Miller sent a supply convoy, didn't he ?  If so, maybe he loaded the damaged planes on the empty AKs and sent them back.

Regarding the varied effect of CAP, I have a question : does the size of the first attack matter for the disruption of the CAP ?  If no, then would it be gamey to organize a small-scale sweep or two, by just a handful of planes, to disrupt the CAP, before a bigger attack ?  AFAIK, the air attacks are resolved starting by the closer points of origin, so moving a CVE or two one hex closer would ensure their fighters would be the first on target...  But this might be seen as gamey rather than clever.  What's your feeling on this ?

hmm... yes there were a supply convoy but not anymore when the bombers "disappeared". I guess I´ve figured out how it happened. If you have at least 1 undamaged ac of a squadron you can fly out this squadron and if you have 20.000+ supplies and enough ac in the pool to up/downgrade the squadron you click on "up/downgrade" then the whole squadrons recombine! I´ve always seen this as more or less gamey but so far it was never an issue for me. And I didn´t do it with my fighters that get torched by the enemy bombers on and on, so... well, I´m thinking about doing that myself in future also but that doesn´t mean I like it.

The Cap thing is another story. Using one small strike first that get´s totally shot up and then send in a BIG strike that then kills the Cap at a 50:1 ratio is IMO gamey as the effect is just too much off. The same goes for the effect of the Allied only 100% super duper bounce phase when it doesn´t matter at all if you come in at 1000 or 35000 ft. I´m definetely thinking about several sweeps with medium size in future when I have to take down fighter defenses (especially as there will be the allmighty Corsair in 4 months) but I don´t want to totally exploit it with one tiny sweep and a huge one.

I can´t attack his bases anway, it doesn´t make sense in Nikmod. Like mentioned earlier, I will concentrate my attacks on the enemy shipping. Attacking his airbases is senseless...

Although it may still be costly, a sweep prior to the main attack that disrupts the enemy Cap is a valid tactic. Now using just one group as a sacrificial lamb may be rather gamey, but sending in your best fighters/best dogfighters first is a good idea, and the disruption it causes the cap for the 2nd raid is quite reasonable.

I know in the short course of my game, sending in a two sentai zero sweep over Singapore really helped out the lvl bombers escorted by oscars. If I knew I would lose large numbers of them though I might reconsider.

you´re correct and what you describe is something I see as a valid tactic also. Sending one chutai of Oscars before the main strike of 150 Oscars would be hardly something I would like to see though.

Turn 300 of the game! I´ve done post no 1 of this AAR on 10/27/2008 so we´re moving quite fast!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/24/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1020 encounters mine field at Kendari (33,71)

Allied Ships
SS Grayback, Mine hits 1

Type 93 mine hit... should a sub sink after hitting a mine?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coastal Guns at Akyab, 30,29, firing at TF 119
TF 119 troops unloading over beach at Akyab, 30,29

21 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
MSW Seki Maru

Japanese ground losses:
399 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coastal Guns at Akyab, 30,29, firing at TF 119
TF 119 troops unloading over beach at Akyab, 30,29

8 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese ground losses:
159 casualties reported

We´re unloading a nav guard unit at Akyab to make it impossible for the 15.000 defenders of Imphal to retreat towards Akyab. At Akyab we have spotted a totally understrenght Indian div and a base force...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Kendari at 33,71

Japanese Ships
AG AG-351, Shell hits 8, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Grayback

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Kendari at 33,71

Japanese Ships
DD Mikazuki
DD Shirayuki
DD Isonami
DD Shirakumo
DD Usugumo
DD Hibiki

Allied Ships
SS Grayback

so what was the mine hit? FOW? A sub that hit a mine shouldn´t even be able to dive, in WITP a sub with 99 sys can still dive... I hope that this is corrected in AE also, I know that subs can be forced to surface but I wonder if subs with a dozen 5 inch holes in their hull can still dive (and surface again )...

all DDs fail to locate the bugger...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 160
D3A Val x 15
B5N Kate x 19
G4M1 Betty x 27
Ki-27 Nate x 32
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 64

