Russian turn 17.

Germany has the initiative in the north and south while it looks like a draw
in the center. Not good for me. I really have to be careful with my center planes
which are my only arm of the service i can use to hit the germans and which same
time is a effective protection for my own ground troops against the Luftwaffe.

Production:

Turn 18, May 28, 1942

This turn, the Russian will to attack seems to have subsided a bit. Losses were moderate and production finally manages to make good the infantry losses of the early Spring offensive.

The distribution:

AG North receives 8 Fighters, 3 Artillery and around 60 Rifle.
OKW receives 15 Engineers.
AG South receives 90 Rifle.
AG Romania receives 60 Rifle, 8 MG and 1 Artillery.

In the Ukraine, the Stalingrad Front has moved its forces into close contact with mine, which opens up possibilities. Supported by air and artillery, troops from AG South punch into their Northern flank.

On the northern edge of AG South's front, I deploy the full force of the reinforced Luftwaffe with devastating effects. The German High Command later refers to this battle as "Death of a Shock Army". The Russians are not decisively defeated, but their offensive capabilities have been severely reduced.

In the North after my successful attack, I decide to try and keep Leningrad cut off from the rest of Russia. For this I position my strongest available unit on the airfield and the hex next to it. As my bonus turns are about to start, I'm counting on Seille withdrawing to escape the fury of my attacks.

In the North I'm also a bit low on unit count. I could probably be a bit more effective during the Summer turns if I had more units with a little less strength. In hindsight, I find that having less units on the board made it easier for Seille to contain and funnel my offensives into a particular direction. And especially in this wooded terrain, I would need all the combat bonuses I could get, especially from concentric attacks.

In the Center things stay mostly as they are, some artillery strikes are of course conducted as usual.

In the South, the situation is stabilized. My air forces have taken a heavy toll of the Red Army spearheads and their offensive power has been spent. With the large number of reinforcements heading into that theater, I expect some substantial gains to be made.

At the end of this year, Russia's 1943 production will come into play which will definitely mean my demise unless I can take a major center from them. Looking at the map, I lack the strength to push on to Murmansk, the terrain also favoring the defender there.

The road to Moscow is well defended. The only progress I could make there was if I were to turn AG South northwards and straight to Moscow. However, the troops from the Smolensk front would probably be pulled back to the city. This would mean AG Center could advance as well, but if the push failed, I would reap no rewards at all.

In the East however, there was the lure of easy-going terrain, a weak defense, and ripe pickings. If I could take Stalingrad, Maikop and Baku, then my production would be on par with the Russians and I could enter 1943 with confidence. Also, both AG South and AG Romania would have their "backs clear". But could it be done?

PS: I'm leaving on a holiday tomorrow for two weeks, so this AAR will be "on hold" for me for that time. As I return, the story will continue with the unleashing of "Case Blue". The "all-or-nothing" drive to subdue the Bolshevik Empire...

Not going for Moscow or Murmansk in 1941 but foregoing those targets for "easy" pickings in the Baltic Area. This sounds too historic to me.;)

Murmansk ? There was no way to get Murmansk.
My defense was too good so far for any german major achievements.

Mostly i reacted very well to Georges attempts to get Moscow or other important places
like Sevastopol.

But now this will change ;-)

Btw, i was wrong.
The germans don´t fight at 150% for the next three turns.
My russians lost the half of their attack value, so Germany has a 200% advantage (like i had in the winter).

I don't understand why George has left a powerful panzer unit on static garrison duty West of Rostov. You'd think that could be handled by an infantry unit.

The question is what he planned with that unit beside protection of the northern flank of AG Romania.
Maybe he wanted to use it as southern attack arm in a attempt to cut of my Stalingrad Front.
Or he wanted to use it for a fast attack to Rostov.
Actually it´s hard for him to use tanks. Many rivers, a lot of bad terrain. with good effect he can use his tanks
actually only against my Stalingrad front.

Would you move out and transfer the tanks to other places ?
I would not. Imho the german unit is placed well (from german point of view).

Well, he may have plans for it but I would have moved it out and replaced it with a less mobile unit. I would have done it a few turns ago. But, now that you mention it, Rostov is looking a little vulnerable.....

Again: Where do you want to use these tanks then ?
Crimea ? Not the right battlefield for them overall.
The tanks are ok even in defense especially when combined with some infantry.
It is not a attack only weapon even this is the job they do better.
George simply waits here for a opportunity to use the speed of that unit.
It can become a pain for AG south if he starts using it against.
If he´ll do he need the tanks and the speed.

Still no update? I am longing to see how the summer offensive fares.

At least near Leningrad there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Leningrad is invaluable as it unites AGN with Finnland and makes things a lot easier.

The story (finally) continues with turn 19, June 17, 1942

Our offensive has taken the Red Army completely by surprise (well, sort of...) and they fight with a 50% penalty. Payback time!

Due to Seille's tactical withdrawals, the fighting mostly happens in the North around Leningrad. Despite the fact my ring around the city was broken, I am strong enough to take the city and push back the Red Army.

In the Center, I follow the Red Army's withdrawal to the Orsha-Vitebsk line...

In the South, all fronts commence their general offensives. Due to the withdrawals, most combats are fairly short since my units don't attack with their full AP allotment. Overall the results are "not bad" but also not spectacular.

The overview of the Northern half of the front shows the advances made. Overall the bonus comes at a good moment, since without it I would have been forced to conduct mostly defensive operations.

In the South, the situation is different. Although the Road to Moscow is well covered, the defenses towards the East are very thin and despite the fact the Romanians were as good as beaten a few turns ago, they are now able to retake the initiative.

Russian turn 19.

It contains less comments this time because i mostly just moved back my troops
to evade the german bonus attacks. Hard time for my troops.
I´ll go more into detail again when the bonus turns are over.

First the production screen + production routing.
