This is an IJN only AAR!!!

As Miller took over after a month: NO MILLERS in this thread, no reading, no posting!

As there is no sign of AE to come within the next months, I´ve decided to take on another opponent. Bigbaba is the Allied commander, I´m going once again as the Japanese. This is a Nikmod 9.2 grand campaign.

This was agreed on hrs and game settings:

Game settings:

1 day turns
historical first turn off
allied damage control on
advanced weather effects on
reinforcements variable +-15days
PDU on
sub doctrine off for both sides
sub auto ops off

only one port attack on turn one, no overabuse of the turn one movement bonus (means no landings on turn 7 in Australia or something like that)

max. aircraft on airfield max. 50*airfield size (+about 10%) eg size 4 = max around 220 planes (around means perhaps 223 but not 238!! )

max. aircraft in sea hex = "around 450" (= 5 Essex carriers or the equivalent size 9 airfield). Can be adjusted to around 550 also if you like.

Japanese are not allowed to do strategic bombing in China! Far too easy to destroy all the ressources, HI and OIL. Japanese may bomb everything else of Allied territory.

Allied are not allowed to do strategic bombing of JAPANESE OCCUPIED ALLIED territory. This should prevent the Allied player to do suicide attacks e.g. with carriers to destroy some oil facilities (which I´ve seen enough) and for the reasons mentioned under above point. Allied may bomb everything in Japan, Korea, eastern China, Thailand = everything Japan held at 1941/12/7. If you want to starve Japan, take the bases or sink the ships!

B29 aren´t allowed on naval attack

B29 only on level 6 or 7+ airfields, this should limit them to places that were big enough in real life.

4Es on nav attack min alt 10.000 ft

ASW TF max 6 ships

PT boats max 6 at a base (1x6 PT TF or 2x3 PT TF. Not 6 TFs with single PTs!)

no sub invasions

no mini para drops. As many para drops allowed as wished but they should involve at least 300-1000 men at min.

cutting off units only with "real" combat units, not some 10 assault point base forces

no use of dozens of small barge, MSW, ... TFs to guard ports (engine can´t handle dozens of small TFs in one hex)

no exploit of dozens invasion TFs going at one base, means: if you need 300 ships for an invasion, put them into 5, 6 or 7 TFs but not in 60 TFs with 5 ships each.

most hrs are easily to follow and won´t come up anyway, most important will probably be the ac stacking limits. If you would like any other hrs included also, I´m fine with that. My experience is the more hrs, the better.

If you find those hrs biased to one side, I´m happy to play both the Japanese or the Allied.

First turn is done, took me only some 3 hours, so I´m pretty sure that many things came short in planning, this will most certainly lead to many problems in the coming weeks/months.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/07/41

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off, I hate subs...

Sub attack at 43,49

Japanese Ships
AK Utide Maru, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS S-36, hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
28 casualties reported

big AK will go down...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 29,54

Japanese Ships
AK Awazisan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW W.4
MSW W.5
MSW W.6
PC Shonan Maru #6
PC Shonan Maru #7

Allied Ships
SS O19, hits 5, on fire

Japanese ground losses:
41 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

another big AK is hit and will be lost also... the attacking sub takes one real hit and 4 near misses but will surely live on...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 36,54

Japanese Ships
AK Sanuki Maru, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS KXIV, hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
112 casualties reported

god damn! Seems the half dozen of enemy subs are placed pretty well already... Also this AK will be lost...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And here comes the port strike. As usual, the IJN is only allowed to attack one port on turn one, in return the Allied are not allowed to form new TFs.

Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
F1M2 Pete x 52
E13A1 Jake x 44

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 10

SS Seawolf, Bomb hits 1
SS Shark, Bomb hits 1, on fire
SS Searaven, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AP President Madison, Bomb hits 1
AV Langley, Bomb hits 1
SS Perch, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x E13A1 Jake bombing at 2000 feet
4 x F1M2 Pete bombing at 2000 feet

this is the second time I´m doing this in a PBEM. The first time it worked better though. Don´t know if a sub is really damaged if hit by a 60lb GP bomb.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But here comes the main strike:

Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 53
G3M Nell x 124
G4M1 Betty x 60

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 10

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 23 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 1 destroyed, 12 damaged

Allied aircraft losses

Allied Ships
AK Anakan, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AK Corregidor, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

SS S-40, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Shark, Bomb hits 1, on fire
SS Tarpon, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
AK Capillo, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Bittern, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AO Pecos, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Salmon, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Perch, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
SS Sealion, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
SS S-38, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AP President Madison, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Swordfish, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
PT PT-31, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AV Langley, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AVD Childs, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Seadragon, Bomb hits 1, on fire
PG Isabel, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD John D. Ford, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AK Compagnia Filipinas, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Pickerel, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Sailfish, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
SS Stingray, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
TK Gertrude Kellogg, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
SS Permit, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
SS Spearfish, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
SS Seawolf, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
SS S-37, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Pillsbury, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AS Holland, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AK Paz, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x G3M Nell bombing at 6000 feet
4 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

about 35-40% of the attacking bombers carried torps, a good ratio. I´m not sure if a torp is more severe for a sub than a 800 kg bomb, but flak losses are really light so it doesn´t really matter if the bombers attack at 200ft or 6000ft. 12 subs are confirmed sunk after this turn. I can only hope that bigbaba doesn´t come up with the idea to set sails with all his damaged ships next turn as I will attack again. Bringing out everything next turn would be the best decision for him because even if a lot of the damaged ships would sink, if they stay in port they will ALL be sunk. At least I would send out all my damaged subs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KB took position off Hawai and attacks the enemy airfields...

Day Air attack on Pearl Harbor , at 112,68

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 90
D3A Val x 135
B5N Kate x 143

Allied aircraft
P-26A x 8
P-36A Mohawk x 4
P-40B Tomahawk x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
D3A Val: 1 destroyed, 28 damaged
B5N Kate: 6 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-26A: 7 destroyed
P-36A Mohawk: 16 destroyed
P-40B Tomahawk: 44 destroyed
PBY Catalina: 24 destroyed
F4F-3 Wildcat: 4 destroyed
SBD Dauntless: 9 destroyed
B-18A Bolo: 9 destroyed
B-17E Fortress: 4 destroyed
A-20B Boston: 4 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
143 casualties reported

Airbase hits 70
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 340

Aircraft Attacking:
18 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
27 x B5N Kate bombing at 10000 feet

losses within the attackers are light, the airbases on Hawai are completeyl destroyed. Now the question is, what will the USN do? Will they run next turn (I guess so)? But where will they head to? There are only three directions which are East, North or South. I would go South at flank speed. I´m not willing to split KB so nevertheless that I think best would be to flee South, I will place my carriers 4 hexes East of Pearl with the orders nav attack/port attack. The chances are 3:1 in bigbabas favour that he moves the right direction, if he decides to run.

Damn! One of my subs sitting in the retreat route to the South from Hawai is attacked by DD escorts. Glen sightings later on reveal that the enemy warships are fleeing South from Pearl. As mentioned earlier, KB is sitting four hexes East of Pearl, no sense sending them full speed after the fleeing ships. At the end of the day, two enemy TFs are spotted 6 hexes South of Pearl. The TFs are identified as : CACACACACACACDDDD. With six hexes of movement this could come close to the max movement of the old and slow BBs from Pearl. Perhaps this is just a feint though and the BBs are still sitting in Pearl, there´s still a dark anchor symbol, so still a lot of ships there.

