Sign me up for either NATO or the U.S. if you have an open slot.

Happy to try either.

Ill sign u up as NATO. Ive played against you and if someone can handle NATO its you. Ill Put Mavn as USA and play China myself.

So, to recap

European NATO - Grumpymel
USA & Minor allies - Mavn
USSR & Minor allies - Herode2
China - Grymme.

Ill uppload latest scenariofile tomorrow around 7pm Swedish time. Remember that this is a playtest scenario but i dont think there are any gamebreaking bugs. I have added around 20 events that are actioncard driven. (there is a bug in the NATO fortificationevent, that i havent solved. But the event works and you can just click through it).

I would very much appreciate feedback on both balancing, bugs (if any), playabilitiy and feeling

I have just uploaded current scenario and graphics files.

So the scenario can begin. FOW should be on and password. The turn order is NATO, USSR, CHINA and USA. So i suggest Grumpymel starts the game and sends on to MAVN.

GrympyMel emailed me today. he will most likely start the scenario tonight, possibly tomorrow.

I uploaded new version of scenario to scenariobanks. Because there was this delay with starting we might as well play with modern SFTpics.

I tried to load the file but I have error messages like "unable to find the file C:/Matrix games/Advanced Tactics/bin/graphics/waw/b17.jpg" (and some more jpgs).
I suppose the game needs to have some of the lastest WAW version installed ? It would be a good idea to mention it in the "readme" on the community site.

I'm going to download the latest release of WAW & I hope to play the Varsaw Pact's turn this evening.

Aah... ill fix this.

It could be like that. I used the WAW-scenario map when i started making the scenario so its difficult for me to see if there is such errors. Have you downloaded the latest version of the scenario?

In any case you can just click through such picture errors, its playable anyway, but of course its more fun with the correct pics.

Yep, it's not critical at all, I mentionned it just for the debug

I noticed some typos is the briefing :
- After an incident involving the death of some soviet military advicors...
- These are Paris, London, Leninggrad...
- Stealth bombers function as an allrund (???) tactical...

About starting positions :
- Windhoek (48,66) produces some suppley & PP but isn't affected to any HQ
- the 228th corps in Berbera (85,63) is affected to an ennemy HQ (Ethiopia & Sudanese HQ in Mombasa (81,65). Should be affected to Ethiopia HQ in Addis Abeba (84,65)
- and yes, it's Addis Abeba (or Ababa), not Adeba

The informational non-propagandist AAR :
As everyone expected it after the alarming news we received the last hours, the Fascist Forces of USA and their NATO minions dared to attack our Freedom Soldiers in several places all around the world. This would deserve a radical and nuclear punishment but as we are deeply concerned with ecological matters and the Carbon/Uranium signature of all our actions, we unilaterately decided that the Free Soviet People will only exterminate Fascists with their bare hands (and some nice guns we fortunately put in just before the agression).
We call for conscription in all our cities and, while our elite soldiers are reaching the front line to resist the hideous assault, our slav... free workers from all our gula... work groups and holiday camps will be mobilized to ensure the needed supply, vodka and so on.
So it will be. Hugh.

And now, pure apolitical facts :
US 90 & 91st corps are being surrounded in Mogadiscio.
The Afghan Corps is opening the way to Kabul. Resistance from Mudjahedthings is futile.
The former so-called Mannerheim line is collapsing. Finnish citizens acclaim our troops along the beautiful path of the Karelian forests.
Berlin is free again.
Vodka is good for your teeth.

1st USRR turn played & sent to Mavn.

No probs Herode2. Ill make the changes. Generally i welcome constructive feedback.

Some thougths for you and the other players to think about.

- Production costs. Maybe lower price of trucks, halftrucks again? Mechanization more common in 1980s.
- Overall strenght ratio natio vs USSR. balance.
- Is the initial strenght high/low or enough for each sides production. Will both sides "die" and leave empty battlefields.
- Possible fun events for NATO.
- Any units that could be renamed to make them more historical.
- Air ranges ok?
- Ground ranges to long?
- Should Helicopters & Anti air infantry be in. Or some other units?
- Is mujaheddins units to underpriced?