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
26 casualties reported

Airbase hits 9
Airbase supply hits 3
Runway hits 126
Port hits 1
Port supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
32 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar bombing at 2000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Sian

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14273 troops, 457 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2883

Defending force 108398 troops, 445 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3529

Allied ground losses:
207 casualties reported

Sian´s assault value seems to drop more and more now... Couple of days ago it was still over 3.600. I hope that this is mostly a result of supply shortage for the defenders coupled with my air attacks and artillery bombardments. When the bases North of Sian are cleared - hopefully in less than a month - then I can move some 3500 assault points back to the Sian front and start my attacks...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Imphal

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 24057 troops, 313 guns, 5 vehicles, Assault Value = 1309

Defending force 12558 troops, 83 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 169

we move strong forces into Imphal and encounter half a dozen base forces and an understrenght bgd. We will wait for another div and some more TK btn to move in and then we will order our first deliberate attack. Wooden hex and probably high fort levels but with all the tanks I expect to see the Allied troops surrendering quickly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kweiyang

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 16021 troops, 201 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3434

Defending force 210913 troops, 653 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 5112

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2992 troops, 21 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 73

Defending force 2260 troops, 16 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 63

Japanese ground losses:
18 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
4 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

The troops we´ve landed are just a force to block the enemy, I don´t expect this nav guard unit to take the base. But there is no threat of those two Allied units taking back India on their own! I guess they will starve to death in the next weeks/months...

Well, it is indeed a fast-paced game, an average of more than 3 game-days per real-day.  I'm not sure I could keep up an average of 1 turn/day when I'll start PBEM (not before this summer).

Re the sweeps, would you consider sending a quarter / a third of the fighters involved in an operation as "advance sweep" as not being gamey ?

Slightly OT, there's a coincidence here : I went to the theater the day you published the sinking of HMS Devonshire - I viewed the move The Duchess, which is none other than the Duchess of ... Devonshire.  Don't you feel bad for her.

Much agreed on that, the pace of this AAR is really impressive, especially compared with my opponent and I's less than 1 turn per day.

Attacking force 213513 troops, 2173 guns, 661 vehicles, Assault Value = 4741

Defending force 47318 troops, 294 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1364

Allied ground losses:
177 casualties reported

Kungchang is a clear hex, I have no idea how many forts there will be (I hope not higher than 5) and the defenders are mostly the troops that were forced to retreat out of Yenen. I also hope that the supply situation in Northern China isn´t that good, but it will probably good enough to still fully supply the fighting Allied units there. With the total superiority in troops and being fully supplied also I don´t expect this base to hold that long though. Deliberate attack tomorrow...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Sian

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14220 troops, 457 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2882

Defending force 107870 troops, 436 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3514

Allied ground losses:
141 casualties reported

enemy assault value is dropping by 10-15 points a turn now... looks good...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Imphal

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 24091 troops, 314 guns, 5 vehicles, Assault Value = 1791

Defending force 12478 troops, 86 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 169

We have ordered an attack here also. Shock attack will hopefully bring down the forts fast enough that the base will fall quickly... then the troops will assault Calcutta if I don´t have enough troops there...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kweiyang

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 16029 troops, 202 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3436

Attacking force 3004 troops, 19 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 73

Defending force 2247 troops, 16 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 62

Allied ground losses:
2 casualties reported

The strategic situation seems to be changing fast in this game all the time. As it stands now, it seems like Miller has moved out the majority of his ships from Northern Australia. That´s fine with me, I just don´t understand it... I guess the losses due to my Betty attacks and the 150 fighters lost a couple of turns ago made him rethink his plans for the moment as he stated that he should not have attacked before 43 at all. As there are no carriers and no BBs in Northern Australia (and the British cruiser force has been destroyed) I don´t fear an attack within the next weeks but of course they could all sit at Perth that has a dark port and airfield symbol. Miller landed 2000+ assault points on Lautern and he will need those troops to attack further out of Timor, this will also mean he will have to pick them up. I guess this will be the time when we will see the next major attacks on his shipping. Until then, there will probably only those huge unescorted Allied bomber strikes. And in a couple of days the first Lightnings will leave factory. But I guess the Allied would lose fewer ac if they keep up attacking UNESCORTED.

