Gosh. Ive never started a when will it be released thread before, but I guess there is always a time for the first. I have not been excited for a game in a long long time. Except for the impending release of WIF, there has not been much in development to get me worked up. Ive known about COGEE for quite some time but never gave it much thought because the era didnt grab me much...until now. Man I am stoked about this coming out and can only hope it will be soon...

will it? I know, I know, it will be released when it's ready. When might it be ready?

P.S....what books would one recommend to get a feel for this era? Keep in mind that I'm a complete newb to the whole conflict.

BTW...Is it ready yet?

For the naval portion, I heartily recommend the Horatio Hornblower series! Sure, its fiction, but damn if it isnt fun!

Also, when? when? when? Gimme gimme gimme!

The man asked a question. I have done pretty well in life by not angering people with the nickname of The Ox. I suggest you do the same and answer his excellent question.

Had I looked down just a few post I would have had my answer already.

Still no official word I can give you.

But next time I fire up the game for our internal PBEM testing game I'll try to take more screenshots, just to make the suffering in these parts worse.

Regarding books, I can't claim to be an expert on Napoleonic-era books -- EricBabe and Mr. Z did most of the research for this game -- but I do know that Eric has repeatedly sung the praises of the Patrick O'Brian books, on which the movie "Master and Commander" was based. The attention to historical detail makes them worth a read, even if they're fictional. Perhaps others will chime in with further suggestions.

Now, if this were the Civil War, I'd have all sorts of recommendations -- but then, you don't need me for that...

Okay, then I'll try to get the game to crash and take a screenshot of that! (That should buy us more time...)

For books, I recommend Chandler's "Campaigns of Napoleon."  It's a huge book with some nice fold-out maps, and it covers a wide range of Napoleonic topics.  It's got a little bit of an English bias.
http://www.amazon.com/Campaigns-Napoleon-David-G-Chandler/dp/0025236601

The West Point "Wars of Napoleon" is also a nice overview that covers political, social, diplomatic, and military history.  It's two parts, the book and the atlas; both are worthwhile.  (In our copy there's a misprint on the binding that reads "Wars of Napolean," so the in-house joke is to refer to this book as the "Wars of Napoleeeen"):
http://www.amazon.com/Wars-Napoleon-Point-Military-History/dp/0757001548

For information on the Royal Navy, this is far and away the best book I found.  The illustrated companion to it is so-so, but the book itself is a real gem:
http://www.amazon.com/Nelsons-Navy-Ships-Organization-1793-1815/dp/0870212583/ref=pd_sim_b_1

I'll also heartily recommend Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey and Maturin novels.  (I am one book away from finishing the 6000+ page series, and I've slowed down my reading to a few pages per day because I just don't want it to end.):
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Aubrey-Maturin-Novels/dp/039306011X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232909486&sr=1-1

MrZ did most of the new research this time around, so he might have further recommendations, particularly on the social and economic side of things. For OOBs I know he used many of the papers in the Nafziger Collection:

Thanks Eric. I'm going to try and get "Campaigns of Napoleon" if I can find a decent used copy. They a quite proud of that book at $57.80 new. Would make a nice Valentines Day present from the Missus though. Now to plant the seed.

'But next time I fire up the game for our internal PBEM testing game I'll try to take more screenshots, just to make the suffering in these parts worse.'

That is a splendid idea Gil. After many years of marriage, no one can suffer as dignified as me. BTW, are there City screens ala FoF? If so I'd love to see some of those. Really any aspects of the economic or diplomatic area would be great.

I know it's a Matrix thing, but it would be nice if we could purchase the DD before the CD version is ready to ship. Not going to happen but it would be welcomed here.

The latter. We're not looking to add anything more. We're still testing, though, since the time it takes to get the manual ready affords us additional time for testing. But other than fixes or tweaks, I expect no code changes.

The game is in pretty good shape, but it looks like there are still one or two kinks to work out. Here's one I discovered tonight. (I never knew that the British navy's secret weapon was seahorses. Makes the U.S. Navy's dolphin program look quite backwards...)

Waiting news. I'm a moderator in a spanish strategic forum. We have a lot of members who like FoF and have written some nice AARs about your game, including me

We're waiting the release of CoG:EE (we're "frikis" of Napoleonic games) and have opened a thread about the game, updating it with any news you're posting here.

http://www.puntadelanza.net/Foro/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=8256

Nice bug, btw

Thanks. I've visited that thread, though not in a while.

When COG:EE comes out you should provide links to your AAR's here. I'm sure that some players know Spanish. And for those who don't, Babelfish can be quite entertaining when it mistranslates...

Yes, no problem. I will attach some links to our AARs in the future AARs section of CoG:EE. In Puntadelanza we have a lot of experience in making AARs and have very good writters and AARers. Right now we have an AARs contest and one of the favourites is a FoF AAR.

BTW, it would be great for our page web if you could provide us some screenshots (maybe the spanish fleet fighting against Nelson in Trafalgar or something similar).

It would help to spread the word.

The manual is now 99.99% done at our end, but for Matrix to format it and get it printed takes 4-5 weeks on average. So I wouldn't predict a release before the beginning of March.

I hope that helps. I can't be more specific as to an estimated date simply because my estimates of game and patch release dates have frequently proven wrong, usually because of something unforeseeable. Here, I really think we're not going to run into any hold-ups on the way to release, but that's why they call the word "unforeseeable."

We should have a projected release date (somewhere in Gil's range, between end of February and early March) for you guys by the end of the week, with any luck.

Wow.... coming out at the exact same time as Empire Total War?

Hate to say it, but for sales purposes you may want to rethink that...

As I've mentioned in another thread, coming out around the same time might turn out to be fortuitous. When multiple games on the same or a similar theme come out around the same time it can boost sales of each, as people who might have overlooked one stray title suddenly notice a small surge in titles on that subject and become interested. Moreover, fans of the 2+ games inevitably start discussing their relative merits, drawing the attention of others. All it takes is a few people in ETW-related forums and threads elsewhere on the internet comparing and contrasting the two games, and suddenly you've got people who might never have heard of COG:EE (or had heard of it but didn't think it would be of interest) coming over here and taking a look. Likewise, some readers of this forum might not have been aware of ETW and will now investigate. So not only do I not think that ETW is a threat, but I welcome its release.

(As a side note, as I've observed before in the FOF forum, I am 100% positive that both WCS and AGEOD benefited from having FOF and AACW come out about four months apart.)

I can see the synergy that could affect two titles coming out in sequence... as one could drive sales of the other... especialy as they tire of the first title.

But coming out in direct competition with each other?  If I was you I'd attempt to put a "hurry" on your production department.... even a one or two week jump on ETW could drive some initial sales your way, as people like me make the decision as to what games we buy with limited resources.

And besides.... that way I get to play it sooner...

There is no way to speed things up -- which is good, since it means that we're already working hard to get this game out there.

By the way, here's some proof of "synergy" already:
http://www.octopusoverlords.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=66063
I found this thread earlier this afternoon, during one of my regular visits to that forum. Now, I have no doubt that COG:EE would have been discussed there eventually, but perhaps not as many people would have paid attention as might be paying attention now because of the comparison with ETW. My guess is that other such discussions will occur elsewhere on the web, especially if -- as I have reason to believe will be the case -- COG:EE is superior to ETW in certain areas.
