I've often wondered why PBEM turns require one user to enter orders followed by another user. Of course the optimal method is for both users to enter their orders at once and then merge those orders to create a turn. Anyone know why the game works this way?

It's the way they disigned it? As it stands, WitP probably could not have orders done at the same time. there are too many items that actually happen during the orders phase. One thing that would help WitP 2 is for no action to take place during orders input, just a list of orders that then are done during the turn execution. Then it would be possible to do what you say.

Indeed, thanks Nomad.  I realize that someone has certainly contemplated this before.  Given the incredible length of time spent playing this game, might I say that although not low hanging fruit, this would add immense value in terms of playability to the game.

A strategy might be for them to create a middle layer, allowing each player to enter orders, the orders are of course stored in a database and then read out into the middle layer, as if Japan and then the Allied player were at the computer entering orders.  The turn is then processed in typical fashion.  Such an approach might avoid massive code rewrite.

The game already has a WEGO system with "simultaneous" turn execution, but it would be a time saver to allow orders to be enetered in parallel..then merged into one file before execution. That would eleminate a lot of waiting for files. This would be even more useful for multiplayer although every unit would have to be specifically assigned to one command (including ships).

Of course, some machine has to be the master to execute the turn given the random aspects of turn resolution.

I suppose one could have a remote server do the turn execution then post the results for download.
