp3's into .ogg files.

Now to start converting all those big band and German military tunes i have hidden away somewhere. And of course the search for some good Japanese music for RS.

Thanks again for the help.

I always thought the introductory music for RS was an excellent choice.  If I recall correctly, the introductory music for Divided Ground was excellent too.  Both immediately put you into a theater of war.

I thought the WF introductory music was good, and the EF introductory music was my least favorite.  Neither one necessarily pulled you into a theater of war like RS and DG.

Nothing beats playing an EF Berlin scenario whilst listening to Ride of the Valkryies.
