I 'm a newbie asking for help. I captured the canal and want to get the airfield up and running. I don't see a simble for a air field on the base hex but in the Base info screen it shows airfield capacity 1 (4).... How do I expand the airfield and how do I get aircraft onto the base?

I am thanking all you guys in advance I know you will come through for me.
Thanks

You won't see the symbol until aircraft are present...

Just turn on construction for the airfield and any engineers present will start building. They will repair before they expand the airfield though.

Your base units have engineers but if you want timely build up, send an engineer unit in there.

Upgrading your facilities does cost supply so keep the supply level up.

Rogue is right, but just a clarification. The planes on the airfield must be "operational". If all you have on the base is damaged planes, you still will not see the airfield symbol.

And you must have enganeers who support aircraft. The name is suppost to tell you that they are aircraft enganeers, but to be certain, run you mouse over the unit to get the black box that tells you exactly what they support. not all enganeers are created equal. Seabees build the airfield, but don't get aircraft airborne...

Your aircraft support units are named ### IJNAF Base Force, IJN Base Force, IJA Base Force and similarly. They have aircraft support squads, plus some have some engineers. You also have some aviation regiments/units and "special base forces" that are for the larger airfields.

Your construction engineers are usually labeled "construction battalion" or "naval construction" or "road construction". They will all provide a bunch of construction engineers (called just "engineers" on the unit details screen). There are also "combat engineers". These will not help, and are mostly found in units labeled "Eng" and in combat infantry divisions.

Thanks for the advice. I have moved the 107th &109th USN base force on to the island and in the process
of moving two squadrons of SBD's and two squadrons of F4F's.
I hope to have the Cactus Airforce up and running soon

Before you move those SBD's in, bear in mind that your current airfield capacity (1(4)) won't permit you to carry out offensive air missions, including port, airfield and (most importantly) naval attack.  Your Grummans can be used to give you CAP over the field - and you'll probably need it - but until the airfield capacity is expanded to 2 any SBD's present can only carry out search and ASW missions.

My airfield is only at 1 and I have 2 sduadrons of SBD's but there is a lot of jap sub activity in the slot so maybe they won't
get to sit on the asses while there is fighting to be done.

Thanks a Bunch