Most bombers were bombing but those 800kg bombs are killers. Another six SS are confirmed sunk today, bringing the total of SS sunk at Manila to 18. IIRC there are 22 subs at Manila on 7 Dec so only 4 should be left, all four heavily damaged and perhaps a couple are already sunk but not confirmed due to FOW. After this day it is obvious that the attack on Manila was a full success with the submarine force totally destroyed. This should give me at least one and a half years until the Allied will be ready to mount a real sub offensive into the SRA. So when the Allied SS force has grown to remarkable numbers again, this will be the time when my better ASW PC are coming in numbers from the shipyards.

The ships and the port is left burning heavily...

48 Kates are despatched to attack a single small AK at Pearl... to make it even more severe, no escorts are accompanying my precious high experienced bombers. Due to the massive attacks on the enemy airfields yesterday CAP numbers were very low and the enemy fighters weren´t able to break up our formations or to shoot down one of our bombers.

and then we launch a big strike on the big TF spotted North of KB... this is the problem when you have to decide if you set your bombers on nav attack, port attack or nav/port attack. Would have been better off setting half of my bombers to port attack and the other half to nav attack. So far bigbaba made the right decisions around Pearl.

another strike on the TF North of KB. A dozen cargo ships are sunk, I would have preferred a port strike though.

Japanese assault odds: 33 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied ground losses:

Jolo´s airfield will be operational tomorrow with a base force able to support 140 ac. Two daitais of long range IJN torp bombers will make Allied shipping quite hard South of the Philipinese now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Jesselton

Japanese max assault: 22 - adjusted assault: 12

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 12 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Lae base !!!

Half a dozen construction btn and 25000 supplies are on the way to Lae to build up this airfield from level 1 to level 4 to have long range torp bombers ready within the next couple of weeks when the Allied could think about bringing ships into this area. I´m not in a hurry to take the Solomons or Southern New Guinea so perhaps bigbaba brings some troops or ac into the area, they would all be destroyed...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kuching

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 906 troops, 1 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 33

Defending force 8805 troops, 101 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 169

Kuching is the next important base to take. The mixed rgt that was landed should take the base next turn. Then the area South of Singapore should become a no go area for Allied shipping also. Singapore´s port is empty, all shipping left port today. I didn´t spot a single TF though...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Miri

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 445 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 6

Castor,

I have a couple of questions if I may.

I saw your rule "PT boats max 6 at a base (1x6 PT TF or 2x3 PT TF. Not 6 TFs with single PTs!) " .  What happens if you hit the button & you get more than 6 (I recieved 8 just last night in a Stock game)?

And I also noticed in the Opponents Wanted section that if you create a game using a Mod, I can play PBEM even if I don't have the Mod loaded?

I plan on asking for a PBEM here very soon, I plan on reading this with great interest

you get most times more than 6 PTs, that´s correct. So the solution is to either disband them in port or pull out the others to another base.

If you are the Allied player you don´t need to have the mod because all the "mod data" will come with the save file from the Japanese player. The Japanese player has to install the mod.

ASW attack near Songkhia at 24,43

Japanese Ships
DD Minegumo
DD Natsugumo
DD Arashio

Allied Ships
SS KXVII, hits 1

Have unloaded our major invasion force for Malaya at the port 1 at Songkhia. One enemy sub has been sitting in port and one in the hex East to it since yesterday. The enemy troops in Malaya are all running towards Singapore, it seems I will get all of Malaya without a fight and the enemy is intending to hold only Singers. I had planned to land another two divs somewhere further South but this doesn´t seem to be necessary if the Allied forces abandon all bases. Singapore will become a big prison camp, I will starve them to death. Without having to do an invasion at an enemy base and without fighting the way South, my divs will be in good shape for other tasks.

The Betties and Nells have been replaced by IJA medium bombers which will have the duty to kill the rest of the Allied shipping at Manila and to destroy the airfield at Clark and Manila. Same as in Malaya, it seems that the Allied LCUs are also doing a full retreat in the Philipines. I expect them to hold at Clark and Manila.

