The Genzan and Mihoro Kokutais attacked with G3M's, supported by Kanoya Kokutai with G4Ms.

I suggest that this Hamaki is a member of the Kanoya Ku's 2nd or 3rd shotai which attacked Repulse, the 1st having dropped against Prince of Wales.

The picture seems to depict the Type 91 Mod 2 torpedo, as carried by the Kanoya aircraft. Interesting that the weapon being dropped appears to carry a fin extension similar to that required in the shallow waters of Pearl Harbor. Anyone know whether the torpedoes used in the Force Z attack were, in fact, so fitted?

Is this a drawing a paint over a picture like many that exist? if that so i would like know the original picture. I see for example that G4 doesn't have correctly the bomb bay doors.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize Betties were involved in the sinking.

I had a friend (he recently passed away) who would definately agree with you! One sank his 1st ship (USS Braine , a DD off Guadacanal). He wasn't entirely certain what the Kamikazes were that got his 2nd (USS Bismarck Sea). H e once told me he would never date a woman named "Betty".

Good question. I can think of no good reason for the extensions to be fitted, but one is so prominent in the picture that I wondered whether the artist was privy to information that they had been attached for this attack.

It crossed my mind that the crews might have been anxious to make sure the weapons recovered to running depth quickly because they intended to press closely before release. According to the account I have read, at least one 1st shotai pilot closed to a range of 500 yards from PoW before making his drop, in order to make quite sure of a hit. I take that with a pinch of salt, because I understand the Type 91 had to run 600 metres in order to arm correctly. However, a concern that the weapon might run beneath the target if not fitted with the extension, could, I suppose have led to them being fitted.

Then again, the extensions were such a last minute development that they scarcely had enough available for the Hawaii operation, let alone for the Indo-China based land attack units. Maybe the artist just got this wrong.

The next question would be, "How many, which of the squadrons were equipped with torps?"  As I recall, about half the bombers were carrying bombs, not torps (never see that in WitP!).  But that would help narrow your identification, if you knew which squadrons were carrying bombs.

It looks like art from the top of a model airplane box.

G4 doesn't have correctly the bomb bay doors.

Early models of the "Betty" did not have normal bomb bay doors. The early versions were removed on the ground prior to ordnance bearing missions (according to some sources the early door(s) were even removed prior to departure from the homeland!). More of a "bomb bay cover" than a "door". Later versions of Betty had regular bomb bay doors.
