Guys,

Great game. After many weeks of "research" and studying various ACW games I decided that FOF was the best fit for me and I love it! I'm even having dreams about it so it must be really sinking in. I do have two quick questions if you don't mind:

1. I JUST got the game and when I load it is says 1.10.10 is the very top right corner of the main screen - does that mean it came out of the box with the most up to date patch OR is that telling me I need to go get that # patch?

2. What can I (should I) do with all those generals that flood the Union in the first several turns even though I am in the process of building units? Should I assign them to a fort, city, or just have them sit and wait until a proper command comes along?

Again, great game. It makes me dread going to work because I can't wait to get back and play some more...although my dog has not been happy the past two nights - no attention!

Great choice!

That means you have 1.10.10 installed, which is per today the latest patch. You are good to go.

Generals will make or break a game for both sides. Picking the right ones for the right command can win or lose a battle.
Look at their stats (unless you have "hidden stats" turned on), find out who will be a 4star (leader of an army), a 3star (leader of a corps), a 2star (leader of a division), and which ones will remain 1star (leader of a single brigade).
Demoting generals can quickly lose you standing with the generals governor, so be warned that demoting everyone will make the governors rather mad.
I tend to remove the really bad ones from my armies and place them in forts/cities. Atleast there they will not interfere with my armies and take up space better given to better generals.
My setup will usually be 1x4star in every army, 1x3star in every corps, 1x2star+2-3x1star in every division.

I tend to go the other way, just make sure you have a "good" commander in charge, and let the bad ones serve under him

a General is a General, and can alway be of some use in battle

(IE, you got a good 3 Star, and a lousy 2 Star, put the 3 in charge of a Corps, and then put the 2 Star in that Corps)

the trick, is messing with the high ranking ones

Twitter,
Welcome to the forum.

To clear up what's happening with the version you've got, a few months ago Matrix went through the effort (and expense!) of redoing the master copy of FOF, so that all copies sold would be fully patched. That's why you didn't need to patch up right out of the box.

Be sure to read the ReadMe.pdf document, which says which changes have been made since the manual.

Generals are important!
Even the really bad ones can make a difference in combat - it's always better to have a brigade commanded by a lousy general than no general at all (perhaps a bit too comfortable for the player, this is...).
Just be careful about the higher ranking generals - a lousy 3-star general can really mess up your plans if he's in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I spent some time and figured out how to attach generals to corps and divisions, but still cannot figure out how to attach a general to a brigade like you said it is better to have any general than no general at all. How do you attach generals to brigades? Thanks for the help!

Generals get attached to brigades during combat -- otherwise, they just share the same division/corps/army container.

So do I fill an army/corp container with enough 1 star generals (one for each brigade) and then just let them sit there? Sounds easy to do.

I appreciate the quick responses!

Yep, that's what you do.
I always put them in the division containers, then you have some control over which brigades they get attached to (one of the brigades in the said division ).
And by the way, I have a hunch that somewhere down the road, probably in a (not too??) distant expansion, we will be able to attach generals to specific brigades...
More delightful micromanagement to play with...!

if you play around a bit, you can set it up, so each battle, the same General will command the same unit, once they are lined up, don't change any units or Generals, and each battle they should join the same unit, hassle is, getting some one killed or wounded, messes up the whole thing (or adding another Unit to the Div)

Ooooo - that would be good. Would love that.... that is if it would not make .12 any more later in it's coming.

This is how rumors start...

We definitely would like to make such a change, but it will NOT be in the upcoming patch. You'll have to wait a bit longer than that.

Now THAT is the best news ever.
Give us micro managers what we want AND not hold up this highly desired next patch

Regarding the patch, testing continues to go very well. We should have some news soon. (So far, there is no reason to think that the HW AI changes have been anything but improvements. We didn't want to release the patch and then start getting reports that the AI has gone haywire.)

As I've noted before, this new patch will break save files, so those who are about to start a game (i.e., a game they care about) would be advised to hold off just a bit...

But if that does come in the future, make it an option. Some of us don't want to bother with minute details like assigning so many leaders at the brigade level as well.

If we do it we would make it an option. It's precisely for that reason that we didn't originally make generals attachable.

Really? I thought a General with tactical rating 'normal' does not improve any skills of a brigade, not to speak of cmdrs with ratings poor or terrible whom I thought of having negative effects. Does 'normal' tactical rating also improve a brigades performance in detailed combat?

Yes, normal gives a nice little bonus.
Try to hover the cursor over the generals portrait when in detailed combat and you'll see the bonuses you get from him.
Theoretically you can get a general who is 'terrible' at everything and then I don't think there will be any bonuses, but I don't think I've ever seen such a lousy general in any of the games I've played. And they never have any negative effects, no matter how terrible their ratings are.

This might be something the devs should consider changing, actually.
It would be quite interesting to play around with when you use hidden stats.
I will make a note of this in the wishlist thread...

Yes indeed, never checked this combat bonus before! So great to see these normal rated brigadiers are still poised to put up some stiff resistance! I was actually thinking they were beeing useless harrr good to be wrong in this matter

An update: it turns out that one of the bug fixes isn't fixed after all, as was just discovered, so we're going to have to make another build and test it. So, my previous advice of "hold off just a bit" is still good advice, especially if you want to start a serious game and not have to abandon it, but the definition of "a bit" has just changed, since this will push back the patch's release by several days at the least.

Better to catch the bug now instead of later.

If you add one measure of time to the other, that's when the patch will be released.