I-155 tangles around with the escorts after hitting a Brit destroyer. Before being driven off by the escorts, I-155´s captain identifies BC Repulse being in this TF so probably we´re speaking of Force Z here. This is NW of Singapore and with 90+ long range torp bombers in range and set to nav attack, Force Z should now already be destroyed as this TF was spotted by search planes also (without spotting the BBs though). None of my bombers from Borneo or Indochina launched though. Have moved in 54 long range torp bombers more and tomorrow we will have more than 140 Betties/Nells at three different bases set to nav attack 15 hexes at 10.000ft. No matter if the enemy goes North or South it will always stay in range of at least 90 bombers. We have also some 70 aircraft (recons, patrols and bombers) searching for Force Z. My bomber bases are well supplied, not overstacked and two of them are within range of air HQs, so tomorrow should be interesting...

Those APDs are the best ASW weapons the IJN can field for the next 18 months. First time this ASW TF runs over a sub and the second class sub is finished off by APD-36, sinking the bastard with two real hits and 5 near misses. After this day we have 25 subs confirmed sunk and I hope to see another two sinking at Pearl. I doubt that the Allied have more than 15 operational subs at the moment.

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
1 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

As you can see, POW isn´t part of this TF anymore and nearly all torp bombers concentrate on the fast battlecruiser. The first torp hit wasn´t severe and many torps missed but after the second hit, Repulse was a sitting duck and easily finished off by the rest of the attackers. The battlecruiser is reported sunk and shows up in the sunken ship list as the first major Allied loss of the war.

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

Force Z under heavy attack. The dire condition of the Prince of Wales is clearly evident, she can be seen steaming in circles. Repulse on the right of the picture is shown in a pall of smoke.

Allied Ships

Aircraft Attacking:

A small strike decides to launch against the POW that was already in a bad state after the one hit from the morning strike. Another hit and the BB is heavily damaged probably not able to move more than 3 or 4 hexes next turn. If weather allows our bombers to launch, then I guess we will finish off this important target tomorrow!

Nice start, but I'm a bit confused.  I thought NikMod was with enhanced AA, still those losses don't appear to be higher than losses in stock games.

Flak isn´t a real killer yet, but it´s very intense already. If you look at my Pearl Harbour Strikes after the 7 Dec you will see that 40-50% of the bombers coming in low are damaged. In half a year when the enemy gets the first ships to upgrade the AA suit then a major TF will have some decent AA defense. Not to talk about a base where a couple of US baseforces are.

edit: this is the last attack on Pearl with Vals:

Day Air attack on Pearl Harbor , at 112,68

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 53
D3A Val x 84
B5N Kate x 128

Allied aircraft
P-26A x 1
P-40B Tomahawk x 1

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A Val: 3 destroyed, 40 damaged
B5N Kate: 1 destroyed, 12 damaged

even though only 3 are shot down immediately, another 4 were lost on the way home and nearly 50% were damaged. The Kates weren´t hit as hard because they were bombing from 15.000ft. Would I have had ordered them to bomb from 6000ft then some 60 would have been damaged.

With Ops losses, that's a bit higher indeed. And it's also true all the battlewagons had already left, so this reduces the flak too.  I'll watch your AAR carefully for some time then.

I was also wondering... where did you send your mini-flattops ?    Apart from a few B5N who attacked some DD instead of Force Z (and they must be the land-based Kates, since they're escorted by Oscars), I have not seen any Kate attack in those six days, except from KB.

One CVL (Ryuho with 48 ac) is sitting in Truk, waiting to get the Zeroes upgraded and another (smaller one with 30 ac) is sitting with CVE Hosho in Osaka, also waiting for the Zeroes to upgrade. I´m not that a fan of using a carrier TF with some 70 ac and with Force Z destroyed now, there is no need anyway. I usually don´t use the baby carriers in the SRA because with Jolo and Kuching you have Betties ruling the whole SRA anyway. With most of the ships in Manila destroyed, it makes it even less important to have one or two CVLs South of the Philipines.