The Pacific atolls are well defended and without more carriers Miller can´t do anything there and I seriously doubt he will try anything. Southern New Guinea and the Solomons aren´t really defended but also here it will be hard to achieve something without more carriers. He can surely take a base or two but the losses in shipping will be immense. My focus will stay on the area North of Timor though, most troops will go there and I will build up airfields and forts as many and as fast as we can. The Pacific atolls will stay defended as they are and if I have some spare units then they will bolster the defenses South and in the area of Rabaul.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/26/42

Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Allied aircraft

B-25C Mitchell: 1 destroyed, 11 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
440 casualties reported
Guns lost 9

Airbase hits 8
Airbase supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 15000 feet
12 x Wellington III bombing at 15000 feet
4 x Blenheim IV bombing at 15000 feet

we´re unlucky that the whole RAF bomber force made it from India to Northern Australia but we are lucky that this means Miller still using Blenheims as those bombers at least can get shot down... most of the rest is immune to everything. At least I don´t lose much when shooting with flak only and not having fighters at the base...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese forces CAPTURE Imphal base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
1228 casualties reported
Guns lost 29
Vehicles lost 18

Allied ground losses:
15200 casualties reported
Guns lost 34

last base East of Calcutta fell to the Japanese forces. 15.200 troops surrendered, we scored 324 points for ground losses today and Allied ground losses are at 13.739 now! Calcutta, Delhi and Karachi left. Calcutta will be assaulted, Delhi starved and Karachi only blocked for the next 12 months.

After Calcutta will surrender I guess this will be the last "major" Western Allied troop concentration in the war that will surrender. But there are still hundreds of thousands Chinese troops trapped and ... the Russians...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kungchang

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 233701 troops, 2174 guns, 661 vehicles, Assault Value = 4754

Allied ground losses:
1631 casualties reported

the assault on Kungchang was bloodier than expected. Same goes for the forts, I didn´t expect level 7 forts. Hopefully I will get better adjusted av soon and hopefully my units don´t get shredded all the time like today...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Sian

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14304 troops, 459 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2884

I´ve first moved out my art units from Myitkina to bring them to Karachi to aid to the assault on this Allied stronghold. After seeing the Allied av being adjusted from 600 to 12.000 there I changed my plans of not attacking anymore and ordered the art units back to Myitkina... The Allied bases North of Myitkina are all Japanese now and I doubt that Yunan will be able to supply all those troops over 180 miles of trails. I guess Yunan itself doesn´t even have enough supplies to fully supply the 10 units there but who knows...

We will have a look on the Allied av in the next turns and then we will notice it soon when the Allied will start starving... even if there are still over 1000 Allied assault points at this base, there is no real threat. Too low supply and I´ve got enough troops in Burma to keep the Allied honest.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

two USMC divisions, a TK btn and 7 art units have moved out of Lautern and are on the trail towards Dili now. Seriously looks like that Miller plans to take Timor without any more amphibious assaults. Miller told me that as long as I have every carrier, every warship and every Betty near Timor it would be suicide for him to send in ships. And he hopes that his LBA can prevent me from doing a counterlanding. Well, I hope Miller will be surprised by my forces when he decides to attack somewhere else as I don´t have EVERYTHING near Timor anymore. There were days when I had 98% of everything near Timor though!

with the bases in Northern Australia nearly stripped of ships and Perth being stacked with ships I guess the next upcoming invasion will come directly out of Perth again. I think that also the original invasion of Lautern came directly from Perth.

those attacks are coming from Derby, the bombers attack with reduced bomb load due to flying on extended range. They still achieve enough hits from 15.000 ft to steadily increase the damage to my facilities at Koepang and even though I have over 400 eng there, without eng vehicles the repairs are just too slow...

