I have been looking around for something new to play online against real, living people, and was wondering what your folks thought was a good game for some online multiplayer fun?

The ability to actually be able to find opponents easily is important.

FPS, RTS, & MMORPG need not apply. No twitch and grind allowed!

Thanks in advance!

You might consider Harpoon ANW.  The AI is crap for SP.  If you want to do a demo run with ANW MP, just let me know and we'll let you try a session to see if it is for you or not.

I assume you are talking "real time" games online when you say multi player.
For a great MP game, CotA is there for you. It is not a "strategic" level game though. It is an operational simulation of corps and smaller battles. It is easily controlled during real time play vs a human.
My only real time strategy game (HOI) is not manageable in on online situation-there is just too much to do, and/or takes too long. Some try, but I have read of many failed games. It is still a great game against the AI (you can play much faster also.)

[edit]
Reread original message again, and noticed point about RTS. This post fixed, and it also counts off COTA & HTTR.

I played CotA and enjoyed it somewhat, but it really wasn't my cup of tea.

Awww - Twas hoping for more suggestions!

This does bring a related matter to mind, though. Multiplayer strategy games were common in the board game days (players to play them were not, however ). It seems to not be the MATRIX style but games like "Pax Britannia" (Avalon Hill) and "Empires at Arms" (Victory Games - not the Australian contraption with a similar name) sure were fun with the diplomatic interactions. These would be great multi-player strategy games if redone for PC and especially if playable at sites like "Game Spy" where finding six opponents would not be that hard and could be played direct (sans e-mail). And yes, both were turn-based.

Well, I have "Crown of Glory" but I haven't tried to play it yet (as well as many others). Perhaps this plays somewhat like "Empires at Arms" and is a good multi-player strategy game.

That's one thing that has really bothered me with the development of strategy/wargames over the last few years. So many have to resort to things like PBEM when by now they (imo) should have a direct link (in the case of 1v1 games) or server based multiplayer system.

Mekwars is pretty fun!  I gave it a shot the other night and enjoyed it, even though I got thouroghly trounced.  Silly jumping mechs killed me easily.  Fun though!

In it's day, Sid Meier's Gettysburg.

It's still a great little game, IMO, but it can been hard to find sensible opponents.

I recommend you to read Classic BattleTech Introductory Rulebook. When you learn weapon to-hit modifiers and weapon ranges, you'll get hang of it. But sufficient to say, that for most of the fast units (whether 'Mech or not) "speed is life". On the otherhand, I had PXH-1 Phoenix Hawk (45 tons, fast & jump capable) parked on heavy woods blasting with Large Laser at MAD-3R Marauder (75t heavy grunt). It was other player's fault to expand running MP to move big 'Mech just 2 hexes at the time, which gives that unit +2 to-hit modifier (when attacking other units), but don't give it any defensive to-hit modifier (when it is getting shot at). That continued for several turns, and I had two missile 'Mech firing LRMs too. Summary: Even most powerful BattleMech can be useless when it isn't used right.
