I have seen my Dakotas bombing cities. I figure they were throwing trash out of the cargo door. They never hit anything. They did take losses from AA.

I recall a report from a convoy where Martlets (Wildcats in Royal Navy colours) attacked German submarines.
They had no bombs, and the MGs couldn't penetrate the hull, but the German sub commanders didn't know that, and hence dived. Sometime, an apparent threat is enough..

My guess is the guys on the wet-bridge don't bother to spend more than a few seconds on aircraft recognition.  If you're a U-boat in the middle of the North Atlantic, if it's a plane, it's probably not your friend, and it's best just assume that it's going to try to kill you.

Many times in WWII in Atlanic the out of ammo Allied patrol aircraft did "dummy" runs vs. German submarines - the submarine crews, of course, didn't know if those patroling aircraft were armed or out of ammo and had to dive in any case - this disruption also played a big role...
