What was your biggest Commander blunder? I'll start by sharing mine --

I was playing a live opponent via email, I was Allies. Minor Axis advantage. I had lost the UK to Operation Sea Lion (story of that is another posting), but had fought off the Axis attempt to take Canada.

The U.S. and Russia had entered the war, the Axis invaded Russia pretty late, like fall 1941, due to the Sea Lion activities. So I'm defending Russia, and have a ton of production points to spend.

So, rather than conduct a conventional defense, I create a huge tank army, Zhukov as commander, extra air support in the form of 2 new Tac bombers, and send them all in an amphibious operation across the Black Sea to the Romanian coast.

The genius plan was to surprise the Axis in a theater far from the main front, capture Bucharest quickly, and devastate his southern line by removing the Romanians from the war. I would then press on to Bulgaria, which he would be unable to reinforce by rail since he had never captured Greece, removing the Bulgarians from the war. From there it would be easy work to move up to Hungary, Vienna, and then Berlin.

Instead, my opponent was able to blunt my assault easily by reinforcing Bucharest with a few German corps. The mountains outside of Bucharest made it difficult for my tanks to move because of supply issues caused by the low level of amphibious supply, and my massive force was easily chewed up.

After liquidating the invasion force, my opponent captured Moscow and marched on to Perm in a cakewalk.

There. I said it.

Admiral,

Sounds like you and I should play together! I've had quite a few blunders myself, more than I'd like to admit. My best (or worst, rather) featured an ill-advised attempt by the Leningrad corps to cut off a thrust by Army Group North. As might be expected, the Wehrmacht marched right in and immediately renamed the city to Hitlergrad. I also continue to fight an unfortunate tendency to overextend my advances, which probably has contributed to my miserable record at amphibious operations (I think I'm a collective 1 for 25 on those)...

I have to set this response up by saying that in previous games against other opponents, I had been aggressive with France early, invading Germany through the Maginot Line. In one instance, I even captured the Ruhr and held it for a few turns.

So I did the same thing in this one fateful game, but my opponent railed half his army to face me. I retreated to the Maginot Line, but my opponent was able to destroy one of the fort hexes and punch through. At the same time, he wheeled the rest of his army northward through Belgium and hit me on two fronts. France fell in January 1940, I think. He went on to conquer England and invade Russia in April 1941, capturing Moscow before winter hit. I'll never be aggresive with the French again. This is a classic example of a strategy working against newbies but getting crushed by an experienced wargamer. I'm itching for a rematch.

Playing as the Axis w/slight advantage, and then w/hubris, attempting to beat my friend w/"Oil" option on. Commies were at the gates of Berlin afore Winter '42. I'm holding out, though. He is going around my right flank and it won't be long! :-) Anybody w/some spare "Wonder Weapons?"

Bearcat,

How did you end up with russians in berlin by 1942 with an Axis advantage? I'd like to hear that story.

Oh, I have a good one ...

In my early Comannder days I didn't reallize that the Russian player could invest in research before Russia actually entered the war. So, months and months went by with no Russian R&D progress until Barbarossa started in mid-1941. I lost that game.....
