Hello everyone, I am in the process of creating a german campaign that I would like to be able to make available for fellow war gamers to download. It runs from spain to berlin with battles possible in England, united states and even against the Japanese (1946ish if your wondering). Anywho, this is my delima.... This campaign is a little different, for obvious reasons, with a few extra differences. The map sizes are fairly small, ranging from 30x30 to 40x60, depending on the mission. Dont let the size fool you, the mission are very challenging with the enemy being a little extra smarter by using the reaction turn option and by setting way points (now there's a special kinda hell) The action is fierce and brisk at every turn, with someone trying to punch your ticket with every breath you take. Each scenario has a different mission with lots of challenges, they usually take about 9-12 turns to complete (lots of enemy) My problem is that these battles are on a smaller map with just enough purchase points for a fairly small battle force (two tank sec, mortar platoon, engineer platoon, two spec ops platoons, 1 inf atr, and 1 88at sec) these can be changed of course but you get the idea. I have only seen campaigns that are very grand and elaborate and more or less historical. I know most everyone likes these types so I am afraid that my campaign will not be accepted. I would like to hear some imput on what people think about this type of campaign. If anyone has any suggestions as to what they would like to see, by all means let me know. Anyway, sorry for the long note. thanks troops...Hey, mogami, is that a German dive bomber I hear Great note, man, very funny SS [This message has been edited by silentsurfer (edited October 12, 2000).]

Hi, I am obsessed about campaign being historical... To be honest, I am sorry to say that the campaign you described is bit too loosely based on WWII for my taste. But there's some idea in making a campaign about small-scale battlegroup kind of action in various battles of WW 2. -Kettu

I understand where your are coming from SS. I occasionally enjoy the "what if" scenarios, even if they have absolutely no historical accuracy. The play balance, challenge and excitement level has always been what did it for me in any game. As any former or current member of the US military will tell you even we run scenarios with “make believe” enemies from fake countries. Obviously there has to be “bad-guy” to save some friendlier less fortunate 3rd world country from to give the situation meaning. Does Krasnovia ring a bell for anyone? My “what-if” tendencies seem to manifest themselves in “what if” scenario’s, campaigns and tournaments. I have always been a role-player at heart. I am in the process of making up an “alternate reality” world if you will where there is no “political” toes to step on. Since this game (SPWAW), IMHO is the best of its kind (and probably the best computer version of any kind) I will use it as the basis for the world’s military technology level, etc. All the names of the countries will have been changed. I just have to come up with country names that use the same 2 letter unit ID as in SPWAW. I hope that by doing this I can limit the stereotyping that comes from political or nationality bias sometimes associated with certain nations (i.e. the German SS – Supersoldier or cowardly murder syndrome). I am sure that almost any positive or negative personality trait can be found in all nationalities, etc. Anyway SilentSurfer, bring it on. ------------------ "Double Deuce on the Loose"

Hello SS! I would like to see your campaign and love to play it. I love historical campaigns or scenarios but I also love playing the what if or any battle with a good challenge. The idea of small maps and small forces is very appealling to me. Been part of the Matrix team I've tested Wild Bill's campaigns and scenarios and I generated a lot of battles to test the new builds to the current version of SPWaW. I think it would be a nice change and a one of a kind campaign. So I hope you build this campaign for all to enjoy. I would also like to add that I would be please to have it on my web site for download. Thanks for your input guys. As for historical aspects, I do plan to keep it somewhat historical (I'm sure in some alternate universe, the Germans did end up fighting the Japanese over a conquored(sp?) America) I plan to take documented battles and locations of small engagements (not an easy chore, mind you) and run them as accurately as I can. Will it work? Stay tuned to find out. BTW, did ya'll know that making campaigns is a SOB to do? I have created 6 maps, 5 battles, tested 3 and refined 1. It took me about 25 hours or so to do. Holy crap. It's well worth it though, I'm having a great time doing it, and I'll be glad when I'm able to post it. Chow for now Surfer...oh, yeah, I didnt mean to offend anyone with the initials SS, its just me being lazy and thoughtless, I really did mean to give the impression of idolizing that particular group. Even though the Waffen-ss are my idea of the perfect fighting machine, the atrocities they committed and the cause they stood for merit no respect. Again, my apologies.

Yes, I know something of the grief of creating campaigns, having done about 30 of them in three different games. Utah to the Rhine has 22 scenarios. Heroes of the Motherland, 13. And Preparing the way, 7. They are so much fun when they are done right it is indeed worth the effort. I'm for a non-historical campaign. The issue for me is balance. Its gotta be tough to design a campaign that gives the player enough resources to do the job - without making it a walk over. Then there are those of us who tweak our OOBs for a week before we tackle the first scenario (How in the heck am I going to spend that extra 3 points?). Another good quality in a campaign design is surprise. How many of you sucked all the air of your den when you crested that hill in that Italian village in "Preparing the Way" and saw 2 Tigers sitting there? Or just when you finished off the Mark IVs and Stug IIIs in "From Utah to the Rhine" - settled in to go after the town and 4 more Mark IVs and (Damn it WB!) Panthers show up. I don't know about you guys but I was screaming....Foul! No Fair! Mommy! Loved every second. Let me experiment with my OOB (half the fun IMO). Then trick me, scare me, and make me scream at my monitor. Hats off to you guys who design.

Thanks guys, and do it I shall. I shall keep in mind "surprises" and try to have a good mix of historical and what if. I am also going to included some larger, grander battles with the other forces being assigned as "aux" so you can kill lots of enemy and break their things. I have just completed the Spain part of my campaign, I may send out this portion in a few days so people can test it and give me feed back. I may be a while before I get the whole campaign out, I plan to have it about 50+ battles Thanks again for the input, I am inspired Surfer

Surfer, Outstanding idea for a campaign!!! I find the "alternative future" issues surrounding WWII fascinating, especially in light of different German tactical and strategic decisions. Let me know if you need help in testing, writeups/briefings or OOB questions. Reply to usmc0202@mindspring.com Semper Fi!! Major Davenport (AKA Iron Cross) Wenn Alles Bruders Es Schweigen
