Closest one I know of is Steel Panthers World at War.  Download it for free here at Matrix.  Give the Close Combat series a look also.  A step up the scale is John Tiller Campaign Series.  All are great games, but SPWAW is the only one free unless you opt for the General Edition, but try before you buy.

What about HPS Simulation Squad Battles. I have the Korea one but Have not played it yet. Heard they are about the closest thing to ASL.

Then again, take a look at Lock and Load from Matrix. Looks to be a real winner once it gets released.

I loved Soldiers at War and played it to death. It's one of my all time fave wargames. Silent Storm is very similar and pretty good too. I have never seen Squad Leader, so can only go on sabre1's comparison.

Live play of Squad Leader on the net using VSQL because there could be no competent AI programmed for such a game IMHO.

Even better, grab a $30.00 Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit and then use VASL to play it online.

Squad Leader and Soldiers At War were both made by Random Games so it was disappointing that SL was not very good compared to S@W. I still have both and installed S@W again just recently as it was one of my favourite games too. SL has a a major crash bug though that they never did fix so never got very far in that game. I even have their Chaos Gate which is similar to S@W but staged in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Paradox (of Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis fame) now have the rights, but don't hold your breath. Actually, aside from playing the game itself with others using VASL, my advice is to forget it. None of the games mentioned are really that 'similar', although of course any WW2 tactical wargame, particularly turn-based ones, is likely to have some resemblance! Play the the best of the PC games such as Combat Mission, Close Combat and Panzer Command instead (the first two actually started out as SL conversions, anyway) and judge them on their own merits.