as expected, the forts were level 9 and the enemy´s adjusted av was high. But with only 209 assault value they at least don´t do that much damage to our troops.

our nav guard unit can´t achieve anything. Even though it had 4000 supplies (200 needed), the adjusted av looks like a joke. I will lift it out again and the understrenght Indian div and RAF base force will starve to death...

several weeks ago the Chinese launched two deliberate attacks here and their av dropped from 6.500+ to 4.000 but they seem to recover nicely. Wooden hex and forts 9 will make it a bloody affair when I will have to finally attack here. But I´m sure when this base will fall this will be the absolute end for the Chinese. Well, they are defeated anyway already...

AK Atlantic
AK Nora Moller
AK Empire Gareth
AK Bridge
AK Empire Resistance

North West coast of Australia, big Allied convoy going towards the Northern Australian bases. Rear salvo of two torps missed the big AK. I guess this is a supply convoy for Northern Australia. Supply is a major issue there, at least this is my experience when playing as the Allied. You have to bring in hundreds of thousands supplies, not just a couple of ten thousand. I´ve thought about positioning a carrier TF in this area to catch a convoy but on the other hand I don´t know if it´s worth it. Worst case could be two US CVs meeting a couple of IJN CVEs...

the super low attack of the Allied fighters results in TWO fighter lost. Malir is defended by two special base forces and two AA rgts... I´ve thought this would keep Miller from attacking but how should it. Attacking a "strongly" defended base doesn´t result in more losses for him than I lose attacking a totally undefended target at the same range.

the reason for my air attack on Lanchow was to disrupt the single unit there. As there are fighters also, I was sure that this single unit is only a base force and I was right. We had a Mongolian cav div moving into Lanchow over the roads coming from the East. We shock attack over the river and the low assault value base force doesn´t do any damage to our attacking unit. I don´t understand why Miller didn´t move an inf unit into Lanchow. When Lanchow falls (oil / resources / HI) then I can move on Sining (last Chinese base in the far North) and Kungchang will be totally cut off then, the troops there not having a chance to retreat. Means in a couple of weeks the 50.000 defenders of Kungchang will have to surrender!

we have some more flak on the way to Malir to cause more damage to the attackers. I don´t want to overstac the base with flak and I don´t want to do too much harm to the attacker as this then surely makes him stopping those training runs. Would be cool if he loses 5-6 ac per attack though...

Miller increased the attack alt and his 250 bombers don´t achieve much anymore. Such an attack every second or third day is far too few to keep Koepang´s airfield damaged. When we will have enough Tojos available I´m thinking about moving them in again. The plan is to use 6 air search radar equipped Yugumo class DDs being moved in the same day as the fighters to hopefully see the Cap scrambling.

Miller is aware of the fact that I´m using a high number of barges to supply and reinforce my positions on Timor and therefor he moved some fighter bombers to Lautern. Those 4 cal .50 hits did no damage at all...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/03/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 13,85

Japanese Ships
SS I-153

Allied Ships
AK Ernest Meyer
AK Canadian
AK Empire Peri
MSW Penguin
MSW Turkey
DMS Elliot, heavy damage
DD Aylwin, heavy damage
DMS Zane, heavy damage
MSW Bundaberg

6 torps missed... Miller is moving out his damaged ships and there is nearly nothing left in Northern Australian ports. Perth is still full of enemy shipping though. Guess Miller only wants to make me think I´m safe and of course he doesn´t have to fear an air attack on Perth´s harbour...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 12,86

Japanese Ships
SS I-159

Allied Ships
TK Augustina, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AK Empire Peri
MSW Penguin
MSW Turkey
DMS Elliot, heavy damage
DD Aylwin, heavy damage
DMS Zane, heavy damage
MSW Bundaberg

I-159 does better during the day and attacks the same convoy that was attacked during the night by I-153. A rear salvo of two torps and one hits the small TK Augustina. 800 miles to Perth and 700 to Broome, this could be a kill...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Airbase hits 31
Airbase supply hits 13
Runway hits 81

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 12000 feet

Koepang´s airfield was 100% operational again so Miller sent in his bomber armada lower than before and today he has to pay for it as suddenly our flak defense showed teeth! 22 of the attacking bombers were lost to flak today! Guess this was one of the best results so far... The airbase was hit hard though and Koepang is inoperational again. Also the supply hits are getting more and more concerning. The last couple of weeks cost us over 20.000 supplies.

