Got this game a week or so ago and have been messin' around with it playing different sides and while it works well mechinically, (no crashes or other goofyness) I have begun to wonder whether any one actually playtested this game for any length of time. I just watched one of my u-boats get sunk by a pair of RN battleships. Last I heard this was impossible. WTF guys. I hate to be a whiner but this is pretty silly. I know you guys know this but this is a rock/paper/scissors situation. BBs kill destroyers,DDs kill subs, and SSs kill BBs. Kind of ruins the mood to see something this obvious not noticed. Rant over!

The system is abstract. I know you will be happier if you imagine two of the eight Tribals escorting those 'wagons, with bones in their teeth, putting her down.  DDs are not modeled as an individual type, so I guess you must allow them as an abstraction.  Various players have suggested a more extensive simulation of the naval war, primarily including the interaction of shore based air and ships. I like naval combt and would like a much more detailed simulation myself, but in its much less detailed way this does work for me in the context of this game.

Well, maybe I am being a bit harsh. I've been playing War in the Pacific for years now so that tends to jade ones views towards other wargames. This game looks like it has potential as a PBEM contest, but I definately think it could use some modification. For instance, airpower seems much too brittle. As the germans in poland I tried to use it to ground attack and soften up targets but more often than not I'm the one taking a loss and thats just way too expensive. I finally parked my airgroups in germany as interceptors and there they will stay. Doubt the AI will bomb me anyway. Also, ships seem a bit expensive compared to ground troops. Twenty PP for an infantry div. vs 60 for a sub. Don't think I'm buying much of a navy.

But like I said, This stuff looks to be moddable (is that a word?) so I think that there is a bit of potential here. Very much enjoying your AAR so please keep it up. I'll be practicing aganst the AI for a month or two and looking into mods and then maybe looking at PBEM so we'll see how it goes.

Cheers, Dave.

By the way, happy new year.
As I write this people are blowing $hit up all around me. 20 minutes after midnite. Guess that last fuse was a real bitch.

You hit the nail on the head with the comment about the brittleness of air power in this game.

Check out some recent threads about modding air/ground combat losses. Sure makes for a more fun game when one can employ air strikes (even with reduced effectiveness) while not taking such huge air strength losses.
