Hi everyone
Finally got the game after spending many hours on UV.
Quick question how do I get General Douglas MacArthur out of PI. I have had a transport that won't load, a fast transport blown out of the water and a sub transport depth charged. I still hold Clark feild, Bataan etc
Cheers

He already is out of the PI.  Somehow.  Check SWPac's HQ.

If you are just trying to get MacArthur out (and not all of USAFFE), merely swap out the commander, and he will go back into the pool. Leaders are rather mobile in the game, and aren't subject to the problems of moving units.

However, Ambassador is right: there are already 2 MacArthurs in the (standard) game, so you don't really need to get him out.

Thanks for your help
I was just reading some of the "tips" and by all accounts I should have got the whole HQ out and suffer the PP loss. Still you live and learn. I also left all the base engineers in the PI there as well, my bad!! I will check SWPac's HQ tonight when I get home.

SW Pac without McArthur is like a peanut butter sandwich without the sardines.

Besides, who would Nimitz fight with.

Which still makes him better than Eisenhower, Bradley, Gerow, Clark, Patch, Hodges, Devers and most every other US army commander.

Well, it’s not quite fair to compare apples and oranges. A Supreme Commander has way different imperatives than a Division, Corps or Army Commander. I note that nobody mentioned the best US combat commander in several decades (imho), Joe Collins.

Job of a Supreme Commander is different from even an Army Commander. They have to take a very, very long view, and put operations into a context. So you can’t judge them on the basis of combat commander performance.

I am not a MacArthur fan. I believe his military performance was generally sub par. However, I must admit that certain of his operations (Inchon, for example) are still gamed and still viewed as examples of breathtaking, marginally acceptable, risk.

He was not a nice man; he was a cold, arrogant, self-important piece of work. He let his troops bleed for his glory, lied about his casualties, ignored the sacrifices of our Allies, and promoted himself to the exclusion of all others. But …

He could, and did, make the big call. I must give him that.

Eisenhower was too much the politician. He would fit right in with todays "politically correct" world.

Bradley was the most intelligent general I ever met. I got to spend 2 weeks with him when he came to Ft. Benning back in '76 for the bi-centennal thing. I was his assigned driver while he was there. Fascinating man.

Clark, well ....

I think that Eisenhower's positive qualities are greatly undervalued. Without him, the Allied camp might have split assunder. MacArthur could never have acomplished what he did halfway across the world.

Anyone who thinks Eisenhauer was a mediocre general hasn't read much about him. He had a keen grasp of the most important aspects of any military problem. And yeah, he was a consummate politician too. He had to be, given some of the people, especially Montgomery and Patton, whose egos he had to constantly stroke in order to get them to execute orders.

Definitely. Read Army at Dawn and Day of Battle for good characterizations of the man and the tasks he faced.

Well, I dont like him for 2 reasons. Dad served under him in the war and hated his guts and some of that probably rubbed off, but in the game his inspiration is too low for my taste.

First and foremost, he caved in to Churchill way to many times in agreeing to let Monty have his way.

Monty was one of the best assets the German army had in France and the Low Countries in 1944.

Actually Monty was the best WWI General in WWII.

Couldn't agree more, was my PoV several times when this was discussed at the hearts of iron forums.

But what IMHO makes him a great leader in a different way is that he perhaps cared more about the lives of the soldiers under his command than any other of the famous leaders (think of Rommel, Patton...)

Yeah.  Sure.  "Let's send the 1st Airborne 100km* behind enemy lines, they'll hold 'til the rest come".  That's caring for the lives of his soldiers...

Market Garden was a failure mainly due to bad recon. Montgomery didn't use his paras deliberately as cannon fodder or thought he could achieve a great victory by sacrifcing them.