Aircraft Attacking:

There are 200 enemy fighters at Lautern now, flying Cap and the fighter bomber are attacking our barges. Without much effect though, those MG hits do NO sys damage at all on my barges. That´s more than strange as enemy PTs normally shoot IJN DDs to pieces with their cal. 50...

So many Kittyhawks and Spitfires on Cap over Lautern could mean another incoming convoy, probably bringin supplies. We will see if we are nearing another major airbattle over Lautern.

The barges are moving in supplies and moving out the shredded units that were forced to retreat from Lautern. We were able to save all units from Lautern and they will be shipped back to Singapore or Japan to be rebuilt.

our assault with the Mongolian cav division was a success. Unfortunately the capture of the HI/rescources/oil wasn´t much of a success as all those facilities are 60-70% damaged. Due to the situation near the SRA with the Allied being on the jump into vital areas I have decided to repair all damaged oil rigs at Lanchow. This will cost us some 70.000 supplies. But Lanchow will then produce around 7% of the total oil need of the Empire so I guess it will be worth it. With the conquest of India we will produce enough supplies in the next month that this won´t really hurt us. Moving the supplies to Lanchow will probably be the biggest problem.

A bgd is needed to meet the garrisson requirements at Lanchow so we have ordered a shot up bgd to move there from Kungchang, should arrive within the next two turn. At the moment we are 60 av below the requirements so I can only hope that the oilsites won´t be damaged even more. Also a pretty much shredded div will move out of Kungchang to move on Sinin with the Mongolian cav division to take out this base, probably only defended by another Allied base force. This will reduce our av at Kungchang by around 400 points.

A very succesful day for our submarine force...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/04/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 15,85

Japanese Ships
SS I-21

Allied Ships
AK Mauna Ala, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

I-21 starts with an attack on one of the three spotted convoys West of Broome. A big AK is hit...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 11,86

Japanese Ships
SS I-164

Allied Ships
TK Augustina, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

I-164 finished Augustina that was already hit yesterday. The TK went down with it´s captain...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 14,85

Japanese Ships
SS I-153

Allied Ships
AK Sea Thrush, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Then I-153 succesfully attacks and probably sinks another big AK...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 9,87

Japanese Ships
SS I-164

Allied Ships
AP Talthibius, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

And I-164 attacks and probably sinks the big AP Talthibius! All those attacks happened in the shipping lane between Broome and Perth. I would prefer to attack fully loaden ships that come from Perth going to Northern Australia but I shouldn´t rant about that I guess... Also IJN subs can be a real pain in the a$$ for Allied shipping when there aren´t enough escorts around. My submarine force is doing a great job in this campaign both against Allied warships and the merchants. Especially this big AP lost will hurt Miller. Dozens of APs were lost due to the Lautern invasion and those APs will be missed for moving troops from the West coast to the front. APs are "rare" during the first 18 months of the war so this is definetely something Miller will feel.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lanchow , at 45,25

Day Air attack on Dili , at 31,77

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses
F-5A Lightning: 1 damaged

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Diamond Harbor at 28,23

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IV x 8
IL-4c x 24

Allied aircraft losses
IL-4c: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
AP Manila Maru
AP Nissho Maru
AP Meiten Maru
AP Kurohime Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire
AP Matsukawa Maru, Bomb hits 1
AP Nichiren Maru
AP Mexico Maru, Bomb hits 1
AP Reiyo Maru

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x IL-4c bombing at 6000 feet
3 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet

