Can anyone point to a good source for historical pro (NFL/AFL/AAFL) rosters, preferably with jersey numbers? I've ordered Total Football and the Encyclopedia of Pro Football and neither is much help. Total Football has what I would call "lists" but they do not specify positions or jersey numbers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, anyone know of a source for info on the Continental Football League (i.e., rosters)?

Thank you.

Both of those are excellent sources for NFL and AFL rosters. As to historical college rosters, that's a hit and miss type of thing. Many schools will have a list of all-time lettermen. Those lists will give the years played and sometimes the position(s) played will be listed. Not all list the positions. Notre Dame's lettermen list includes position played as well as height and weight. For schools that don't have a lettermen list that is accessable on the internet, I use current rosters (available through many sources) and alter the height and weight to reflect the era I've created the team for. Sometimes, I just make up names or use the names of relatives and friends.

Me, I make my own world. Real teams, fake players. I do try to recognize actual retired numbers, though.

This is an archive of a site no longer updated but it does have uniform numbers.

You can also try the team sites through www.nfl.com. Most teams have all-time rosters on their sites that include numbers. I copied the pages and pasted them in to MS Word so I could reference them in the future. Some sites have PDF files you can save.

Bassman, that web.archive.org site is a goldmine--many thanks for the link!
