Status: offline 		U.S. Fleet Carrier force reorganization

Refits and 6/43 upgrades are now completed for ships assigned to U.S. carrier task forces. Carrier task forces have re-formed on the U.S. west coast and shortly departing the west coast for front-line operations. CV Essex and four Independence class CVL's have joined the six fleet CV's (Lexington, Saratoga, Yorktown, Enterprise, Hornet, Wasp) that were in service through 1942.

A British CV task force with CV Victorious, BB Prince of Wales, CA Australia, and 4 CL’s is in the process of forming on the U.S. west coast. Escorts for this TF will be reinforced with U.S. destroyers. This British carrier TF will temporarily remain in the Pacific to reinforce U.S. carrier forces while the KB remains at large in full strength.

Additional U.S. carrier reinforcements due to enter the game within the next 60 days include CV Bunker Hill and two more Independence class CVL's. CV Bunker Hill and one Independence CVL will form a new U.S. CV task force with the second Independence CVL reinforcing an existing CV task force (either TF 1150, 1155 or 1156). Escorts for the new CV Bunker Hill task force will be drawn from ships retained in reserve for use in carrier escort duty and/or new ships entering the game as reinforcements.

As of now, F4F Wildcat remains the primary fighter plane in use by U.S. carrier forces. Upgrading of fighter aircraft on U.S. fleet carriers to F6F Hellcats is expected to start approx 8/1/43 as these planes become available in sufficient quantity. Production of F6F Hellcats begins on 7/1/43 with monthly production at about 260 planes.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, and at Pago Pago all report increased Jap air patrol activity. G4M Betty air patrols reported at all three locations. B6N2 Jill planes also reported near Kwajalein, G3M Nell & B5N2 Kate aircraft at Pago Pago.

More U.S. subs are enroute to patrol sea areas near the Japanese home islands. A sub patrol TF (9 subs) from Pearl Harbor expected to arrive in this area in the next 5-6 days. Three additional subs from Adak are individually enroute to or approaching the Japanese home islands area - several Ki-49 Helen air patrols reported by one of the subs from Adak.

One action reported off Japanese home islands. AAR follows. SS Blackfish is the last remaining sub on patrol off Japan from the previous group of U.S. subs sent into this area - Blackfish will begin leaving the area and returning to base for refit and replenishment.

Australia: Jap recon flights over Alice Springs and Tennant Creek - Pillager's recon over Alice Springs appears to be concentrated on detecting a small number of Allied LCU's in Alice Springs rather than the much larger number (300-400) of Allied planes in the process of gathering there. Otherwise quiet.

Hudson I recon over Exmouth reporting 37 aircraft (15 bombers), 5 Jap LCU's.

Allied recon flights over Port Moresby and Darwin both report no detected activity or change in Jap forces. Jap fighters on CAP (Ki-61 at Darwin, A6M3a at Port Moresby) spotted at both locations.


DEI: A variety of Jap planes flying patrols spotted by Allied subs throughout the DEI area.

SS Harder off Soerabaja attacks two Jap barges in separate surface actions, neither Jap barge confirmed sunk.

SS Herring off Pontianek heavily damaged (system damage 28, float 38) in an unreported action - no AAR of this action appearing in either the Allied or Japanese (Pillager's) after action report. SS Herring has started returning to base for repairs.

U.S. West Coast: A British carrier TF now formed and departed to join U.S. carrier forces. This TF includes CV Victorious, BB Prince of Wales, CA Australia, 4 CL (Leander, Achilles, Perth, Hobart), 2 British & 6 U.S. DD's.


Central Pacific: U.S. subs operating near Kwajalein reporting G4M Betty and Jap carrier planes (D4Y Judy & B6N2 Jill) flying air patrols. G4M Betty patrol flights also reported by U.S. subs at Pago Pago and the Canton Is area. B5N2 Kates also spotted flying patrol at Pago Pago. Otherwise quiet.


South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Penhryn Is and Auckland. PBY Catalina on patrol from Penhryn spots unidentified Jap sub west of Penhryn (hex 106,113) moving on SW heading. Otherwise quiet.

Sigint report for 6/10 includes entry indicating Jap 15 Naval Construction Bn now located at Luganville. 15 Naval Construction Bn is new in the Japanese OOB.

