we need to do something about the Merks level, as it is now, it pretty much only means what you got to pay them more

Morah at level 10 is the same as Morah at level 4 only you are paying here 4000 bucks a day, instead of 2000

(any skill increase they get, is because of the player, not the Merk or what they have learned)

most level gains are from getting shot, which in itself is kind of silly

(hell, I had one case of Morah putting 4 rounds into Dragons back, Dragon got a level increase and Morah got a Acc increase ????)

{Morah was happy to put 4 rounds on target, even though it was the wrong target ? and Dragon learned not to step in front of Morah, or to the side of Morah, or in back of Morah, in fact, it may be better to join the other squad, and just stay away from Morah}

but, back to the point, Levels need to mean something (more points to there Primary skills ? more HP ?, faster ? something)

to be honest, if we could, would like to see a increase in AP or decrease in the cost of doing actions

I agree, Sarge. Leveling up seems to give no bonus that I can tell. The Merc's skills increase in the field by them doing something, like making a shot, or throwing a grenade.....but it doesn't seem to be tied into their improvement in level.

That being said, IMO once you get the airport you shouldn't be having any more money troubles, at least not until if/when you change sides and spare the dictator. I was dirt poor until I captured the airport, but now I've got over 100k, and that's with spending like a drunken sailor at DJ's each day.

Btw, I had one of my mercs pull a "Chaney" and shoot one of their fellow mercs in the back. War is hell, after all!

The thing that scares me a little, is whether all my hard earned cash is gonna disappear once I stab Janus in the back. From what I understand, I'm going to lose all my sectors except for the Safari and North road. But will all the money in my bank account disappear, too?

LOL I also had one of my "snipers" shoot Venom in the back of the head for a kill. I mean the idiot was directly behind her and she was kneeling down while he was standing (I think it was Vampire that got the tk BAAAAD BOY ) .... now I know these morons will lean sideways to shoot around everything it seems except a teammate..... Needless to say I immediately went to my most recent save.


No the money will not go south on you. If you have a positive cash flow, then go ahead and camp for a while and train before you pull the plug on the gravy train, because you will need to reconquer the maps to get the income back and that could take a while as you'll be fighting the mercs you bought. Assuming you bought any.

I am more thinking about the RP side of things, then money, I don't care about money in the game (other then to supply my troops)

as PC says, you keep the money you got, plus, you going to get a LARGE nest egg from Robert to spare him and take back the land for him, and once you start to take over stuff, you start getting your money income back

( for me, I don't want to fight 30 battles with Dragon by my side and have him still be the same guy he was when I first started, he should be a old pro and that should mean something)

(for what ever reason, Lin, Smithy and Pitbull seem to be really good learners)

Whew! That's a relief to know that I won't be out of funds when I "go to to the dark side".

I totally agree with you about paucity of growth in the mercs' general abilities. You'd think that after surviving 30 battles, Dragon's "new Kung-Fu is better than his old Kung-Fu", to use his own expression.

On a related note, I lost poor old Rhino yesterday in the battle at the South Military Base. As you know, I don't reload save games if one of my mercs die, so it was a crying shame when I failed to notice that Rhino was using those fuel barrels for cover during a firefight.

yea, you got to watch what is around you, I have had some good "things" happen during the battles

shot at a guy lying on the ground and missed, but hit the tree behind him, and it blew up (?) then the tree fell and landed on top of the enemy, killing him

have fired into the roof of a building/hut, to have the roof cave in and fall on top of the bad guy

of course as you say, shoot the box the guy is hiding behind, the barrel, or shoot at the door, blow the door up and damage the guy hiding by the wall

really, I think we got a pretty good game on our hands here, and it wouldn't of taken a whole lot more, to make it a great game, and if we keep pushing, maybe we can get them to finish it off

not the best showing, but here is what some of my Merks look like after there learns and trains

Morah, 2 levels, 7 to Acc and 1 to Med

Dragon, 3 levels, 11 to Acc

Bizon, 3 levels, 1 to Dex, 9 to Acc and 1 to Med

CC, 4 levels, 5 to Leadership, 1 to Acc

Vemon, 2 levels, 2 to Acc, 3 to Mech, and 1 to Med

Smithy, 4 levels, 7 to Dex, 8 to Acc, 6 to Med

Pittbull, 4 levels, 1 to Agl, 5 to Dex, 2 to Str, 13 to Acc and 7 to Med (who says you can't teach a old dog new tricks ?)

Fisher, 3 levels, 2 to Agl, 1 to Dex, 1 to Str, 7 to Acc and 1 to Med

Jabby, 5 levels, 2 to Agl, 2 to Dex, 1 to Str, 13 to Acc and 1 to Med

Dagger, 2 levels, 1 to leadership, 4 to Acc and 1 to Mech

Moby, 4 levels, 5 to Dex, 8 to Acc and 5 to Mech

Lin, 2 levels, 3 to Agl, 5 to Acc

Hmmm, looking over the troops, I think you can see the squad set up, my middle squad does most of the training, while the first squad breaks down to repair and heal, 3rd squad is new and not much gains

Seems to be part of the morale system and there's afew other actions that call on level, Not all that sure what this all means C++ is not my thing. Anyways if someone wants to look into it, it's called on in the rpg_system.lua in the AI folder. Other then that one file I haven't come across other places that talk about what the levels do.

I personaly think it adds a passive number to your skill rolls but that's just me I don't have anything to back that but I'm fairly sure that's what it does based on what I've seen. Mercs with the same skill levels and weapons but differant merc levels handle differantly from what I've seen but I could be going slowly insane... not sure.

from what i recall from jagged alliance, the experience level pretty much just checks how often you will get an interrupt or be suprised and give an enemy an interrupt. my guess hired guns does the same.

example if you had a level 2 merc stand up on a roof and spot 3 level 6 enemies, they may get an interrupt to shoot you down. where a level 8 merc wont be suprised and you will get to shoot first.

i havent played hired guns enough yet to know for sure if it works the same way. and i really doubt the pay raise is worth it since most of the mercs ive noticed have much lower stats than ja mercs to begin with.

I too, am not a coder but I looked at the rpg lua ... I think SHadowWarrior mentioned he got some code background but just looking at the code statements I was hoping that code could be added without too much trouble.

IMO, just like every rpg game out there, if your character (or hired merc) levels up then I expect all his/her stat skills to bump up a notch or two.

If this can't be modded then maybe a cry out to Matrix to ask the developer for a change ... but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if they don't change it.

Well, that is part of what this post is for :)

but would be nice if we could get somes ideas up and agree on what we think the Merks should get, and then Matrix would have a idea of what to ask for

overall, I kind of like the idea of higher AP Cap, reduced AP cost to do actions per level (but not sure if others think along the same lines)

or a gain to the Merks primary skill areas

or say a 2 point bump to random, body skill (Agl,Dex,Str,Wis) a random bump to HP, and then a bump to primary skill (Mech,Exp,Med)

thinking that Acc should not be affected by level, it is gained from combat ?????

We dont really know what the level does.

Like it probably does effect the morale system as somebody mentioned and it may have to do with interupts as well (although interupts dont seem to be working correctly as somebody else has pointed out).

Having the level give a little bump to a primary or secondary skill if primary is maxed would be nice, but the effect might already be big and we just dont know what it is.