I am playing China, so you should send the turn to me instead of MAVN.

BTW. You should watch out in Afghanistan. US has possibility to place mujaheddin corps that ave underpriced (even in your territory). They are very strong for their price. But consist only of infantry so there is prob no risk they will invade USSR.

So far the battle in Europe seems even. As far as i can tell.

The Great Democratic Republic of China feels the weight of ideology and comes to the aid of their Soviet little brother. An air sortie is launched against revisionist arch enemy of Taiwan where the 7th US fleet is located. Will this be a new Pearl Harbour?

- Alas the imperialist swines are more prepared this time. The Republic scores only a small tactical victory with 4 planes destroyed to 3 lost.
- The burmese and thai people rise up against their opressors. Maoist guerillas succesfully deployed there (50 % chance). This card is broken however since i can play it more than one time and its underpriced. But i wont. Partisans are no good anyway.
- Other than that China starts the war quietly, building up for more intense war when whe can force North Korea into the conflict.

BTW does anyone have MAVN:s email?

Hi MavnB

No problems. Did you fix the picture error? I think it fixed itself for the others after downloading last version from scenariobank (and possibly downloading latest version of WAW).

You can look around the map to see which countries you control. From the start i think USA controls. Canada, Panama, Portugal, The netherlands, Island, Greek Cuprys, a base in Britain. Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Diego Garcia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, South Corea, Japan.

At turn 2 Israel joins the USA. The USA doesnt have options to get more minors to join them. Their special actioncards alow them to deploy Stealth bombers and Mujaheddin.

You should look out for the following though. China has the option of attacking Burma, which makes them join USA. Also they can attack Pacific countries which makes them join NATO. On turn 2 the arab countries join USSR. On turn 3 North corea joins China which opens up a land front there. These events should come with messages.

You should also try to help NATO as they might have a hard time in Europe.

Good luck.

Turn sent

Some notes about the few I can tell on balance. To say it short : I confirm GrumpyMel's stats. I confess I expected more power for Varsaw Pact. Presently, with NATO attacking at turn 1 and gaining the initiative, Soviets endure heavy losses & I don't see how I could do anything else but defense. Due to the local numeric advantage of NATO after his turn 1, Budapest and Prague will be very difficult - to say the least - to defend and to keep. Not mentionning the special operations destroying bridges and breaking soviets lines on the rear... Also note that initial Artillerie range 1 makes it almots useless in defense, as it will be destroyed if forced to retreat, which is likely to happen.

If this is the expected balance, that's OK for me. But after your comments, I thought you expected more offensive posture from Varsaw Pact and some difficulties for NATO. We'll see how things go on next turns but I expect the exact opposite on the beginning of the game : offensive for NATO and hard times for Soviets (except on the Finnish front, BTW).

Herode2: Good points. Actually i dont really know whats the best way to handle the scenario. I also was thinking that the Warsaw Pact would have power to act more agressivly (most fictional WWIII scenarios does this). I did try to design the forces in that way (at least a little). The problem is that i couldnt really let the USSR start since it would then be the opposite around (USSR would kill of NATO).

I agree and thought the casualty list was really high for the first turn for the warsaw pact. On the other hand i think that the pure strenght balance (i think you lost some 300 INF on T1) still favoured USSR. I dont have the figures here (i am at work) but i think its something like 4500 USSR INF against 2500 NATO inf. But it may not be the same with armour and some 'USSR forces are tied up on other fronts.

Possibly USSR needs a little boost. I still think that you should be ok over the long run since USSR really outproduces NATO.

About the artillery. Hmm.. i basicly used the stats from WAW. Are you thinking 2 range for normal art and 3 for long range.  i am open to suggestions.

My most important goal with the scenario is that neither side should wint within 10 turns of the game. That would basicly kill it.

I have made a little changes on the scenario since our game adding more production to replace the high losses. This doesnt really change the aggression balance though.

So i am completely open to changing the force strenghts. I think that the ideal would be that USSR are a little agressive initially capturing Berling and meeting up with the US in netherlands. And then it would be an even battle from there.  Its not very many hexes to play with thóugh.
