Went for a drive with the missus to do some shopping and after a few puppy-like glances, I managed to get permission to pop into my wargame shop to buy a game whilst she went off elsewhere.

Made it to the cash register with "Battlelore" and a couple of expansions - plus a set of beautiful Chessex dice (man they feel great to throw) and plonked them all down.

Just finished signing the card and in walks my wife! I crack a joke to the guys like, "look out guys, better go hide"! And the love-of-my-life says, "Is all that (seeing the pile of boxes) for you"!

Well, we get to the car and hop inside. I've got the Chessex container in my hand. On it, is it's price tag. My wife notices it.

"Eleven dollars!" My wife chimes.
"Yes", I say. "They're special dice".
"Why?" my wife replies. "Do they always throw sixes?"

Man I love her.

I convinced my GF to go with my to a FLGS that I had discovered but had never been to before. Though I can pick up the boardgames that they had there online for much cheaper, it was neat to be able to pick up the box, turn it over and read the back - and just feel how heavy (or light) the box was. She patiently tinkered around with puzzles and other light wares while I spent over an hour picking up each wargame box, and then going back through before deciding to pick up some ASL stuff (yes - I said ASL stuff...picked up a new copy of Partisan! and some CH modules).

As we left she turned to me and said "you're such a geek, but at least I know where you are every night". Yeah, yeah...

Took her out for a nice dinner to thank her while I got my "geek" on. :)

Unfortunately(or fortunately, depending on your view) there are no game stores carrying board wargames in my immediate area. The closest is about 80 or so miles away in Rochester.  She went with me once and while I lusted over war games she puttered around with the family games and such. I bought 2 things and we went to the mall. Later I wanted to go back and look at stuff again..Like a trooper she followed me in and ended up plunking down her CC to buy me something for over 50 bucks. She has no clue what I want them for or what the hell those little pieces of cardboard are for but bless her, she lets me get my "geek" on just like GJK's GF... Its a wonderful thing to have understanding wimmin

I used to smuggle cd/manual in a magazine and hide empty boxes in the luggage bay of my car. To let her believe it was just a promo cd I was occupied with.

After my divorce I finally could go back to normal gaming life. :)

Right - I respect her hobby, she respects mine.

Yes it helps - I buy a game now and then for $30 to $60 but the computer is in the same room as her approximately $25,000 sewing/quilting center (not to mention all the stuff that is purchased for that hobby) so my games do appear to be on the cheap side.

A week ago I bought my lady a new flatscreen (32") TV (we have a small house), two days ago as we walked through Staples she said pick out your new monitor, well I didn't buy it there but I got my 20" HP. Monitor. Now if I hadn't turned 76 today I would have done something else ! (Yeah sure I have bought me another game).

Mine would laugh her cute lower backside off - I email her all the dumb women vs. men jokes I get and she does the same.

Went to the GF's house tonight for dinner (she made a wonderful pot-roast). Told her that I needed to leave by 8:15 because I had plans to play a game online tonight with some geek buddies. She completely understood and wished me well. Got home, logged on to VASSAL and loaded up the module for "Rage Against the Marines" that we're play testing (fun little game by the way!). We were wrapping up the 7th turn when the GF called; "just wanted to see how the war was going". "Going ok love" I tell her; "will give a full sitrep" once we've wrapped it up". She has no idea what a 'sitrep' is, but she was complacent with that answer. I wound up just losing the game and then called the GF to say goodnight. Gave her the full sitrep. She has little idea about Iwo Jima (I'm guessing that I'm the first that she's ever heard that name from) and she was a trooper listening to me rant about how it came down to the last turn and how I caught hell trying to capture the hill/mountain areas. God love 'em, she let me fully get my geek on tonight and didn't put up a stink at all. :)

No, he really plays Highway to the Reich

Seriously : he likes to sit on my lap while I'm playing a game and likes to "help" his boss by hitting keys on the keyboard and whacking the mouse, more or less in imitation of me. If you ever got a "qfdqf sdqjfkqs qsdfjsqd" email from me you know what I'm talking about.

One day I had this "ok, I'll get up and let you play by yourself" mood and took a picture of him to show my wife.

Bad move as it gained me a "did he beat you *again* in a game" wisecrack

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

I got that somewhere off of the internet. I don't possess even a fraction of the artistic skill to make a picture like that.

I would love to know how the originator did it too!

Whenever my wife complains about my computer time I remind her of when we first started dating and moved in together after 6 months and I set up my 286 before I set up the TV set.

I tell her she should have gotten the hint in 1991.

Well, at least she doesn’t mind me wargaming – on the contrary – she’s a vicious competitor in games like BattleCry, Risk and even FPS games. Played exactly 1 game in Doom co-op mode with her and she shot me in the back “oops, didn’t see it was you” <evil grin> – yeah, right

And she’s not the only one, got a couple of wargame buddies who’s wife/gf are pretty much the same - the day Matrix finally has that “Buy a Voucher” button on their website they’re going to make some extra bucks from them buying their wargame hubbies a X-Mas present.

Yup - got two of them - bright and friendly dogs - the kind where you put up a sign "never mind the dogs, beware of the owner"