With the stacking limit for sea based hexes I can never use all of my carriers in a hex anyway and won´t have enough carriers to have two "KBs". So I will use two CVLs to replace one of my fleet carriers when the fleet carrier is in need of repairs/upgrades/pilot training. So if nothing real bad will happen I should be able to have a 450 ac KB ready for a fight all the time. I´m not a fan of splitting KB anyway so I will keep the 450 ac TF together.

Biggest problem at the moment is the lack of aircraft. Pools for Zeroes and Oscars are empty and production is low. Will take some time to get my factories running and even longer to upgrade all those Claudes and Nates. At the moment I don´t seem to need my fighters anyway, as bigbaba is doing a Sir Robin like I´ve never seen it before. Serves me well, I always thought a Sir Robin defense isn´t good anyway, but there are different oppinions out there. I will advance as long as I won´t be stopped somewhere. And if I never have to fight seriously, then it will be hard to really stop me before mid 43.

BB Prince of Wales sunk! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

HMS Prince of Wales (Battleship, 1941-1941)
HMS Prince of Wales, a 35,000-ton King George V class battleship built Birkenhead, England, was completed in March 1941. In late May, while still not fully operational, she was sent into action with the German battleship Bismarck and received significant damage from heavy gunfire. Following repairs, Prince of Wales carried Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic to Newfoundland. There, on 9-12 August, Churchill joined U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Atlantic Charter conference, the first meeting between the two English-speaking leaders of what was emerging as the "Grand Alliance" against the Axis powers.

Following her return to British waters, Prince of Wales went to the Mediterranean, where she successfully engaged Italian planes off Malta in late September. Sent to the Far East with the battlecruiser HMS Repulse to counter the swiftly developing Japanese threat in the region, she arrived on 2 December 1941. On 8 December, the day of the Pearl Harbor Raid on the other side of the International Date Line, the Japanese landed in northern Malaya. Prince of Wales, Repulse and four destroyers were sent to attack the invasion force. After finding no targets, the British ships were returning to Singapore when, late in the morning of 10 December, they were attacked by a strong force of Japanese high-level bombers and torpedo planes. With no friendly planes to protect them, both heavy ships were hit several times. Repulse sank at about 1230. Prince of Wales capsized and followed her to the bottom less than an hour later. The first capital ships to be sunk by air attack while operating on the high seas, their loss further shocked a naval world already stunned by the events at Pearl Harbor only a few days earlier.

Ok for the CVLs.

Congrats for the PoW.  Although 22,38, that's not far in the north of Songkhia.  He should have fled south or west full flank, instead of plain north at cruise speed...

yup, that´s what I´ve asked bigbaba too. I guess he went South the second and third turn but then decided to turn around and go North. He told me that he was surprised that I already had my bombers so near to the front (they are stationed in Indochina, Malaya and Borneo) so early so this has to be seen as a beginners fault.

I don´t know if he has no PBEM experience at all, but this definetely was a beginners fault. Even the AI has torp bombers in Indochina on turn one...

That's part of the reasons I've started following your AAR : checking the beginner's (at WitP PBEM) errors to avoid.

However, his BBs escaped unscathed from PH.  He did not panick and sent them right through the cloud of subs that litter the area south of PH, instead of an east or north route (where you were more susceptible of lying in ambush).  He deprived you of some 1500-1600 VPs that way.

While conventional wisdom would suggest the escape of the battlewagons is insignificant in the grand scheme of the war we shall see what results from it. One danger is their reappearance in the south somewhere where air cover is sparse, if all of them are together it could pose a threat to large slow transport groups even with some escort.

On the other hand, if you catch the BB's out of PH with the KB their losses will be huge and those heavily damaged BB's won't be coming back like they do at PH.

