Crikey -fallen of the front pages I is...............

The big -well the only Convoy i have of note leaves Naga - for home. It has a stupidly big escort of Pgs, MSW, pc's -and 2 dedicated ASW groups on set to follow.

get the pop corn ready -this is going to be one hell of a trip to get em home -they aim straight for tokyo..
I have counted planes -2000 fighters in Japan -average experience about 40 -and I give up battling pilot bug -Im converting bombers to Kamis as fast as I can.

14/10/44
In China its very bad -Tabpub tries a direct attack at Hsingyang -and bounces badly.
You probably read about it already -but I order a counter attack -I must try to bust the trap -and get out of here!

The huge convoy encounters -and sinks 2 ss!
And shsssssssssssssssss -the battle fleet is raising anchors -moving to kagoshima.
I have 2 AO left -if they reach point X -I may consider a final attack -attack when least expected.

6 full divisions of screaming troops attack at Hsingyang
A naval guard unit basically is wiped out, one division is at 50% disabled -most at 30% -but the chinese divisions are routed!

Now the mad dash for kafieng is ordered -we are out of here.

SS gato attacks the big convoy today -gets an AK - and escapes the counter attack
But silly ss tries again -and does not escape attacks 3, 3, 4, 5, 6.

16/10/44
In a rush of blood, other japanese armies attack at kaifeng, Wuhan -and are smashed up.
14000 casos in one attack -ouch -but i am desperate -what else can i do

I can see a about 6 to 8 ss homing in on the big convoy -today 3 ss attack - all miss, all atre damaged I think -the hunt is on.
And while the SS race towards this convoys very predictable course -my AOs slip harbour for points south.

We fight on!

The graet convoy fight carries on -Tabpub aint happy -but I now have 4 dedicated ASW goups -plus the convoys escorts protecting the 20 plus transports -now about 10 hexes from the home islands.
2 more ss have a go -1 is sunk, another sinks a AK - more ss coming, and more ASW groups too!

In China I abandon Hsingyang -and 3 stupid divisions go off road!, another 3 blast a blocking tank unit out of the way in the run towards Kaifeng.
They are all doomed -but we fight.
In Malaya a huge army continues to resist the enemy, weakening daily, but fighting on.
7 BBs at kagoshima
I found another AO - 3 Aos now slipping south to the west of the great convoy battle -headed to the phillipines -if they make it -the BBs will sail south

I have 5 other tankers west of Pearl harbour shssssssssssss -doing a great long blockade run just to see if they can make it
Also some 3 AS, 2 tankers, some crippled ships are in the great Aussie bight -also trying to sneak home
( Some have troops onboard - what if I invaded tasmania right now) -actually this is on -I need fuel)

Tabpub tells me that over 30 SS have been vectored towards the great convoy battle -today 2 SS attack it - 1 AK sunk -1 ss sunk

Yap is being pounded, and the Chinese front is absorbing a horrid amount of bombing -its all over there i think -several divisions went bush on the break out.
Kuikang has fallen -basically the entire army in China is about to be surrounded -and I can do nothing much about it

I have begun moving air support to Kagoshima -as the battle fleet gathers its strength.

as the great convoy battle nears tokyo -it has drawn a huge number of enemy SS east -which leaves a great gap in the blockade down the island chain to the phillipines
Down this my last AO's have raced -them and a 6 ship convoy full of precious fuel.
They are on the way to Naga -covered by a good LRCAP of fighters on Okiwana and Aparri
The BB strike fleet - 7 in total has sailed for the phillipines -Im convinced Tabpub is expecting me to hunker down now until the final home islands battles - lets see if I can surprise him

In Malaya the final base fell today -Jesselton lost

3/4 of the entire japanese army was deployed in Burma/malaya in this game -and I played I think a fair defence - I think WITP stock doesn't factor the jungle quite right.........

The great convoy arrives in Japan -the ASW groups will re arm, and I will get the next troop convoy ready to go
I actually recieved some peggy bombers today - wonder if they are any good?

The BB fleet remains undetected - of Okiwana today.

