So i decided to try a 33-36 generated campaign as french against the far east.
Big mistake.
When I had a battle against the phillipines... on turn zero... more than half my entire army was destroyed (actually destroyed...i mean no units left in the unit at all...both infantry and armor)by their offboard deployment bombardment. Obviously my campaign ended at that point.

This is actually a little ridiculous isnt it?

the culprit is the seacoast mortar. 110 penetration (HE!) and 40 kill with a 19 warhead.

is offboard artillery supposed to have these values?

I see that unit, its a 12 Inch Mortar Battery, which seems to be maybe similar to this unit pictured here.
I know there were at least a couple batteries of these babys at Correigedor and Bataan
No idea if the game stats are correct but It looks pretty mean.

Yeah, I thought it was kinda strange to have these coastal-defense weapons used against ground troops (unless it was an amphibious landing?), but the Filipinos do have an odd weapons mix. Remember, these are the guys who have native irregulars armed with bows & arrows and bolo knives.*

* Anyone else reminded of that bizarre attack on the patrol boat in "Apocalypse Now", with Montagnards using spears/arrows? That's how the boat chief died.