I´ve tried to sneak in two dozen medium APs to Diamond Harbour to pick up a division but unfortunately my ships were spotted yesterday and I was sure this would happen this turn. We´re lucky that there aren´t more Allied bombers attacking as I expected at least 150 Hurricanes to attack my convoy. It was a gamble, I didn´t want to place 250 fighters at Diamond Harbour as they are need at the front and while I was able to sneak two big convoys in and out already, the third try was a failure. I´ve moved 54 Zeroes to the base and tomorrow 72 Oscars will follow. The ships are disbanded in port, none is in danger of sinking. Looks like I have to take out Calcutta first before I can safely move ships to DH. All bomb hits achieved by the Chinese long range bombers. With decent exp those bombers are ship killers, dropping 10x250 kg AP bombs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 14,85

Japanese Ships
SS I-153

Allied Ships
AK Mauna Ala, on fire, heavy damage

The only unsuccesful sub attack today, Mauna Ala took a torp already... my Wolfpacks will continue to hunt those convoys down, I expect more hits on Allied shipping...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Sian

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14208 troops, 455 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2881

Defending force 103723 troops, 374 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3395

Allied ground losses:
124 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Calcutta

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 70850 troops, 435 guns, 468 vehicles, Assault Value = 1295

Defending force 14166 troops, 160 guns, 92 vehicles, Assault Value = 177

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 6

Japanese max assault: 1250 - adjusted assault: 823

Allied max defense: 165 - adjusted defense: 945

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 6)

Japanese ground losses:
1628 casualties reported
Guns lost 25
Vehicles lost 9

Allied ground losses:
1556 casualties reported
Guns lost 48
Vehicles lost 13

I wanted to scare Miller to make him move out his bombers and even though I moved out two of my divs I´ve ordered an attack. It wasn´t a succes but even though we get a 0:1 we cause some nice damage to the defender. Will take some 10-14 days until I have decent numbers of tanks at this base. I expect Calcutta to surrender within the next three weeks. Then the next Allied base is Delhi and I´m even thinking about attacking it with my tanks as I don´t have a real task for them after Calcutta has fallen. But I guess starving will be the better option as there are also 600 assault points, they could also get adjusted to 12.000...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Myitkyina

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 8429 troops, 289 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1532

Defending force 53018 troops, 358 guns, 262 vehicles, Assault Value = 1128

Allied ground losses:
408 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Myitkina´s assault value is dropping real fast now, 25 points in one day. Two Allied units are spotted two hexes South East of the base. I don´t know if Miller is moving more troops into Myitkina, would be suicide IMO. Not a perfect solution but a better idea would be to withdraw the Allied troops from Myitkina to China. Even though if China surely hasn´t ample supplies, the Allied troops wouldn´t starve there at least.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kweiyang

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 15978 troops, 200 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3441

Defending force 218431 troops, 811 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 5476

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kungchang

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 34094 troops, 142 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1227

Defending force 228725 troops, 1887 guns, 656 vehicles, Assault Value = 4194

Remember my attacks on Wyndham and Darwin with 300+ bombers twice? I´ve used very high exp bombers and what did I hit attacking a target without any Cap that attacked my bombers? And now look at the hit rate of those at best medium exp bombers... 21 hits... Did I even achieve 21 hits with 300+ high exp bombers at Wyndham when all those bombers weren´t able to sink even one of the British carriers there?

I knew Miller would move in more bombers and I knew my two Zero daitais wouldn´t achieve much but again they achieve nothing against the bombers, not even against the Chinese and obsolete British ones. Like everytime, Miller would have been better off attacking without escort. Moved in 84 Oscars and 36 more can fly in tomorrow. Miller moved ac to Myitkina today so I´m sure those will show up over DH tomorrow also. I guess we will have a dozen APs heavily damaged in the end and Miller will have lost 50-100 ac if he continues to attack. I doubt that we will see more attacks than the one tomorrow as he will then run into 100+ fighters on Cap. I´m pretty sure that we won´t lose a single AP as DH is a level 9 port so other than damaging those ships, the Allied won´t achieve anything I guess. I don´t have to do anymore big style invasions which means I have plenty of APs to ferry troops around and those APs will be repaired within 6 months.