China is gone - he will overun me here by years end -I expect Shanghia to go in under a month

Going to relate operation sudden thrust -that shows several things

In stock its pointless having an airforce as Japan in 44
LRCAP seems to work in detering airstrikes
My luck is rotten

bsically the thinking is this -tabpub has gained a ggod beachhead sothern phillipines -fighting against heavy resistance
Jolo island is siezed -but a lot of ships are there -and his CV's have retired ready for the next operation -so here is an opening I think

In Japan only the Yamato, Mushia, 6 DDs, 3 smashed cls remain -the rest of the fleet reaches Naga safely -and refuels
One TF has 7 BBs, 2CAs and 9 DDs, the other 2CLs, 7 DDs
I move buckets of fighters into the phillipines -nearly all I have -and set them up as LRCAP for the BB's.
Bombers move into the phillipines as well -hoping for an openeing

The whole op goes pear shaped as 4 liberators attack me at Naga -they are shot down -but Im spotted

the fleet sails -and makes its way to Legaspi -goes around the corner
Move all fighters further south, bombers further too.

Fleets divide? -CL TF goes one way, the BB's another
Im well and truly spotted

No attacks on the BBs -but the CLs are attacked -I lose 2 DDs heavily damaged

The BB's creep closer -and all the bombers attack --------the newly spoted allied death star coming up from the south of Davao

With up to 9 enemy BB's spotted, counted at Jolo, and CV's racing north - its retire time to manilla -the mission a bust
I lose 200 a/c to his 3 smashing into his CAP - its pointless -this STock stuff is .....w ell we all know what it is. 40 zeke vs 80 Hellcats -surely some could get through

the 26th see's the fleet refuelled at Manilla -and ordered to sprint home -his CV's are racing up the east coast of the phillipines - all my fighters that remain are at manilla or Clarke -trying to LRCAP the battle targets as they flee north

Im going to hide the fleet somewhere in the north of the map -nothing else I can do I think -they are too slow to get in and achieve a surprise attack with his blanket air power now.

China -its all over -the army is trapped, or fleeing, or destroyed -tabpub can tell you about that.

Oh -only 1 AO left after this op too

Just for fun -a bunch of pirates -desperate for fuel and supplies are very shortly going to invade devonport! -that might provoke a nasty response.

tabpub CVs race north up the east coast of the phillipines - chasing my retiring fleet - and run straight over the top of my escorts and AKs that were at Naga -Its a slaughter as 15 pg's and PCs are sunk in the raids.
More night bombing by B-29's over the home islands -what can I do -nothing

I do hit an AK today with a francis -crumbs of comfort

It is pleasing though that all the LRCAP I organised keeps the BBs safe from the China air power

28/10/44

CL Katori and her AO are caught formaosa straight by liberators -both sunk
Kaifeng falls
His CVs are chasing hard to the North -but my BBs are going to make it.
Kagoshima is stacked with planes -hoping he will approach.

29/10/44
gamey -could be
Fun -definately
3 japanese base forces land today in a unoccupied GEELONG!
Purpose -sieze the base -refuel the 3 AS ships they are with -and there own ships -as they continue epic voyage home.
This is a tactic I must remember for other games

In fact -I am going to order a heap of small raider parties to sail tomorrow from Japan -his rear areas are all totally empty................

Time for the pirates to go and have some fun!

Well the pirate episode comes to the inevitable conclusion - some get away on a AK, but most get sunk as 4 DD race into harbour and sink the raiders.
3 fuel less AS ships are caught, and sunk as well

It was a good giggle

back in the real war - San Jose siezed by paras!
gazzillions of bombs dropped too.

1/11/44

daylight b-29 raid Tokyo - 139 of the buggars -i lose 13 fighters to his 3 bombers in the air -man the pilot bug has @#$%^%$ this game -rookies just do not cut it

Enemy CVs near Kendari.

2/11/44

Brit Cvs strike Palembang, manilla more Cv strikes
Manilla, Clarke hit hard by land based air
Pirates kicked out of geelong
B-29's over japan every night

other than that -the war is going fine

There are multiple CV groups operating on both east and west coasts of the phillipines -
manilla port is struck -and its carnage -many ships stuck here -no fuel, or damaged -or (ok -forgotten)

4 ak, a crippled tanker, some patrol vessels blasted.

Heavy air raids on the Northern phillipines - and literally no resistance

4/11/44
More bombing
more bombing
2nd turn in a row -where I plot nothing

5/11/44
6/11/44

I sent tabpub an E mail -apologising that this game will get very boring for a while
I have gazillions of troops in the phillipines - and they have sufficient supplies for now -
but the home islands are a desert for fuel.
Heavy industry has collapsed -and I am producing not much
No oil left really -and few resources too -which for Stock shows how sad things have got.

