In many scenrios you find there is a road that runs parallel to a river, and while the river and the road do not grafically cross you can actually "destroy bridges".

My first thought was that this was a mistake, and my second thought was either the game should correct this or that the designer should not draw the map in such a way. And my third thought was that perhaps it was gamey to destroy such bridges as it was a mistake.

But then I changed my mind.

An hex can actually represent 10 km, 25 km, 50 km. In reality there are many roads in that travel for kilometres along a river, and often crosses over the river because of the geography of the terrain. It is much more likely (at least where I live) that if a road runs along a river for 5 km or more, it will cross it over at some point, so there will be a bridge to be destroyed.

I can´t say whether this is the same thought that passed through the mind of the designer of the game or the designer of an scenario, but in my mind now I accept to see a road blown that runs parrallel to a river.

At 50km/hex, the road might be 20km from the river. Yet you can still destroy the "bridge".

This is a problem with TOAW. Not a major one- but it is a problem.

It's not unreasonable to disturb a roadway running parallel to a river or a elevation by creating a landslide either. Some terrains where railbed and roadbeds run parallel would be more than likely he only places where topography would permit construction of either. Always a hazard in counter-sabotage concerns. Greater manpower required to restore and multiple effects on from the types of transport affected.

These are all rationalisations which only apply in certain geographies. On a flat plain, where the road is not adjacent to the river (which will be the case for most hexes which contain both a river and a road), there is no reason why it should be possible to demolish the road. Meanwhile, a road running through mountainous terrain with no river, no doubt on a narrow shelf between steep slopes, is quite impervious to demolitions.

If any further proof be needed, look at the number of scenarios which have added house rules to prohibit demolishing bridges except in certain situations.

My opinion is that TOAW "desperately" needs hexside rivers, I hope to find this feature in TOAW IV.

I find it helpful sometimes to represent damaged or disused stretch of roads. Of course it would be preferable to actually be able to destroy roads in TOAW.