But still, it was dumb to move in those ships when I knew Miller could fly in hundreds of ac to Calcutta within a turn. This same ignorant way was the reason I´ve lost BB Hyuga near Karachi... I should be more carefully again...

look at all those fighters that are doing training raids from Lautern against Dili now... they were parked in rows during the night when our two cruiser squadrons didn´t care to attack the airfield as it was ordered... knocking out two monthly replacement rates of Warhawks would have been cool...

we have spotted this TF moving along Australia´s North coast a couple of days ago and we therefor moved in our IJN long range bombers but they refused to fly until today when the TF already was 2 hexes off Darwin. To make it even worse, major parts of the attack failed to locate the convoy so we have to be totally hapy with the damage done for one Nell lost. I guess two of the ships could sink and hopefully 20-30% of the supply is lost. At least I think this is a supply TF going to Darwin. The TF is reported as 10-12 ships, mostly small AKs.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/07/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 9,87

Japanese Ships
SS I-21

Allied Ships
AP Hunter Liggett, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Hunter Liggett is finished and thinks with the captain. Miller stated that my subs hit every turn and he makes it easy for me as he doesn´t route his TFs away from the coast. With this statement I´m sure the enemy TFs are now LEAVING the shipping lanes and it will become far more difficult to even find the enemy TFs. Took him two CLAAs and over a dozen merchants to recognize this...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 19 troops unloading over beach at Port Moresby, 53,91

Japanese ground losses:
229 casualties reported

After 8 months of bombing and starving the PM defenders I have now decided that it´s time to take this base. PM now become more important as Miller´s offensive out of Northern Australia needs troops, supply and fuel and as long as I own the South East tip of New Guinea the shipping lanes on the East coast going to Darwin are closed and it takes 3 weeks longer to route all the ships around Australia so South East NG has become quite important. More important than usual. There are already enough ac to make an offensive bloody for the Allied and more troops are moving into the area. Bases and escpecially forts are built up...

I´ve ordered the 200 fighters on Maumere to LRCAP Dili to catch the 150 Allied fighters doing unescorted training bombing runs... well, why am I not surprised not to get lucky. Only 18 fighter bombers showed up trying to attack some barges...

Would really have been nice to see my 40 fighters getting a shot at 150 fighters doing a bombing run...

This is North of Sian, two corps and the hopei militia division are defending this area and are probably totally out of supply. Unfortunately it will get quite hard to get them to surrender out of a base... probably not without wrecking my troops too...

there was nearly nothing left to defend Port Moresby. The attacking nav guard unit has no problems at all to take the base. Interesting sidenote is the fact that the Allied troops (that were over 15.000 eight months ago) weren´t able to build a single fort level due to my bombings...

TF 86 encounters mine field at Lautem (33,78)

Japanese Ships
DD Shirayuki, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Sending in two big cruiser bombardment TFs and a smaller CL/DD surface combat TF... well, everything happens as usual (should I say the usual sh*t?). Shirayuki hits a VH2 mine... damage? enough to sink the ship tomorrow...

PT PT-120, Shell hits 4, and is sunk

Miller divided his 6 PT TF into 2x3 PT TFs and this is a good decision I guess as this way he gets more die rolls and chances to surprise us... in this case the PTs were surprised...

I´m getting sick of it... again, no result... reconning the base for weeks with DinahIIs and 300 enemy ac at the base (max for level 6 af) and we destroy the laughable 2 ac on the ground... ALL Allied bombardments in this game were 100% nukes... no, they were dropping H-bombs...

and this bombardment is even the bigger joke, we don´t hit the base at all... I can only repeat myself and am getting angry about myself, why the hell am I even attacking Allied bases. No chance anymore at this stage of the game... all you get are losses, for no gains at all... well, two DDs lost for the whopping number of 6 PTs and 2 ac destroyed today...