Central Pacific: A reduced level of Jap air patrols continues to be reported by U.S. subs operating near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, and Pago Pago. Pillager appears to be shifting Jap air squadrons back and forth between bases in the Central and South Pacific theatres to occasionally change coverage of naval search air ops. Largest number of Jap air patrols now reported at Pago Pago - including G4M Betty (some of these moved southward from Kwajalein) plus continued flights by G3M Nell & land-based B5N2 Kates. At least one G5N Liz squadron now operating in the Kwajalein area.

Central Pacific: U.S. submarines report Jap air patrols concentrating further south towards the Canton Is area and Pago Pago, very light air patrols remaining near Kwajalein.

Pillager is at this point no doubt aware of my recent (U.S.) buildup at Penhryn Is and points further south, and he's shifting at least some of his defensive forces southward in response. With U.S. carrier forces reorganized and returning to the front line area, Pillager's shift opens the possibility of launching a third U.S. sortie against Kwajalein. Even an aborted carrier sortie would require Pillager to keep one eye turned to the north. Another possibility is using escort carriers on a decoy mission somewhere in the north, even if they return to base without hitting anything. Getting Pillager to spread out his defense is key - the more that Jap forces are dispersed to cover a wider front, the easier it will be for Allied forces to crack the outer perimeter. Pillager made rather skillful use of geography in creating the (his) Jap outer perimeter line - my first attack on his outer perimeter will be a tall order no matter what location I choose to attack it at.

Greatly increased Jap air patrols reported by U.S. subs now operating off the Japanese home islands. Planes spotted on these patrols include mainly IJA bomber types (Ki-49 Helen, Ki-51 Sonia) and floatplanes (F1M2 Pete & E13A1 Jake).

No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships in any of the above locations.

Several U.S. subs operating off Japan are now entering the sea areas N of Kyushu via the Tsushima Straits and the strait S of Hokkaido to scout Japanese ship activity.


South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Penhryn, Norfolk Is, and Auckland. Otherwise quiet.

G3M Nell detected flying naval search over Penhryn - no entry in 6/19 game turn Operational Report, only appeared on game turn replay, could be a "synch bug".

An almost continuous stream of U.S. transports with LCU's, supply, fuel, aircraft arriving at Penhryn and bases in the Society and Cook Islands. Base facilities at Penhryn and Papaete already constructed to maximum port/airfield size. Construction of base facilities well advanced at Bora Bora, Aitutaki, and Rarotonga. These bases now covering the re-established "all on-map" shipping route between the U.S. and NZ/Australia (nearly all shipping moving across this route instead of the Panama City ship channels). Another use of these bases is as jumping off points for U.S. amphibious offensive ops against the Japanese outer perimeter from the south. Aitutaki is within range of several Jap bases along the southern flank of Pillager's outer perimeter for some long-range U.S. recon planes and 4E bombers.


Australia: No Jap recon flights. The recent obliteration of Daly Waters airfield appears to have ended these ops for now.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs report little change in Jap air patrols near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Pago Pago. Several contacts with Jap carrier planes (D4Y Judy & B6N2 Jill) reported near Kwajalein. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Jap surface ships in any of the above locations.

Unidentified Jap sub detected W of Jarvis Is - appears to be another "picket line" sub Pillager is employing in the "no-mans' land" sea area between U.S. and Japanese controlled islands.

Plans are being considered to form one or more ASW TF(s) to operate from the most forward U.S. Central Pacific bases (Johnston and Jarvis Is likely candidates) with the intent to perform occasional hit-and-run ASW attacks on Jap picket subs. ASW TF would be kept beyond or at the outer limits of the range of known Japanese LBA.

U.S. subs operating near the Japanese home islands report light Jap air patrols in most areas - however, relatively large numbers of E13A1 Jake floatplanes reported flying over hex 63,39 (Sea of Japan N of Kyoto/Maizuru). Presence of E13A1 floatplanes in these numbers possibly indicates a large number of cruisers and BB's currently based somewhere in the Japanese home islands.

Status: offline 		Summary of Operations 6/24/43

Start of shipyard repair activity for the 6/43 ship upgrade had been deferred on the U.S. west coast until repairs for 4/43 ship upgrades were fully completed for U.S. surface warships. With most of the U.S. surface warship fleet (except for old BB's, Omaha class CL, and DD with low AA ratings) operating as escorts in carrier TF's, priority had been given through mid-June to complete 4/43 upgrades on these ships before starting any 6/43 upgrades.