I should commend you for the continuing strikes on subs in PH, that is something that will do serious damage to him. They are undoubtedly a huge pain for the Empire. Plus, good forward strikes on Jolo and Kuching!

Well, actually I´m not a beginner anymore, have played a couple of thousand turns PBEM. So if I make faults - which will undoubtably happen - then it´s because I´m stupid, but not because I´m a beginner!

I couldn´t expect to catch the BBs, like I mentioned before he can go three directions from Pearl at full speed and I can only cover one. So my thinking was as followes: I would go South and after 20 hexes or so, flee either to the West Coast or Australia, as I think this would be the best decision. So I thought that my opponent would think the same and therefore do the "unexpected" move just straight East towards the West Coast. But of course while thinking what would be the best, what would I do, what does he think what I think... it turned out to be the wrong decision.

The VPs aren´t a problem, as a) I don´t play for autovictory anyway (always nice to achieve it though) and b) if I get my palnned targets, then I will achieve autovictory easily anyway. My last IJN PBEM achieved a 6,5:1 autovictory on 1/43, while only 4:1 is needed. And in that game I also didn´t get 1600 VPs for BBs sunk in Pearl.

Hi!

Nice to have you aboard.

As I see it now, even if the slow BBs would be used in the South Pacific there isn´t much they can do. Using those BBs to attack invasion TFs of some 4 or 5 cargoe ships won´t hurt me much (if the BBs are able to catch them) and as soon as I have a level 4 airfield those BBs are in real danger of getting sunk by Ms. Betty. If I were him, I would have those BBs just sit at the West Coast for the next 18 months to have them for bombardment and invasion cover duty from mid 43 on. If he uses them earlier, the chance to see them being sunk is somewhere around 75% . He can´t really do a serious offensive the next year (at least none where I can´t overwhelm him) and if he tries to challenge a major invasion of mine, well, if I do a major invasion then there will be 450 hig experienced carrier based ac there to cover the invasion. So this wouldn´t be a good place for the USN BBs to be.

If he wants to use them the next months to attack my small invasions of all those more or less empty areas then he would be better off not using them all together. That doesn´t make much sense in the game, better would be to use one BB coupled with a CA/CL and some escorts. Would do the same - if not more - damage than to use 5 or six BBs in one TF when going in against a small invasion TF.

It was a nice surprise for me to see 5 subs still sitting in Pearl on day two of the war, guess that was just an oversight by my opponent. We´re a week into the war and he has lost some 30 subs and THAT is great! Those 30 subs would do a couple of times more damage to the Empire than the old BBs from Pearl. A recent Allied game of mine saw me sinking some 100 IJN ships with my subs within the first year, so even if the MK14 torps are defective you still can do A LOT of damage. Takes some micromanagement though and of course this can be interdicted within 3 days if the IJN player decides to put 400 Sallies into a small area to sweep the sea of subs. I have restricted myself to a max of 1 IJA bomber sentai per base on ASW, the next sentai MUST be at least 8 hexes away. This should result in frequent sightings of subs and an attack now and then, but I´m not interested in seeing 4 or 5 hits on subs every day.

Jolo and Kuching are the usual early targets for the IJN, while Jolo wasn´t even really necessary this time, because Manila´s port and everything that was lying there was nearly destroyed and the Boise must have run flank speed South. At the moment, the Boise is the only thing that is left somewhere South around the SRA that is a threat. And that´s why I have my heavy cruisers in this area.

Sorry, I was not talking about you, but about bigbaba, who said himself in his "opponents wanted" thread that he was a beginner at WitP PBEM. My apologies if you believed my earlier comment was meant for you.
EDIT: although I greatly respect him for thrusting himself against a veteran jap player. I wish him good luck.

Are you willing to share your strategy ? Are you after India ? Australia ? Siberia ?

No need to apologize!

