When I play SP, I like to keep handy next to me my trusty Encylopedia of German Tanks of WW2.

don't leave home without it

or at least dont play SP losing hours of sleep while you drink untold amounts of old coffee without it

I thought the price looked cheap, then I noticed it was softcover.

Had this one since '78

I remember being absolutely bowled over by it.

I just got that book thru a military book club (also got the one on Brit and Ami tanks). They are a great resource - just wish I had them before:)

Yep - I have both of those books, I guess I am getting old too as I have the hard cover also! But I am due to get new ones as I have been cutting them up the last 3 or 4 years for photo's.
Time to upgrade I guess! :D :D

The one I really want is the $100 book of Shermans, I missed a chance to get it for $75 last year and am still kicking myself for not jumping at the chance! :mad:

I have 2 for you! 1) Russian Tanks and Armored Vehicles 1917-1945 by Wolfgang Fleischer. It's a Schiffer Millitary History publication. There is a second book in the series that deals with post war Soviet armor. 2) Russian Tanks 1900-1970 by Milsom, published by Galahad Books. Found this one in a local hobby shop, and it may be out of print. But don't dispare because both books are almost identical in printed content. I don't want to say anything but it looks like Fleischer just re-wrote the WWII part of Milsom's book. Price for the Wolfgang Fleischer copy--- $39.95 USF P.S. Got SHERMAN for $50 on sale from the Military Book Club. Great book! Have a nice day, hope this can help you in your quest for the truth.

Ive got the two Russian books, they're great!! And I'm on my second copy of the German encyclopedia, I use my old one for scanning pics, or anything else that's bad for bending books the wrong way, since the binding's broke anbyhow!!:(

Speaking of expensive books, I just spent $84 on After the Battle's "Blitzkrieg in the West", which covers the campaign of 1940. It covers the battle of France in great detail, something I've always wanted to learn more about. Also has about 1800 photos. Should be interesting. That's the third book I've bought from that series. Serious cash, but worth every penny!

I'll have to get my hands on some of the suggested Soviet AFV books. I must admit my only resource to this point has been the Advanced Squad Leader rulebook (not as bad as you would think).-short shrift for such an important category...

Well how about HPS Encyclopedia of Land
combat. It doesn't have penetration data and so on, but a useful short description of each item, and designed for use with Tigers on the Prowl.And it's not expensive.

Another useful database is the one that comes with East Front 2. You can only access it from within the game, but it is very well done. The one for SPWaW is not too bad either,

BTW, what Tank Destroyer (if any) did the Germans use in Russia in 1941? It seems that all the tank destroyers were eithr created after 1941 or were used only in France (like the Marder 1).

The not YET available SU-45. About 100 or so built summer 1941. Another TD was the ZIS-30 built in the autumn of 1941. This on is thankfully in the game!

But these were Soviet units were they not, correct me if I' wrong.? How about German tank destroyers? Since the Germans did not know about the T-34 when they attacked Russia, maybe they figured they didn't need any?

Sorry, lost my mind for a second or two! You see I HATE the SU-37 tank destroyer because it (and I mean IT! only one was ever built) did not see combat and takes up some of the precious little space availlable in the Russian OOB! Excuse me, the proper answer is FOUR for the Germans. 1) 47mm Pak(t) (Sf) auf Pz Kpfw IB in the game as PzJg IB
2) 37mm Pak35/36 auf Zgkw 1t, 37mm ATG mounted on the back of a Sdkfz-10 prime mover. Both the prime mover and the vehicle mounting the 37mm ATG are not in the game. This vehicle was more or less a field modification. Available summer 41.
3) 50mm Pak38 (Sf) auf Zgkw 1t, 50mm ATG mounted on Sdkfz-10 prime mover. Not in game. This vehicle was produced in small numbers and used almost exclusively by the Waffen SS. Book only said that they were created durring 1941.
4) 47mm Pak(t) auf Pz Kpfw 35R(f). As PzJg 1B production from May 1941-October 1941 conversion of French R35 tank. Not in game. Used mostly in secondary theaters like France and the Channel Islands.

Another good set of books for any wargamer is The German Order Of Battle series (3vol set) by George F. Nafziger. They are just full of all kinds of information on just about every type of German WWII land unit. Great when trying to get that OB just right!;)

There was another, two were field tested in Russia in 1941. Selbstfahrlafette 105 IVa, or "Dicker Max", which IS in the game!! Although someone screwed up the availabilty dates I had put in, it was withdrawn from frontline in 1941, NOT available till 1949!! I agree about the SU-45, it WAS in there till a certain someone decided they HAD to have the stupid ,non-existent, retarded, moronic, and, did I say really stupid SU-37 in the game!!?