With completion of 4/43 upgrades, activity is now starting on the 6/43 ship upgrade which is turning out to be rather large. Ship upgrades for 6/43 include a useful AA upgrade for U.S. Liberty class AK's - this class consists of a rather large number of ships and is a substantial part of AK transport inventory for the U.S. Other U.S. ships receiving improved AA in the 6/43 ship upgrade includes many AO's and also some classes for other auxiliary types. AA upgrades for Liberty AK's and other auxiliaries will now receive some priority as the more ships that can launch "lead" at Jap planes, the better. A need for this should be apparent once U.S. amphibious operations start.

Many ships eligible for the 6/43 upgrade are currently at sea (dispatched on various transport ops in late 5/43 to get them out of port before the 6/1/43 game turn). These ships are now being taken in for upgrade as they return to port - ships with minor system damage will be taken in first to receive 6/43 upgrade along with a refit, undamaged ships with 6/43 upgrades will remain in operational service and upgrade later as shipyard capacity is available. Most 6/43 upgrade activity is in U.S. and Canadian west coast shipyards with a few occurring at Pearl Harbor.


Central Pacific: Light Jap air patrol activity reported by U.S. subs near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Pago Pago. No reported contacts at any of the above locations betweeen U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships.

U.S. sub S-39 entered the Jap base at Kwajalein - detected a substantial Japanese minefield, one Jap TF, 64 ships at anchor.

Relatively quiet near the Japanese home islands - U.S. subs south of Japan reporting no Japanese air patrols or contacts with Jap surface ships.

A large number of E13A1 Jake flights reported by SS Tuna operating in the Sea of Japan north of Matsue. SS Tuna attacked and hit by a Jake - system damage 28, float 61.


South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Penrhyn Is and Auckland. Otherwise quiet.


Australia: No Jap recon flights. Generally quiet.

North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon over Paramushiro Jima reveals 2 Jap LCU's, no detected activity. I've started this particular U.S. recon not so much to explore a possible invasion site (though I've had several LCU prepping for this location just in case) as creating something else to attract and divide Pillager's attention. Your basic "spread the defense".

Central Pacific: Little change in Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Pago Pago. Very light Jap air patrols detected off Japanese home islands.

As of this game turn, 8 CAF "Den of Thieves" fighter squadron is on stand down to rest (reduce fatigue level back to 0). It's been flying airfield and ground strike missions almost daily against various targets in north central China. Current overall pilot experience level of the "Den of Thieves" is 71 with no pilots lost in action - slightly better than average for KMT fighter units overall. Its sister squadron (7 CAF) was recently transferred to Chungking for upgrade from P-66 to P-40N's.

Experience levels for KMT squadrons (both fighter and bomber) vary from the low 60's to near 80. A total of five KMT fighter squadrons have upgraded or now upgrading to P-40N's. I'm looking at P-40N upgrades for one or two more Chinese fighter units, possibly to be done ahead of upgrading lower-experienced USAAF squadrons.

What I'm really looking ahead to with the Chinese air force is the availability of B-25J Mitchells (this type not expected in production for the next few months). It is very likely the first squadrons upgrading to this type (from SB-2's and Il-4's) will be Chinese. Chinese bomber squadrons have done quite well - best pilot experience levels in the KMT air force is among these units.

Give these guys another year or so... there will be some very, very good Chinese air units.

North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon continues over Paramushiro Jima. No detected activity or change in Jap forces.


Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting G4M Betty & G5N Liz air patrols near Kwajalein, light Jap air activity near Canton Is, quiet at Pago Pago. U.S. subs off Japanese home islands reporting light Jap air patrols. No contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships reported at any of the above locations.

Unidentified Jap TF (two ships) detected at Makin Is. Beach hex at Makin still remains in Allied control, Pillager has not landed Japanese forces at Makin to occupy it.


South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland.

G4M Betty flight (probably naval search) over Penhryn Is. Two PT-boat TF's docked in Penhryn base, no U.S. transport or naval TF's are currently at Penhryn.

U.S. sub Raton reports G4M Betty air patrol at Noumea, also engagement with Jap transport TF. AAR follows.

Allied recon flights over Port Moresby and Exmouth both reporting no detected activity or change in Jap forces. A6M3a fighters on CAP reported at Port Moresby.


India/Burma: Jap recon flight over Cox's Bazar. Japanese minesweeping ops detected in Rangoon.