the results of the bombardements are realy a joke. with 300 AC on the field, you can expect a junkyard after the visit. maybe going in with the hiei and kirishima would bring better results? they are fast enough and since you have no enemy SF-TF to fear, you can maybe risk them....although with your luck, they would recive a TP shell which sinks them.

using my BBs for bombardments is out of question for the moment, it´s just not worth it risking a mine hit or a PT torp that slows the ship down to see it taking 5 torps from Albacores during the day. It´s risky enough to use CAs.

moved two Chutais of Tojos to Dili and set them on 90% Cap which results in exactly 50% of the 24 fighters in the air... they don´t take down a single P-39 even though they damage 9 of them. See, even the Tojo has such a low gun value that it can´t even harm fighter bombers that don´t shoot back. The P-39 attacked the airfield and two of them were shot down by flak...

Allied aircraft
I-153c x 24

No Allied losses

Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 4

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x I-153c bombing at 2000 feet

those fighters are coming from Lanchow and the attacks will soon stop as my troops have marched 50% of the distance to this base already... I´m not sure it makes any sense to train Chinese pilots anyway...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B5N Kate x 21

Hurricane IIc: 3 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
135 casualties reported
Guns lost 7

Aircraft Attacking:
13 x Hurricane IIb bombing at 2000 feet

the damaged ac mean nothing as they are A) allied and b) attacking at range 0 so none of them are lost no matter how many we damage...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Dili , at 31,77

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 18

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 4 destroyed, 10 damaged

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x P-39D Airacobra bombing at 2000 feet

amazingly effective flak here when I think about the low number of flak guns...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 7,92

Japanese Ships
SS I-1

Allied Ships
MSW Burnie
MSW Goulburn
MSW Maryborough
MSW Bundaberg
MSW Poole

don´t know if this is an ASW TF or some MSW that are moved from Perth to the North Coast. Guess MSW TF to clear my sub laid mines... normally it takes some time until Miller reacts to my actions but finally he does usually...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Calcutta

Japanese Deliberate attack

Japanese ground losses:
299 casualties reported
Guns lost 7
Vehicles lost 10

Allied ground losses:
11723 casualties reported
Guns lost 80
Vehicles lost 30

we capture Calcutta and the British troops there surrender, only around 12.000 were left. We scored 329 points for Allied ground losses today, now at 14218! Very important also: the 600 resources and the 181 HI were undamaged! I expect to hold India into mid to late 43 at least and this means I should produce A LOT resources there that can be shipped to Japan and being stockpiled there to help us when the resources from the SRA getting less...

Ground combat at Sian

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14260 troops, 459 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2878

CA Exeter was spotted North of Wyndham today, moving West. The heavy cruiser is heavily damaged from my attack on Darwin and the naval engagement off Lautern before. We have moved in 100+ IJN bombers to attack the TF (another AP/AK TF was spotted also in the same hex) and hope for the best. 5 subs in the area are also alerted. We have also moved nearly 300!!! fighters to Koepang and four radar equipped Yugumo class destroyers. I hope that the four radar equipped destroyers will help to get a decent Cap number and that my airfield symbol will attract hundreds of Allied bombers as usual. Miller has 200+ figters at Lautern, perhaps he tries a sweep before his bombers would go in. In this case I also hope to get a good number of fighters in the air and get a loooong bounce phase due to the radar (just like the Allied get it ALL the time). When we get more than 225 fighters into the air and Miller attacks with all he has then I expect to take down 150+ enemy aircraft tomorrow. Of course it could also be the other way around with the usual 120-150 fighters on Cap and in the end 150 destroyed on the ground. This is the first "mass deploy" of the new IJA fighter, the Tojo. There are also some Zeroes but not a single Oscar as they can´t take down enemy bombers anyway... should be an interesting day tomorrow...

radar equiped TFs in a base do increase the CAP effectivity of the base fighter defence? now that would be a good news. and good luck for your "fighter trap".

beside that, when do japanese base forces recive air radar equipment? i know that the IJn was behind the allied and the germans in radar technology, but they got their first big static radar devices before they yould be installed on warships.
