I bought Close Combat - A Bridget Too Far, back in the day. Played it a little, but I didn't like that is was real time, and also did not have the patience to play it correctly. I tried rushing my guys around too much and they all died. So I scrapped it.

So, When CC Cross of Iron came out, I gave it a pass. Didn't like CC back then, why would I like it now. Well, the other day I was in the mood for something new to play, so out of boredom, I bought Cross of Iron, and started playing.

Well, I don't know if its because I'm older (i.e. slower) or I have wised-up or what, but I love this freakin' game. Playing the Grand Campaign, you start out feeling cocky, sweeping though the first maps like the Russians don't even exist. Ah, but that's just what the game wants you to do, because, when you get to the gates of Moscow and you get caught inside the walls by that bastard T-34 and his evil uncle KV-1, and you are just waltzing around cause you think its going to be a walk in the park, the bottom drops out of your world.

Now you are screwed. You units are decimated. You have gotten your a** kicked so bad that HQ won't give you any requisition points. And the worst part is, the Russians are coming and they are pissed! So, you find yourself reeling back all along the country that you so easily captured before, hoping to be able to ambush thos invulnerable Russian tanks, then finding out when the battle begins that your pos panzers won't start cause its too cold!

Anyway, I'm asking myself, "Why did you wait so long to buy this game?". And I'm telling anyone out there who has not played it yet, BUY THIS GAME. Play the Grand Campaign and play it slow. Pull out your WWII reference books (you know you want to) and spend delicious hours poring over stats trying to decide it you would rather buy that 50mm AT gun or pay the extra bucks and get the Stug III. Cry inside when your Engineer squad gets decimated by mortar fire and feel like you *earned* it when you get that first promotion.

Whatever you do, don't take the Russians for granted. It will come back to haunt you.
