You will have to have two identical ATI cards for that (but those are not expensive) - what you might need more is VERY STRONG Power Supply Unit!

I have a 1000W PSU en route As the Boy Scouts say "Be prepared"

Ahh yes... I remember... in your original list... it is good to be prepared...

BTW, you will not chnage you other parts in PC? Do you have good/reliable/fast HDD(s)?

I have a fairly new (6 month old) HDD after my old one died and a DVD writer after my old DVD drive stopped reading DVDs. I also have spiffy new monitor that I got just before my trip So I'm reusing the newer parts, the older parts can be recycled or sold on to partly fund my new build. If I get a cheap HDD and DVD drive and stick them in the old case then I have an entire system ready to go

In other news, I just had a tumour removed! Went to my doctor to have him look at a mole on my back, and he says, "That's a small benign skin tumour. Should I remove it?"

"Yes please"...

I hope that your doctor put your removed tissue for analysis - only under microscope they can for sure know if something is benign or malign...

Best wishes "T"!!!

I'm not too worried about it (it was slightly smaller than the nail on my little finger), but I'll obviously be mindful. I know exactly how sneaky cancer is.

In other news.  I have heard that the Vulcan is currently sat in base hanger.  If I get time, there may be a sneaky excursion at the weekend to geek it up and get some photos of the tin triangle.   Less chance of running into someone who wants to know what I'm doing there when I'm obviously not at work

Is it in flyable condition (are there any Vulcans in flyable condition)?

As long as we are talking computers , maybe some of you more knowledgable guys (that would be just about anyone) can tell me if a pipe dream of mine is doable. Is it realistic to have a computer built with the intention of being totally upgradable? By that I mean , never replaced , but constantly upgraded to stae of the art standards? I'm sick of filling up landfills with my computers and they are becoming very difficult to dispose of.

Yep. It's the only flying one in the world. I wish I'd been here when it landed. They were almost out of service when I was born, just a few months of 'official' service life left.

Unfortunately NO...

The thing is that components constantly evolve and you need to keep on changing stuff when times comes for changing it!

One thing you can do is to decide:

#1
Upgrade existing Pc with new parts (if possible) and do cost/benefit analysis

#2
Buy new PC

Most people choose option #2 but I like to do #1 (I usually sell my older parts to my friends and try to have very high end on my side whener posible and rational)...

Leo "Apollo11"

P.S.
I estimate that I had more than 20 different PC configurations in past 15 years but I had just 2 cases (though power supply units changed) and I still have my keyboard from 1988 (it is almost 2 kg = 4 lb heavy Cherry with perfect mechanical keys)!

Now I do feel old. As a kid (early sixties) I saw one perform at Pease AFB for an open house. The same show I saw a B-58 Hustler,a KB-50 (tanker version of a B-29) , Lots of "century seires" fighters, a Kamman Huskie (that put on a tremendous firefighting display) and a lot of other airplanes now in the museum or boneyard.

During the Falklands war I did see a curious sight at NAS South Weymouth (a now defunct reserve training base). One day out on the runway I spotted a oddly painted AV-8, much darker than the usual USMC. As it took off , it passed closer , and I'm sure it was in Royal Navy colors. It then proceeded to "tangle" with a couple of Marine Reserve A-4M's that were stationed there. This is about the same time as the RN task force was making it's trip down to the Falklands. I've never seen anything in print about it, and I couldn't get any information at the time, and in fact was told "don't ask too many questions, Kid!" , by a senior Chief Air Controller. Since the Argentine Navy flew A-4M's , I have always assumed that the fleet air pilots were trying to get a little "sparring practice " in. Any body ever hear anything about this?

*sigh*. Thanks Leo. As Kermit says , "It's not easy being green". Plus it's the cheap New England Yankee in me that really hates to throw anything out. I guess that I need to educate myself, and start trying to build my own computer so that I can re-cycle as many parts as possible.

I don't know about that. IIRC almost the RNs entire inventory of SHARs was on board the TF which went straight to Ascension. It could maybe have been a FAA SHAR, but I wouldn't bet on it.

RN SHARs were a blue/grey colour at the time of the Falklands, although the white areas of the roundels (and tail insignia if any) were painted out.

The TFs route took it down past Gibraltar and Africa I believe, and they were tracked by Soviet 'Bears' flying from Angola.

IIRC the French also trained the British fleet on the way to Falklands - they showed them the flight envelope of the Super Etendard that carried the Exocet missiles (i.e. French navy flew test runs against Brtitish fleet)!

"Yes please" , indeed! Fantastic news that they caught it early. I'm sure they are already planning it, but follow up with the biopsy to ensure you get the results.

That looked very much like what I saw. No roundels (that I could see , but I was still quite a ways away) , definately no red triangle on the tail. I recall thinking "that AV-8 has a sharp nose". Thinking about it , it very much resembled the Seaharrier. One point though , I recall the aircraft being a slightly darker shade of blue.

I don't know TBH. The SHARs with the fleet had low visibility markings applied on their way south. The red on the fin would have been removed as well. IIRC the roundels had the white overpainted with blue instead, I believe the red centre stayed the same.

Well, back from today's second medical excursion, the yearly eye check-up. My eye doctor was very pleased with what she saw, so if the good trend continues next year, then I'll be able to cut down to going once every two years. Yay!

*sigh*. Thanks Leo. As Kermit says , "It's not easy being green". Plus it's the cheap New England Yankee in me that really hates to throw anything out. I guess that I need to educate myself, and start trying to build my own computer so that I can re-cycle as many parts as possible.

Yep...that's what I do. There are a lot of good sites out there that will give you a good idea of the capabilities of different parts compare. I like www.tomshardware.com and www.phoronix.com.

I'd suspect that most people can easily get away with upgrading motherboard/cpu/memory every couple years and the other parts less frequently.

It's a very good idea to get a nice little NAS box you can use for primary storage of your important stuff. Then your desktop HD is just for OS and junk stuff. No worries if that croaks.