So tabpub has to bomb the troops -bomb them some more -and then bring a very big army
All my fighters are trying to protect the Home islands -and failing with B-29's hitting at 2000 feet every night.
The fleet of BBs is helpless -no fuel - and yammato still has to do her 12/42 upgrade!!
I will wait until the enemy gets closer i suppose -then we go on a death ride.

No AOs left either.
last 6 tankers - 4 are near new zealand -going the long way round as blockade runners - 2 left at saseabo - too scared to brave the SS lurking outside

So -Im still playing on -but man -the turns on my behalf sure are simple to do now!!!

game has entered a doldrum period -I have nothing I want to lose just yet -and tabpub continues to be painfully methodical

7/11/44
his CVs hit naga, fighting continues in Malaya, bombing all over the map (mainly phillipine targets)

8/11/44
Tabpub tells me this is the last ionvasion for a while -ormoc is invaded -the heart of the phillipines
My reaction -zip
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The invasion of bacolad is brutal -it will fall soon.

today most of my ASW assetts that are left, left port, and took on the sea of green symbols to the west/south of kagoshima - the action is nasty -, I sink 2? SS -and lose one escort .
his invasion of Ormac continues

The game still reflects real life fairly well -I have now an Industry pool that is officially empty!
Oil is all but gone, resources failing quickly too - I have about given up monitoring the HI ect - nothing i can really do with it.

I have audited the fighters I have left -I actually have 1900 in the home islands , and about 200 bombers.
no experience levels to talk about -pilot bug ensures that is as per real life!

B-29s over the Home islands - night bombing -kawasaki engines lightly damaged.
If I had a decent HI pool -all the effort tabpub is putting into China air power would be a total waste of time -to really hurt -he will have to day bomb at some time.

Another ss sunk -and i see tabpub retiring his SS south.

China has settled a bit -but war lost there
Fleet of BBs still repairing though!
central phillipines now his

been a while since I updated this marathon
Wonder how many other games have been this long -it feels, like, like forever!!

Must admit late 44 -no industry, no oil, no fuel, no production to talk of -hard to maintain enthusiasm.

My notes on each turn are getting smaller and smaller - to plot my turn takes about 3 minutes -everything, well nearly everything is on CAP in Home islands -and the fleet is anchored -becalmed with no fuel in all the major ports

Heres the notes for a week of war

12/11/44
Just more bombing!
I wish tabpub would just go for the throat so something exciting would happen!

13/11/44
Bombing!

14/11/44
And more bombing

15/11/44
His B-29s attack oil centres in manchuria ect -nasty stuff -the bombers treat the oscar CAP with the usual contempt

16/11/44
155 B-29s hit Brunie -tabpub says that was a mistake -there is 160000 tons of oil there -it might as well be on the moon!
In Malaya divisions and regiments are now being destroyed in the final cleanup of the bulk of the japanese armies -a few unit surrounded messages now
This also is starting to occur in China -which is now a route -I have the remains of the army at nanchang - and Its grim.

17/11/44
More bombings -more mass casualties, no signs of tabpubs next move though

18/11/44

The fleet - 9 BBs -all now in top nick
4 CA
4CL
37 DD

And no fuel left really

19/11/44
SHOCK!!!
14 sonias attack from Legaspi -and sink 2 enemy AKs! -invasion fleet i think near Legaspi
50 plus night fighters engage 70 B-29s -and I lose 3 fighters -c'mon now -thats pathetic -surely some B-29s should go down!!

bring on AE -this one rapidly curdling I think.........................

Well yes -the game grinds on -

20/11/44

111 B-29s from China night bomb Japan -60 night fighters fail to shoot any down -and lose several of themselves -night fighters are a bust in this game .

I can remember posting way back in very early 44 that tabpubs grand strategy would lead to this -and I said to him that it would lead to a boring game -which at the moment it is - 100 plus B-29 raids -unstoppable, coming from china on a nightly basis

So there it is.
he refuses to "leap ahead" -or raid deep - as if I could ever penetrate his CAp -this is stock after all - just taking a base a month, while I sit in Japan, fuelless.

The game is lost, but I will play on, simply because i am stubborn -and because I still have the Bbs left!

21/11/44

kaifeng - all troops dead

22/11/44
130 b-29 -Osaka tonight -60 hits

23/11/44
79 tonight -osaka
he also bombs oil centres at tientsin

Cagayan is invaded today -I only have 2 base forces there - a big army lost southern phillipines.

