very sad, now I noticed theres a kingfisher to the right and a seagul, were thease independent or off ships in the harbour?
hears a close up off the same website, no help with identifcation of the unit... http://www.daveswarbirds.com/navalwar/morepics/deados2u.jpg

http://www.ww2pacific.com/aaf41.html
states :-
"Fleet float planes, normally 2 for a cruiser and 4 per BB, are not shown. These were typically Curtiss SOC Seagull or the newer Vought OS2U Kingfisher. Japanese photos of battleship row show planes aboard AZ, OK, WV. There were probably 20-30 floatplanes ashore that are not included in landbase counts" were they spares? not attached to units in a kinda pool?

also an observation is there apear to have been Goose amphibians at ford NAS has any one got any art for thease?

any coment or in put would be interestin.

Wouldn't think they were spares, just ship's floatplane units that were landed for routine maintenance, overhaul or sop. Seems reasonable to assume that when the fleet was maneuvering in peacetime to save wear and tear on the floatplanes only a few ships would have them on board, the rest would be landed.

In research, we found the hard way that the Grumman Goose did not work in squadrons of their own, but were attached to bases as "taxis", etc..

There were shore based Kingfisher squadrons.  They were called Inshore Patrol squadrons.  I believe one was based at Pearl Harbor when the war started.
