How big should your core force be? Does the AI generally match it in size to balance the two forces? I ask because I don't like to play with huge numbers of units, there is too much micromanagement for me. My ideal size is a battalion of infantry, some recon (platoon of ACs, company of infantry),a company of assorted armour, some support vehicles, a heavy weapons company and lots of mortars. If I play with this as my core units, and don't add a lot of support units, will I be overwhelmed or will the AI match it?

I say, go ahead and choose your force and just see what happens.  But most of the prewritten scenarios I've played on have a preselected force that is explained in the setup text and you play them to the best of your abilities.

If you are playing a generated (not designer-created) campaign, keep purchase points for the AI set at XXX in Preferences. It will then purchase based off the value of your force.

The type of engagement counts most. In a meeting engagement, you and the AI are about equal. If you are defending against an assault, then the AI is going to out-number you. The AI also will always get extra units if you use AI+200 in the preferences.

Do you mean the battle points in the general preferences? Thanks a lot guys!

Yes, the Battle Points in Preferences. If set at XXX, the computer uses your force value to purchase, modified as stated by Poopyhead above. If you set the AI's points at 1000, it will use 1000, modified as above. XXX tells it to use you core points as its base.