24/11/44

97 B-29s hit osaka tonight
Some francis bombers actually attack today -and sink a AK at davao -but i lose an entire ASW group near Formosa
cagayan falls

Come on tabpub! I say! - came and have a real go!

OK -Im about ten days behind -and just for a change -lots to report coming up.

In China the bulk of the surviving army retreats to final stand -Shanghia -I might be able to support it there.
171 B-29 over the home islands tonight.

29/11/44

Just 188 bombers over japan today........................
Ominous signs of a build up near Honkers, invasion formosa coming - I begin to see what fuel is left -and Yamato and Mushia sail for the west of japan

30/11/44
Today I actually get a 10 ship convoy to Siapan -supplies -but I don't think the ships will get back............

i am about to try an experiment.
enemy is gathering his APs ect at suchow? on the chinese coast- and his british task force is in the area too.
Formasa is his next target.
Im going to see if its possible to get a surfacegroup into his invasion fleet -before it sails.
I want to see how well i can cover the TF with LRCAP -or whether its a pointless exercise.
thus, 1cl, and 6 dd depart japan -and a very large percentage of my fighters begin moving to the south west corner of japan.

and the battle line gathers at saseabo...........

a lot of postings lately have been very short
I ain't had much i can do
With HI pool empty, oil all but exhausted - its time to try to use the BBs in glorious attempt to disrupt the enemy. I can't stand the thought of the BBs getting sunk in port.

They sail - yamato, mushia one TF
The 4 old BBs in another -Mutsu leading
2 battle cruisers in another
And 2 CA tfs also sail -small -but units as well

The single Cl TF reaches Okiwana -and he spots one BB

The next 6 days will be carnage - i expected it.
tabpub tells me I threw him badly of balance
The biggest disapointment -the way the liberator bomber kills so many ships.......
the biggest satisfaction - the giants have their moment...................

And so it begins -the last great march of the Ents.

87 p38,26 liberators attack the ships at Kadina -22 zekes
only 8 zekes lost - and the liberators hit transports

I begin to flood the south china sea with PG/PC and msw ships.
The CL TF -attack Swatow!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My surface task force successfully charges into Swatow harbour -only to find that the target AP convoy has retreated!!!
OH Crap!

Then the carnage begins.........
First 3 DD charging across the south china sea are night attacked by black widows -straffing them.
One is crippled, the other two retire

The surface task force -despite having heaps of LRCAP assigned to it -is attacked by literally100's of planes -you name the type -its there at the party
CL sendai, 3 dd are sunk, then another huge wave of planes -and its a total of 1cl, 6 dd sunk.

So that was a bust!
My strikes begin - 50 odd fighters vs 50 odd hellcats
I lose all my strike -he loses 1 plane
Cursed stock!

Another 50 odd fighters escort15 peggy - these are my very best planes -franks -and peggies at 83 exp -the franks mid 50's
the 47 hellcats, 9 corsairs shoot down all but 13 peggies!

yes -an attack!
And the Flak takes all but 2 down.......................... no hits

he begins to bomb all my airfields - not too bad

yamato and the battle cruisers are enroute to Okiwana- and under as many fighters a s CAP i can gather -and the rest of the battle fleet is following -

I order all the ships to attack, or go to taipae -where I hope to hide/fuel, and launch the attack from
The weather is going to be rotten -here we go!
At least 30 msw/pg/pc flood the area -attack!

Still storms everywhere

I transfer anything that flies to iether formosa/okiwana/the north coast of the phillipines -even some to hong Kong

The 2 giants reach Okiwana tomorrow -the slow BBs are still following. The rest of the fleet is also in the south china sea.

Weather clearing tomorrow -its carnage time!

And the war exploded again

Copy of my notes:
multiple ASW actions south china sea, ss-019 finally sunk

tabpub -naval bombardment of the pescadores -and i hurt 1 cl, 3dd badly

very large CV group spotted to the west of siapan!
BB Mushia spotted at Okiwana!
heavy raid on shanghia
raids hit legaspi, naga, clarke field, clarke field, vigan, laong, aparri,Iloilo - all a mix of heavies, mediums ect -some jap planes lost
3 huge raids hit the pescadores
Then liberators begin to attack the many pg, pc, msw in the south china sea -i lose 3

