Half amoured. The Admiralty knew she was too lightly armoured and had completed half of her upgrade when she was sunk. Too busy showing the flag to complete it.

Can you imagine going Christmas shopping and seeing that in the Lego isle.

Im surprised I hadnt stumbled onto the Hood before, but thanks for introducing me to it - absolutely magnificent.

I'm not sure what you're referring to. Hood had no substantial armor additions after her completion. At that time, she was arguably the best-protected ship in the RN.

"Location of shell rooms and magazines–. This, Hood's "Achilles heel," would not have been fixed. The powder magazines would still have been situated dangerously over the shell rooms. "

I've always been under the impression that her forecastle had been reinforced. I now she was scheduled to have all of it done but I've just tried to find out where my info came from and can't so it seems i'm wrong.

I took a quick look and couldn't find any reference to changing the forecastle or the forecastle deck. If I had to take a guess, maybe you're remembering the unusual main deck arrangement; Hood was the first RN ship with the protective deck extending horizontally across the full width of the ship, but this applied only to the deck above the magazines. The midships had just your basic turtledeck, and this is the great irony--the fatal 38cm hit probably went through this turtledeck area where there was no horizontal protection and, because of the extreme target angle, was able to get into the magazine area.

I personally don't see this as a big deal. Do we consider Scharnhorst and Bismarck tragically vulnerable for having their shell rooms below their powder magazines? Hm, well, maybe we should....
