These signs look like something from an old book. "That will be 1 pound, 3 shillings and 4 pence, please sir" "What? For one Green? Why that's wartime profiteering!" "Well, we're all digging for victory sir...blah blah...Dunkirk spirit...blah blah...up the apples and pears and gather 'round the old Joanna..." etc Or is it 2 rods, 3 chains and a fathom to the Secret Bunker? Only joking chaps. I read somewhere that the retention of these traditional, mile-based signs is some kind of bulwark against creeping Euro-domination. I love that stuff, especially when furiously delivered by some ruddy-complexioned, upper-class twit in tweed. It also reminds me of Jim Hacker's Euro-sausage speech from Yes Minister. It was one of the occasions where he got all Churchillian and actually garnered public support, although that inevitably would have caused some diplomatic spat that required a humiliating backdown. Well, bugger me. I found it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIYP1ibYdZI&feature=related Cheers, Neilster