My turn-
5 grace and 8 francis(huge raid hey) leave the phillipines -and manage to torp the CA Suffolk
3 betty fly -3 torps into the CL dauntless -it sinks
21 kamis fly from taan -1 tanker hit near Cam ray bay
Aparri launches a raid -27 tony,66 zeke,18 frank - against a 17 corsair, 85 hellcat CAP
The lot are shot down
Another strike -39 zeke,21 tony,18 frank -all lost - so far just 10 hellcats shot down
third strike -another mix of nearly 100 fighters goes in -and again 100 Hellcats have a feast -only 14 shot down
Stock is yuk -but with these poor pilots probably as per real life today!
More raids go in -all destroyed on his CAP - 3 betties, 10 betties, 3 oscar kamis, 16 grace
, 20 fighters, and 4 peggy -all lost

In the pm -
His CVs strike Loag -hard -carnage on the ground.
11 liberators atack -20 tony, 15 george, 58 zeke, 48 frank at aparri - and i have a win small here

Again my big strikes go in -and again chewed up

In the air its been a huge day -422 losses to his 70

My orders for tomorrow -every fighter i can, is placed on LRCAP duties -the battle wagons adavance still!

tabpub invited me to read his AAR -so I have.
Really, really annoyed that some people say i should be embarressed over the final result of this battle -even before i have given my side
Could they do better?
Consider -
I have no fuel -this truly was the one way trip
I have no industry left
The pilot bug took all my pilots -I am trying to fight with average 30-40 pilots
its stock
I could leave the fleet in harbour -to get sunk next month anyway -or have a go

What would you do?
Ill say it now -there are players who play to the end - and those who talk about it.

Now for my version of events - the warts and all (nothing personal against honourable tabpub -but his AARs do only function when he is winning -or won a great victory)

Today Tabpub sends most of his CVs to near Naha/bataan island area -obviously hoping to attack my ships
My plan was this - yammato and Mushia to steam full speed into the valley of death -and be the bomb magnets -while the real hope I clung to - the battle cruisers - were covered by LRCAP - and could attack the invasion fleet. I attached what CAs I have left to these 2 TFs of BCs
The older BBs wre to follow as best they could -and again be the diversion

This plan worked

I will say it again -it worked -up to the last detail - apparently one task force of BCs managed to sail through 5 hexes full of allied CVs, BBs, the invasion fleet it was aimed at -but finished in the empty port of soochow
game mechanics -not tactics here beat me
But Im ahead of myself -this is how it played out

The day began with 334 B-29s hiting Shanghia- CRUMP!
100 port hits just for a start
his CVs attack - 5 msw sunk - spread over all the South China sea - I like watching 100 plus planes dispatched to sink a MSW -not to attack a capital ship

I have a huge CAP/LRCAP assigned for the fleet at Taipai -its hopless!
30 frank, 18 zeke defend against 59 hellcats, 56 helldivers, 14 avaengers, I lose all my planes -he loses 16 hellcats, 3 helldivers, 4 avengers

4 msw sunk in the port

Then his LBA attacks -64 p38,45 p40n,13 liberators -the great naval attack bomber of the war
39oscars,11 jack,7 frank, try to defend -nearly all are lost too -they do shoot down 14 P40n

The Mushia takes 3 times 2000 lb bombs (thats the start)

More LBA -40 p40n -45p38, 28 liberators -they hit a CL, and BC Kirishima is hit

42 oscars,23 kates - 57 hellcats - all lost -no losses inflicted
some grace attack -and torp a DD -the dutch one I think

Yet more LBA -61 P38 escort liberators -they meet the CAP -55 oscars,62 george,8 zero,83 zeke,33 tony
42 P38 are shot down -i lose 120 defenders
The 6 liberators still attack -and haranua , Tone, are hit

tactics are still working -just do not have enough firepower to pull this off - this is the entire available japanese fighter force being expended -and compared to what tabpub has -its a drop in the ocean!
The last strikes for the day are the worst -my shredded CAP fails.......

I put up still over150 fighters over the battle line near Okiwana -its the corsairs that cull -they are CV based -I lose 50 fighters to his26 planes
I am hit hard - Hyuga one bomb, 1 torp
Nagato -4 bombs, 2 torps
yamishiro -1 bomb -3 torps
Ise -2 bomb -1 torp
Mutsu -3 bombs

I am faced with the slow BBs are doomed -to damaged to flee -to crippled to fight
At taiho, the sisters reamain in great nick, and the BC's are there -also functional
If I flee, they will not escape -his CVs are now between me and Japan......

The invasion fleet is -however, well within striking range.
I can reach it -with luck -tonight

OK -what would you do...hmmmmmmmmmmmm