At the moment there is no grand strategy, all I will do the next couple of weeks is to seize the usual IJN targets (means the historical ones) and then have a look on what happened. It´s only a week into the war but as it stands now, it seems bigbaba won´t try to fight my forces at all which I see as a mistake. Of course he won´t take fewer losses if he doesn´t try resistance but it will also end up in a very fast - while hopefully still methodical - conquer of my targets and a full operational Navy, Army and Airforce. Especially the Army will be important, if most of my divisions and brigades are fully combat ready then I can load them up and land them somewhere. If they are worn out then it takes a couple of months to have them combat ready again and that´s the time the Allied need. And that´s the reason why I try to use more force at one place at one time like it is done usually. If you have one or two divs more for an important target then you take the target faster and your divs will be in better shape than if you have to grind down the defenders with a dozen attacks when you suffer perhaps one or two 0:1 assaults. That´s what is grinding down your own divs.

When looking at the Allied troop movements then I expect him to only hold on to Singapore and Manila/Clark. This will mean I will just starve him in Singapore, attack Clark and force him into Manila and starve him there also. That´s a tactic I used a couple of times already and everytime it worked perfectly. After 5 months the enemy assault strenght is only a shadow of what it is in 12/41 and this without having to attack a single time. If you just have one division and a couple of support troops that sieges the enemy in Manila, the Allied there can´t do anything because you get the urban bonus, so the Allied would need some 2000 assault points there to force you out again - this never worked so far in my games.

Same goes for Singapore. If he retreats all his troops to Singapore, then I will just sit in the woods behind some forts at Johore Baru and block him. He would have to come over the river and get mauled by the river crossing. 5 months later, the enemy resistance will be only light. Also here, 1,5 divs should be enough to keep the Allied honest. Of course there will be some 100+ IJA medium bombers near those prison camps to bomb the airfield now and then. So not having to fight in Jannuary for Manila and Singapore means I have at least 5 or 6 divs that are fully combat ready to be shipped elsewhere. Not to talk about the additional half dozen brigades on hand. We will see...

I see.  And Betty/Nell groups would prevent him of evacuating Singapore (or better, if he does, sink them on the return trip), while he won't have enough 4E bombers to suppress your airfields until much later.

I suppose it's the same reason that made you refrain from attacking Hong Kong right now (unless I missed the combat report) ?  Letting troops there rot a bit, and move in.  Probably with chinese command divisions, to use the SRA div that starts in Canton elsewhere, am I right ?

For the Philippines, isn't it better to land in force in Lingayen, isolate the north-easter USAFFE troops (including two PA divs) and crush them separately, rather than letting them fall back to Manilla ?  IIRC, lack of supplies reduce AV by 4, which is countered by the urban bonus, and this is without counting the forts that would be constructed in several months.  Would they "cost" you less assets by letting them retreat rather than wiping them at start ?

I doubt that he would seriously think about an evac attempt of the troops in Malaya after he experienced what my bombers did to Forc Z.

I´ve got three more crs to post, one includes the attack on Hong Kong. Yes, the same reason as stated above, I wanted to send more than one div and an eng rgt. Better to send 3 divs to take the town in one or two days than to send 1 div that takes 4, 5 or 6 attacks and gets beat up in the attempt.

Bigbaba already has abandoned the South, I will take the two bases South of Manila in the next couple of days. He´s now holding on to Clark and Manila. You are right that without supplies the urban bonus makes it still a 100% assault value. But I´m talking about starving them, not killing them off with attacks. I will have arty there and bombers. After the supplies run out you can see the assault value dropping by around 20 points each day and the defenses will collapse soon then. At least this is my experience. My experience also is that if the Allied sees that he has 1000+ assault points at Manila and the IJA only 500 then this is the point to order a shock attack - which will get repulsed bloodily due to the urban bonus. Seen that so often, I always have to smile. When I need 1000 assault points to both block Singapore and Manila then I can even leave those troops there for a year - it never took so long though.
